*Disclaimer: I work with Server 2012 R2 every day, so my experience coming into this was an intermediate level.I echo the other reviewer's comments that this cannot be your only source for material. Is is very good, likely the best 70-410 prep book out there, but there are a couple of things to acknowledge before picking it up.1: It's impossible for your brain to absorb 1,200 pages worth of information with one read-through, and it's too long to read through several times. This isn't osmosis; you won't just eventually 'get it'. You need a second source of information.2: Even with its impressive depth, there's still some pieces missing - pieces you may be tested on. There were powershell cmdlets I was tested on that were not in the book.My study procedure was:1: Read the book cover to cover. Highlighted everything that warranted review. Did all the chapter tests and the post test.2: Went back through the book and copied everything I highlighted into a document. This would be my study guide. It referenced commands, memory tables, and page numbers to sections in the book that required extra study.3: Went through the whole Pluralsight 70-410 video series, skipping sections I was comfortable with.Passed on my first attempt.

This book is a good start and reference for exam 70-410. You will need this to pass but please don't fully rely on this book. You will FAIL if you do. I bought this book as well as purchased/practiced the Transcender and the Pearson test question. Just over 500 questions in both of them. Still I failed the first exam and passed the second exam. Though during the second exam, I resigned myself to failing. Questions in the actual test is not as simple as the test exams or the book. A lot of test questions do not give you the full picture and expect you to actually know the commands fully.Gone are the days of MS exams where you could memorize tests questions. Now when you pass, you really feel like you deserve it.YES, you need this book to help you pass the exam but don't rely on this book fully. TechNet and everything else including real life lab experience is what you need to pass.

Great book, I got it on January 31, I read it almost 3 times, took several notes and compiled a study guide from this material and also from CBT Nuggets new 70-410 course. I did the test on April 28th and passed on the first attempt with a 771 score. My strategy was:- Read the chapters for a given exam section.- Take notes and try to reproduce the instructions in the book using the CBT Nuggets labs.- View the CBT Nuggets videos related to the exam section, take more notes/screenshots if needed and of course follow along with the labs, try to be creative with the labs, do not stick to the options depicted on the video/book, you can break anything in there.- Compile all the PowerShell commands used in the book and CBT nuggets videos in your study guide- Repeat the process the number of times needed until you feel comfortable with the objectives.- I had access to Trascender 70-410 but I barely use it.

This book is a monster! At over 900 pages, it's not for the faint of heart. This is a serious book that is packed with a ton of great study material. I suppose you could just read the book cover to cover and be satisfied with the content, but I strongly recommend, at a minimum, setting up a virtual machine with Server 2012 R2 to work through each task detailed in the book. The hands-on aspect will help you retain a lot of the information for the 70-410 exam.

This book WAS helpful in passing the exam. I barely passed, and only by 1 or 2 questions. Some of the practice test questions that came with the book were similar to the real world exam questions. There were also a number of questions on the actual exam that I believe were outside the scope of the book, and probably outside the scope of 70-410... I'm also pretty sure a lot of the [trick] questions were written by sociopaths... I remember back in the days of NT4 and Server 2000 when the exam questions tested your real-world knowledge. Now-a-days, it seems like they just test you on the most obscure things they can think of, providing a myriad of similar answers that are just slightly wrong... As I was taking the exam, I thought to myself, "I bet somewhere in the 1000 page book I just read is that obscure power shell command, but I've used Windows Server for 10 years and I've always just used the GUI before"... Why isn't that a choice here? The whole point of Windows Server was that it had a nice GUI. I never understood why you'd bother with "server core"... Power Shell is fine too, but if the same thing can be accomplished in less steps in the GUI or with a previous tool, why bother re-inventing the wheel? Then again, this is just the "server" version of Windows 8, so my expectations should have been lower...I had looked at many other books before deciding to buy this one. This one is by far the best out there, but expect some pain on the 70-410 exam... Right now Microsoft is doing a "second chance" promotion, where if you fail you can take the exam again for free. The 70-411 and 70-412 "cert guide" books are non-existent as of this writing. I'm not sure if something happened to the author, or if Pearson just lost interest, but once you pass 70-410, I'm not sure what is the best book to continue.... I have not gone past 70-410 yet. Maybe it's best to just wait for Server 2016 at this point... I found the Microsoft Press books to be extremely lacking.

