I was strongly dismissive of this plot when I heard about it several years ago. Recently I found myself with no comics to read so I paid a few bucks for this on kindle. I was very pleasantly surprised.The art is fine. The dialogue is decent at times, but it hits high notes when Otto is ranting and bragging. The presence of Peter in the back of Otto's mind adds a dynamic to it, but he mostly feels like a wet blanket (that said, we need to have Peter's presence as a moral anchor and also a hope that the status quo will be eventually restored). In this first volume, Otto provides strong evidence that he is, in fact, the superior Spiderman.The bit where he finds out that Peter Parker does not have his PhD is fantastic. Kudos, Mr. Slott.

Best marvel comic I've read in a while. Interesting and compelling story. Dr. Octopus taking over spiderman's body (not a spoiler, this is the premise of the entire series) is more than just an interesting twist. It provides a way to critique almost everything defining about spiderman from an ultra realist perspective. The character development is also incredible, adding depth to Otto Octavious, a previously fairly one dimensional character. This is a must read for spiderman fans.

This run is so unique that is is hard to compare it with other Spider-Man titles. If you have ever wanted to see Spider-man really go nuts on the villains then this one is for you. Sure Doctor Octopus is the one doing it, but Peter is along for the ride and not to happy with him. So you won't miss out on good old Peter Parker either. This book surprised me to no end and I enjoyed it much more then I had originally thought I would. Excellent art combined with a high quality story.

Its good, I just wish I knew what I got into before picking this one up. I'm not a huge fan of the premise.SPOILERS: Not really, its in the first page, but just incase.In the first page we see that Otto Octavius is dead but it was actually Peter Parker who died because in on the last issues of the original The Amazing Spiderman series they switched bodies from a device Octavius made and so Octavius was in Peter Parker's body and Parker was in Octavius and he ends up dying in that body.So Octavius is Spiderman and I like it because he is Spiderman but he does things his own way which is actually more efficient then Parkers methods of doing things. He aims to be the 'Superior' Spiderman.But like I said I'm not a huge fan of this premise but its interesting.

When I first heard the premise behind Superior Spider-Man, I completely dismissed it and tuned it out. Boy, was I wrong. I became interested when Superior Spider-Man appeared in Spiderverse. He intrigued me then and this book really does him justice. It's an interesting twist with great writing and art!

Now THIS is what I'm talking about! This is a great read! This story has me on the edge of my seat the whole time and with each page turn O wonder what the Superior Spider-Man will do next! I absolutely recommend this book!

As a kid I alwayed loved the hero spider-man. Whether it was watching the animated series or the original spiderman films, something was always relatable. Considering my love for the hero spider-man I figured I might as well start reading some of the comics. After some research I picked the superior spiderman series and I gotta say, I'm glad I did. In my opinion, The artwork is stunning. The story is intriguing. The pace of story is perfect. I am a couple volumes into this series and I just absolutely love it!

The idea is ridiculous but the writer saves the day and does a brilliant story. The young Peter Parker is no more and his replacement is an old serious man, this creates very funny situations as the time he scandalizes for not having a doctorate xD I will love to get the whole series that gave to an appreciated and known character a fresh re-take without destroying him. : )

Another thought-provoking work from Bruce Feiler. I wouldn't have believed you could tease that much introspection out of the Adam and Eve story but he found a way to do it and relate it to the way we live today. Much to chew on here in examining and reexamining the most important relationships of our lives.

As someone who believes that Adam & Eve’s story is both real and significant, I enjoyed this book very much. I enjoyed the content, references and organization of the book and thought it was well presented. It caused me to ponder on my beliefs and to consider how I personally can learn & grow by examining the relationship that Adam & Eve had in their lifetime. I affirm that anyone with an open mind can enjoy this book and will wind up with renewed perspective.

Very well written and not theologically boring. Presented the story in a way that is not normally heard. He told how the story has been interpreted over the years by popular authors. Many stories have been written based on Adam & Eve's that we don't normally think of as being so.

A magical, thoughtful treatment of the First Couple. I recommend it unreservedly for anyone seeking illumination on stories from the scripture as they apply today.

We truly enjoyed how Bruce tied the first couple's llove story into today. We enjoy all of Bruce Feiller's books and can't wait for the next one to come out!

This is a great reading with a huge amount of information and an equal amount of conjecture. It has a wonderful thoughtful approach to the topic of relationships and love.