This book is great. Used this book, and a single CBT nuggets subscription... Finished this book and all the James Conrad videos and used the practice tests from Transender at cbtnuggets in about 2 1/2 weeks and passed with an 857. Not a very hard test but this book has most of what you need.

I have always loved story about the Amish, years ago I lived near Pennsylvania where there is a large number of Amish. My family and I would go to shops and buy fresh baked foods. I just love there simple life style. The hero in this book was raised Amish but felt God had a higher calling on his life. He wanted to protect and serve so he became a U.S.Marshal handling persons going into Witness Protection. Celeste a computer programmer happened to come across a program online where someone was emptying people's accounts. She sent her finding to the FBI and the person was arrested. Now the fun began, this story has drones, bombs, attempted kidnapping, bounty, and two people that found their other half. GOD always know what we need Jonathan had left home angry and confused, Celeste had wanted a family and a simple life. They both got what they were seeking.

This is part of a series of Witness Protection in Amish country. Was good, suspenseful, not graphically violent. Enjoyable series. Glad I purchased it!

Really enjoyed this installment of the Amish Witness Protection series. Having it deal with a cyber thief was very interesting.

Enjoyed the story, not as riveting as I would have liked,But I'd recommend this book as an interim to a more complex story.

Time was running out for Celeste Alexander. Her fingers flew over the keyboard. Knowing each keystroke could be the last before U S Marshall Jonathan Mast arrived to escort her to her new life in the Witness Protection Program. She would be in a small apartment In Pittsburgh for the months until she testified at Dexter Thomas’s trial. It had been almost two weeks since an evil genius computer hacker who went by the handle”Poindexter” had stolen tens of millions of dollars out of banks of ordinary Americans. But she had found him and now he was in jail. When Celeste gathered all the evidence she could she tipped off the Feds. But the stolen money still hadn’t been recovered. One thing almost fifteen years of programing had taught Celeste was that nothing was ever truly random no matter how it seemed. The Feds had promised that Celeste would remain anonymous but even from behind bars Dexter had other plans. Even after his arrest her nest egg had disappeared from her bank account. Two days later her apartment had exploded just as she had been steps away from walking through the door. Celeste wondered if she would have to cut her hair and wear contacts. If she would ever get back to writing computer code. Than she heard gunshot and she was pushed down and next came an explosion. She heard Karl- one of the Marshalls- when he told her to find cover. Than Marshall Jonathan Mast pulled her to her feet and told her who he was and for her to stay close, he would keep her safe. Jonathan had been raised Amish but at eighteen he left to follow his calling to serve and protect and become a cop. Jonathan than told Celeste he got an email from Karl to turn around she wouldn’t be here until the next day but Jonathan followed his gut as he felt something wasn’t right. The walkie talkie had jammed but Jonathan still found Celeste. She told him if he could get er to the walkie talkie jammer she could disarm itso Jonathan could get back in contact with his team. Jonathan was surprised because Celeste was the one in danger but offered to help her. Jonathan and Celeste went in the pantry As she was to drop through the pantry floor she looked and saw Dexter Thomas was the man was the man shouting the orders. Celeste told Jonathan as they were going through the tunnel and he said once she was safe he would call his boss Chief Deputy Louise Hunter. Than by the end of tunnel was what looked to be a body. Jonathan had her wait and found it was a Marshall he had known. Jonathan stopped at an out of the way diner and a man and a young woman tried to take Celeste again for the large amount of money being offered but they got away again when at a thrift store clearly where the Amish go the man looking like Dexter came in Celeste hid down near the floor. The Amish young woman helped hide her and get Celeste into Amish clothes. Jonathan stopped when he found it was his sister in law’s - Miriam - store to talk to Amos his older brother who was married to the woman who was helping Celeste. Celeste went with Amos but “ Dexter” stopped them but in Amish clothing Celeste was not recognized neither was Jonathan. . Celeste didn’t know but she was being passed off to another agent. Amos got Celeste back to Jonathan and helped them get to another vehicle. Jonathan was also dressed in Amish clothes. He had called his boss at the thrift store. Jonathan told Celeste he was raised Amish but left his family \as he had felt God had called him to be a cop. That he had just went about things wrong. But Celeste also said she lost track of the times he had called out to God to help them through. Than he told her she was being reassigned to agent Stacy and they probably would never see eachother again. Celeste was trying to ignore the prickling of tears at the edge of her eyelids and the pain of her breath as it rose and fell from her chest. Than a car came out of nowhere and hit them. The man had Celeste when Jonathan prayed and then came to get Celeste back. But the man used chloroform and Celeste would be out for awhile. Again it was for a fifty thousand dollar pay off. Than Jonathan decided to Take celeste to the safest place he knew- Amish country- Home. I loved this book The only problem I had was the Amish didn’t want to be involved with the Englishers. At least that's what I thought even to this day was ture. Maybe things have changed in the strictness of Amish beliefs. I loved Jonathan and Celeste together and how they interacted with each other. I loved how Amos and his family and Jonathan’s father helped to keep Celeste safe. How Celeste’s faith helped her through her ordeal. Jonathan was finding his way back to God also and I loved that. I wish I could rate this as a 4.5. I loved the characters and the ins and outs of this book.