Just FYI to all you unsuspecting buyers out there... this book is written from a "young-earth creationist" point of view and attempts to discount evolutionary science. It gives the "worldview" that the earth is 6,000 years young and the universe 7000 years in existence pp 35-36. Many faulty arguments in this book IMHO. However, it is interesting as an apologetic for that "worldview." I have not yet finished reading it, but buyers be aware. I guess fundamentalist Christians have the ear of many publishers... it sells, I guess, but the particular theology is not apparent in the title.

Currently using this for a Bible study group with 18-25 yr olds. Pretty good for the most part. There are a few comments/facts regarding fossils in the book that I have had trouble verifying. This is the only topic off the top of my head I haven't been able to find outside references that aren't circular. That said, I didn't really put as much effort into it because I personally feel that most books regarding ancient history are self serving.The reading itself spurs a decent amount of discussion in our small group.Edit: As you near the end of the this book it picks up steam. I am finding that both myself and the students are becoming more interested as we go. Later in the book the chapters lead in to each other very well which helps the flow of conversation in our group.

What an amazing book!!! Highly recommend it for people who have faith and want to know more, people who are questioning their faith and seeking answers, people who want to understand and people who need ways to share their faith.

In fact some missionaries who have served many years overseas are culturally clueless too. In about 20 years or maybe less, white Christian churches will no longer be the dominant Christian culture in the USA. The author does a great job at describing the most important keys to developing cultural intelligence in churches, which unfortunately are way behind other segments of society.

Important subject and good pastoral perspective. i don't know whether the church can get past our cultural blinders to fulfill Paul's dream expressed in Galatians, but this book makes an attempt to address the challenge of the multi-culture church. It is definitely for a North American audience, and one could wish for a more universal approach to a true cross-cultural perspective to the community of the redeemed, but the second culture experience of the author certainly helps. Worth the read and serious discussion for church leaders in every Christian community.

This is an educational book for any business, church or school that's become multi-ethnic or wants to move in that direction. Valuable counsel for deepening relationships across cultures. Also, if you are moving into another culture, please read this book.

Dr. Rah, though he touches on many important topics, does himself no favors with the arguments he uses. I would even go so far as to say I agree with many of his conclusions, but it is disconcerting to me how poor his arguments were. One such argument loosely connected Noah's ark with traditional church architecture and thus "proved" racism. His conclusions are usually good and admirable though his arguments do him no favors. Another argument involved false information and therefore discredited his opinion: He lists James, brother of Jesus, as a Judaizer and the leader of Judaizers, though the Bible never refers to him as a Judaizer, but a Jew (HUGE contextual differences). This distinction is one that would undermine one of his arguments. These two examples in addition to many frustrating typos and grammatical errors left me frustrated with this book (it was used as a textbook for one of my college classes).To reiterate, I mostly agree with his conclusions; I have nearly no respect for his arguments.

Soong-Chan Rah writes in a language that is understandable and he shares his own personal experiences with sincerity. This is a keeper.

Nicely done wonderful work of Dr. Rah. We are living in global era. Our cultural intelligence decides our value and future.

Very well written and easy to read and comprehend authorstheories and instructions. I like the questions at the end of thechapters.

Having just read the Divine Comedy and the Odyssey, I really enjoyed this book. The informal language made me uncomfortable at first but once I learned the background of the book, it ceased to bother me and I could enter into the fun of the narrative. Highly recommended.

The Eighth Arrow by J. Augustine Wetta could be considered both a sequel to Dante’s Divine Comedy and a sequel to Homer’s Odyssey. In the Divine Comedy, Odysseus was trapped in hell, and in The Eighth Arrow Odysseus prays to Athena for assistance and she appears and gives him armor and a quiver of 7 arrows to help him escape from Hell. Odysseus and Diomedes then proceed from the entrance of hell and fight their way through the various circles of hell until they engage in a final battle with Hades.The author has done his homework and crafted an excellent tale which is a worthy successor to The Odyssey and The Divine Comedy. The plot is clever, the characterizations are true, and the tale is engaging. Odysseus is a great fighter, but here he learns that the hardest acts of all are not feats of physical courage, but moral acts, like granting mercy to an enemy, admitting that he was wrong in his lying, and doing what’s right no matter what the cost.The author gives a good character portray of Odysseus, who has spent 2,000 years in hell and now has regrets about things he has done, like deceiving Iphigenia and leading to her to her sacrificial death to the Greek gods so that the Achaean fleet can sail to the Trojan War. Another strong character is Odysseus’s wife Penelope, who tells Odysseus to “Come back with your shield or come back on it” as he proceeds on his march through hell. And she is a truly strong woman, who can string Odysseus’s famous bow and joins him in the fight against Hades.This novel is similar to Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings in that it is an epic tale with heroic characters who fight monstrous evils while Christian themes are in the background. What makes this tale so captivating is Odysseus’s realization that his wife Penelope is a better person than he is because of her sterling character, and his efforts to repent and become worthy of her and to make her proud. He does.