My review today is on the Love Inspired Suspense, Amish Hideout. This is the first book in the Amish Witness Protection Continuity Series. I guess most of my readers by now know I like the Amish stories and I really like suspense so when I get books that contain both I'm always thrilled. I really enjoy Maggie's books so I was happy to get this one. It is well written, action packed, and full of faith. You are going to love this one.Computer expert Celeste Alexander has discovered the identity of a hacker that has been stealing money and causing turmoil all over. Now there is a price on her head. The US Marshal's have her at a safe house; it is broken into. The US Marshal assigned to her makes it into the house to rescue her but their escape is hindered when every where they go they are recorded on line and someone is trying to kidnap or kill her.US Marshal Jonathan Mast is assigned to Celeste's case he soon realizes he is in over his head with her technology. Jonathan's only option is to take her off the grid. He takes her back to his old home in an Amish community. Can he keep her safe in this other world? Will he lose his heart?A great journey of one who is solely into the technological age and one who barely knows how to turn on a computer. A master mind using all the technology he can get his hands on to spy on her and stop her work before she finds all the stolen money. God has a plan for these two, a plan for a hope and a future. God has a plan for you too. a good plan and not for evil. Give Him your heart and watch Him move in your life.

Powered by Girl: A Field Guide for Supporting Youth Activists, by Lyn Mikel Brown

Review

“When teen activist Julia Bluhm made headlines for challenging digitally altered images of young women in Seventeen magazine, the media omitted mention of her collaboration with adult women from the organization SPARK movement. Brown addresses a problem increasingly voiced within the girls’ rights movement; the persistence of a faux-feminist profit-driven ‘girl power’ image that threatens the coalition between adults and girls that’s needed for feminism to thrive. Using real examples of youth activists and the women who support them, she critiques mainstream methods of ‘girl empowerment’ and offers solutions that go beyond the celebration of individual ‘super girls.’”—Ms.“A refreshing counterpoint to age-old freakouts about teens’ lives, highlighting cool examples of girls who are working to change culture in big ways...this guide shifts the focus away from self-improvement and adults bestowing wisdom on teens and instead centers on ways women and girls can engage with each other as peers, sharing knowledge and shaping an entirely different world.”—Sarah Mirk, Bitch Magazine“Powered by Girl is for everyone—parents, mentors, and teachers—who work with girls. Even girls 14 and above who want to be activists can get a lot out of reading it. It offers an insight into how we can all work for a social change rooted in intergenerational and inclusive ways.”—Skipping Stones Magazine“Powered By Girl is inherently, intrinsically, and inevitably intersectional. It doesn’t fall victim to easy platitudes about what it’s like to fight for change as a girl or a woman, and it doesn’t ignore the complexities of difference (age, race, class, sexual orientation, ability, etc.) in these relationships. Intersectionality in supporting girls and fostering effective activism must be intersectional, and it must be collaborative...A must read for any woman even remotely close to being an activist, Powered By Girl demands that girls and women need to work together, learn from each other, and inspire each other to disrupt ingrained systemic injustices and oppression against women—all women. And that’s the key. Alone, we are doomed. But together, we are unstoppable.”—Kaitlin Tremblay, Shameless Magazine“If you’re committed to working with girls—and I mean really working with them in every respect, through all the messy beauty of their activism—Powered by Girl is an essential read.”—Loretta Ross, Co-founder of SisterSong“Highlighting the collective dimensions of girls’ activism, Powered by Girl is an important corrective to over-simplified discussions of girls’ empowerment. Brown’s passionate call for intergenerational collaboration engages with the challenges and rewards of this kind of activism, demonstrates a profound respect for girls’ knowledge and expertise, and asks all the right questions about how adults can better support girls in the struggle for a more just world.”—Jessica K. Taft, author of Rebel Girls: Youth Activism and Social Change Across the Americas“Behind every ‘exceptional’ girl is...a movement! Kudos to Lyn Mikel Brown for identifying the architecture that lifts up the next generation of feminists!”—Jennifer Baumgardner and Amy Richards, authors of Manifesta and Grassroots“If you teach, mentor, or work with girls, you need to read Powered by Girl. Full of stories and strategies, it’s a must-read manual for nurturing agency, sisterhood, and critical consciousness in girl activists. Adults will learn when to step up and when to step back, how to cultivate inclusiveness and truth telling among girls, and how to develop the most fertile conditions for girl activism to flourish.”—Rachel Simmons, author of Odd Girl Out and The Curse of the Good Girl“I am a huge fan of Lyn Mikel Brown’s; her partnerships with girls and support of their activism are nothing short of revolutionary. Powered by Girl explains how she joined forces across generations to make change—and, even better, how we can too!”—Peggy Orenstein, author of Girls & Sex: Navigating the Complicated New Landscape“Brown offers us a powerful and urgent critique of the media generated ‘kick-ass girl,’ a mythical girl who supposedly needs no one but herself to change the world. Behind the scenes, Brown shows us how real girls and women can truly kick some ass by working together on jointly constructed actions for social justice. An essential read for those who want to create a more just and humane world and want girls and women to lead the way. Read it right here, right now!”—Niobe Way, author of Deep Secrets: Boys’ Friendship and the Crisis of Connection“In this bold, inspiring book, Lyn Mikel Brown investigates the realities and possibilities of intergenerational activism—and does not shrink from the challenges. A blueprint for intergenerational feminist work, Powered by Girl offers multiple strategies for adult women to build hopeful, respectful activist relationship with girls, all the while acknowledging the complexities of grassroots politics today.”—Anita Harris, Research Professor, Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation, Deakin University“The development of honest dialogues between adult allies and girls is the key to social change—and recognizing that girls are the most qualified experts of their experiences is critical to their activism. Lyn Mikel Brown’s book accurately captures the benefits—and challenges—of how to nurture our next generation of change agents.”—Clarice Bailey and Charlotte Jacobs, Girls Justice League“Powered by Girl is a godsend for everyone who parents or works with girls. Girls are passionate about making the world a better place. But when they try to do so, obstacles appear that adults need to help with. Lyn Mikel Brown shows us how and challenges us to go far beyond vague good intentions by building genuine, respectful, mutually trusting relationships that succeed in making change both out in the world and inside ourselves.”—Nancy Gruver, Founder, New Moon Girls“Powered by Girl is the essential manual for anyone working with young activists—from youth workers to seasoned mentors. Lyn Mikel Brown presents the necessary skills for adult allies to be supportive and effective backseat drivers while girls do the steering.”—Wendy Lesko, President of Youth Activism Project and Co-Founder of School Girls Unite“In an increasingly commodified feminist movement, Powered by Girl offers insight into how girls and young women can reimagine a movement rooted in political activism, and gives activists the tools to do so in an intergenerational and inclusive way.”—Julie Zeilinger, Founding Editor, FBomb“Powered by Girl is a compelling narrative and rationale for feminist intergenerational practices with girls, dismantling ageist models of girls’ programming, and making visible the diverse ways coalitions of girls and their allies are pushing forward a new feminist agenda. An important book for all interested in girls’ studies and girls’ activism.”—Amy Rutstein-Riley, PhD, MPH, Principal Investigator of The Girlhood Project at Lesley University