I haven’t read anything by Homer, but I have read Dante’s Inferno (though it’s been a while). And I think that counts for something...Though, honestly, this book is just as entertaining if you didn’t take Classics 222 in college (or you slept through it).And what’s not to love about this author?"J. Augustine Wetta, O.S.B., is a monk of Saint Louis Abbey. He serves as the director of Chaplaincy at the Saint Louis Priory School, where he teaches English and Theology, and coaches rugby. … During his spare time, Father Augustine supervises the juggling team, cultivates carnivorous plants, raises carpenter ants, and surfs."Clearly, the man has an active imagination and should be writing novels, don’t you agree?This novel is a keeper and a five-star read. As I read it (thoroughly entertained the whole time), I knew I must be missing something (many somethings, if I’m honest). It wasn’t until I had finished that I found the glossary. *facepalm*He writes, prefacing the glossary, “I started writing this book, with the help of my students, as a way of introducing them to the worlds of Dante and Homer.”(So you see, you don’t have to have read those works!)I’m not sure if Fr. Augustine intended it, but he made me wonder how I could go about reading and understanding these Homeric works for myself. (I suspect, though, that it’s better done with some guidance.)The story: Odysseus and his sidekick Diomedes are granted a reprieve from the eighth circle of Hell. They start back at the top and work their way down. The deal is, if they can get past the Devil himself, they can have a chance at a “redo” on earth.Odysseus is all of us. He’s cocksure and full of himself, completely blind to his weaknesses and failings. The trip through Hell, as it turns out, is an opportunity for self-awareness to bloom in him, even as he ignores the loyalty and insight of his longtime friend.Each circle of Hell poses its own challenges and hilarity — because this book is full of laughs and chuckles. I think I probably got about half the jokes…and I’m sure on a good reread that there will be even more to appreciate.Highly recommended.

They are the masters of performance for sure!The first time that I read this book, I got it at the library. Life is a stage, and If you are REALLY serious about performing on life's stage whether in the board room, an open mic night, or Madison Square Garden, this book is a must read...correction you MUST read this book and adopt and implement these principals in your daily life. This book breaks everything down for you and encourages you to develop the principles to suit your situation while developing your own unique style. I have read my copy so may times the pages are becoming worn yet the information remains fresh. As I develop and my stage presence grows, I continually find new ways to utilize this information. My duo plays medium sized venues (about 250 people on average) in a restaurant/ bar setting. We knew our music was solid but crowd response was not what we wished. It seemed we were background music even though we were on the "big stage". By incorporating some of the methods in the book and changing some of the general ways of thinking about our show there was an IMMEDIATE impact on our crowd interaction. People have become more involved and we are having more fun. This book is a must-read for any level of live performer.

This translation is fine for one read-through--if you want to get the gist--but going deeper into Plato's thought is difficult. A more literal translation, while less beautiful and smooth, would be much more stimulating.Also, I never crease my spines. I actually take great pains to avoid it. But this one just went and creased with little effort. All my friends who have this edition experienced the same thing, though some of them don't mind (the heathens)

I have been wanting to read this for as long as I can remember, and I'm trilled with this version. It's too bad this Plato guy isn't still writing - ha ha ha

Sure, this is a translation of the Timaeus, but it actually could also be called an introduction to the Timaeus... because it's the best introductory Timaeus book I've seen. Why? First, the book has a clearly written, extensive introduction (48 pages!) that covers all the major themes of the Timaeus. It's like a mini-book in itself. Second, the book has a ton of explanatory notes (many of them extensive) that go along with the translation. Finally, Waterfield has tried as hard as he can to make the translation clear and readable -- the language is modern (but not anachronistic) and flows well (as well as it can, that is, given the content). If you're looking to learn about the Timaeus, I'd highly recommend getting this, and would definitely recommend reading the introduction first. Note: Cornford's "Plato's Cosmology"http://www.amazon.com/Platos-Cosmology-The-Timaeus-Plato/dp/0872203867is also helpful for learning about the Timaeus -- it basically gives a paragraph-by-paragraph commentary. But it's a bit more advanced than Waterfield and also analyzes EVERYTHING, which doesn't help if you're trying to figure out the main themes. I'd suggest looking at Cornford after reading Waterfield, or perhaps while reading Waterfield.

The notes to this edition are quite poor, many things wrong and misrepresented. Go with Kalkavage. Zeyl second. If you're serious you should also have the Loeb edition.