"Because the media consistently suppressed collective collaboration and instead hyped Julia's individual achievement, she and her team lost a genuine opportunity to educate youth and the adults who work with them about the most important truth about effective social-change work: you don't do it alone."This is a great book on how to support girls in activism.I appreciate that this book goes into the difference between women in leadership roles and activism (for example, helping girls re-shape existing power systems so they can thrive instead of simply participating in current structures and going beyond "empowerment" to give girls the reigns) and how to support girls in their journeys. This book also talks about some of the struggles that groups supporting girls face such as not taking their experiences seriously or pushing an agenda that doesn't align with what the youth want to do. Discussing not only common problems but how to overcome them makes this book through. There's also lots on power structures and privilege and how it's okay to laugh and make mistakes. This is a wonderful book that educators/mentors/youth and organizations should all read and take to heart. By giving girls support and understanding when they're so young, we give them the tools they need to change the world.

With #metoo and the 2nd annual Women's march, it seemed like a good time to grab this book for another read. This book continues to be relevant and engaging for women and men who want to work with and support young women in achieving their own aims and ambitions as feminists and activists. First up is the firm reminder that young women aren't here to carry on the legacy of their elders; they are here to carry on the spirit of their elders, innovating and moving forward with their own visions. Second up is the mythbuster, still needed, that successful women activitists act alone. #metoo reinforces that, but how long will it take before we simmer back down to a world in which successful women are mavericks and one-offs rather than part of supportive and strong networks. The third idea that resonates is the mental shift in which women drive the conversation and write their own definitions of success rather than supporting each other in entering the male conversation and achieving "male" success. The author starts there and keeps right on going with practical advice and necessary cautions based on her academic work and experience. Worth reading as a mentor, a teacher, a parent, or even as a young women of high school age or beyond.

Powered by Girl: A Field Guide for Supporting Youth Activists, by Lyn Mikel Brown, is a well-organized book. I'm interested in developing a training program for young adults to become activists, so the subject of Brown's book was of interest. First, I appreciate and recognize the focus in this book on girls, but I note that many of the activist development issues also apply to boys. Second, my book now has numerous Post-it tags. There are many, many thoughtful tidbits throughout. I will have all my students read chapter 1, "The myth of the special girl." I also like chapter 3, which details 6 reasons why "...we should be engaging girls in activism and social-change work" (p. 48).This book seems written less for the girl activist, and more for the adult supporters of activist girls.

This volume is great as it is for leaders of groups of young women who want to effect change for helping to steer them and recognizing ways to assist that help promote their mission in a more authentic way.I agree with a second reviewer who suggested a volume be written for the girls themselves to help them recognize the ways they can be better and fight some societal issues themselves...having an adult to help empower you is wonderful, but it's great when you have that and your own standalone tools for helping yourself.

I was impressed by Lyn Mike Brown's "Powered by Girl". The author covers a lot of ground on engaging young girls in their activism from the girls understanding themselves to the world around them but also for those who are mentoring to understand as well. The author does a good job of reiterating and reinforcing but also inspiring. It isn't so long that it can overstay its welcome but it isn't so short that it comes off as trite feel-good babble. It has a nice grounded and thoughtful balance to it.

I loved reading Powered by Girl! It is a great book for educators and mentors who work with teen girls. Lyn Mikel Brown challenges readers to think critically about societies reactions to social movements that claim to empower girls. She takes on both gender and generational myths that threaten to impede girls from their place in activism as a coming-of-age right. Having worked with teenage girls in formal classrooms, summer camps, and in different countries, I wish I had read this book long ago. This book gets to the heart of what it means to empower girls and question our actions and assumptions. Powered by Girl does not always make intergenerational work sound easy, but it successfully expresses the importance with guidance and real-life examples for anyone dedicated to working authentically with girls.

Growing up and living in a small town is very different from growing up in a larger place. I was very interested to read the book to find out the challenges that girls face now and how adults are working to empower them.I agree that adults are stuck in their ways of this is how it is and this is how it's going to be when dealing with teens. I like the idea of the adults watching and interacting when needed but allowing the teens to try things for themselves and experience thing. But they always know they have the support that they need when they need it.I believe every female teacher, girl scout leader, any female who deals with teen girls should read this book. There is a ton of information that would better everyone not just activists. I know personally the way I interact with my niece's will change for the better in the future.
