Who knew that the American Theater Wing was about more than the Tony awards? Patrick Pacheco has written a gorgeous, wonderful love letter to the love of his life, enlisting his fellow artists to pen their own love letters to the American Theater Wing to celebrate it's 100th birthday. Even if you do not adore the theater as Patrick does, you may enjoy the story of what brave and determined women can achieve in advancing the cause of social justice and equality--before they even had the right to vote. Angela Lansbury, whose first encounter with the American Theater Wing was as a 14-year old refugee from the Blitz in 1939, sets the stage, to be followed by the famous (as well as not-so-famous) sharing their stories. Here's how it all started. As America entered World War I, playwright Rachel Crowther called for every woman with any connection to the theatrical profession to volunteer for the Stage Women's War Relief. They raised a tremendous amount of money (Theda Bara!), performing in hospitals, camps, training stations, service clubs/civic organizations, and battleships. After the war, the organization lapsed and was re-started when World War II broke out. The Stage Door Canteen served all Allied servicemen, regardless of race, which caused it to be threatened with closure and denounced on the Senate floor for "the mongrelization of the races". The response: "Go suck on an egg". It not only stayed open, but sprouted other canteens in other cities, the most famous of which was the Hollywood Canteen. Eleanor Roosevelt noted that the Stage Door Canteen was "the finest of all contributions toward war morale".These women were fierce. Take Margaret Halsey ("The canteen considered that a Negro serviceman who was good enough to die for a white girl was good enough to dance with her.") Here's one of her memos to the volunteer hostesses with regard to dancing with black soldiers:"You unconsciously, but arrogantly, assume that no male Negro can so much as glance at you without wanting to get you with child. The truth is, that while you are an attractive group of young women, there isn't a single one of you who's THAT good."Note that the female volunteers included the likes of Lauren Bacall, Gertrude Lawrence, Katherine Cornell, Tallulah Bankhead, Hazel Scott, Ingrid Bergman, Marlene Dietrich, Katherine Hepburn and Bette Davis, among others. Not all of them were women -- men entertained as well, such as Frank Sinatra, then at the height of his fame. There are so many stories and so little space in a review! Oh, and did I mention the gorgeous photographs! The American Theater Wing has, through its various programs, launched more illustrious careers than you can ever imagine, and it's all geared up to launch more in its next 100 years. As the late, great Joe Masteroff (Cabaret, ex-GI) said, the American Theater wing is many voices, fighting injustice. Get the book, hear the voices, you won't regret it. If, however, the idea of racial equality and social justice makes you a bit queasy, then it's probably not going to be your cup of tea no matter how much you love the theater.

A friend told me about the book before it was released. She said it was going to be great. She says that about all of the books she recommends. This time she was spot on.I have read the book twice cover to cover. You will want to study the beautiful photos and delightful stories of the past 100 years of theater.

“The restless depression which had come to so many of us because of the war gradually was making life—which had been interesting and stimulating—dull and selfish and narrow. It was intolerable to go on with daily routine. It was Dorothy Donnelly’s idea that we must have a workroom or our own, where only women of the theater world worked, and where enthusiasm and success would grow out of comradeship and our understanding of each other and sharing of a common responsibility.” So wrote Rachel Crothers, a playwright and co-founder of the Stage Women’s War Relief, in 1917. That sentiment—comradeship as the answer to national malaise, of discovering a bigger, shared purpose—has eery resonance now. The time could not be better for a book such as this, chronicling the American Theater Wing’s 100 glorious years. Through dozens of stories and striking photographs, the reader is taken on a journey that started with Crothers and other inimitable, inspiring, incomparable women, and continues to this day. The book’s editor, veteran theater journalist Patrick Pacheco, exhaustively researched and interviewed many whose lives were touched over the past ten decades by the American Theater Wing’s spirited ethos. Without giving away too much of the gold—you’ll have to read it for yourself—suffice it to say this timely book gives voice to a history we would all do well to remember. Unity, then as now, is the only way forward.

I love Patrick Pacheco’s book, American Theatre Wing, an Oral History:100 Years, 100 Voices, 100 Million Miracles! This inspiring book celebrates, among others, fierce American women, founding this fine organization when they didn’t even have the right to vote! These were strong, intuitive, compassionate and patriotic women who sacrificed everything for their love of the theater through two world wars and beyond. As the co-founder of the American Theater Wing, Rachel Crothers (a suffragette and playwright) stated, “the trained imagination of the theater can be used for serving humanity in more ways than entertainment.” One of my favorite aspects of the book is that it brings attention to both the poor and unheralded artists as well as the very famous—like Angela Lansbury, Patti LuPone, Rosie O’Donnell, Neil Patrick Harris and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The very nature of the Wing’s impactful programs is to nurture theatrical talent in marginal, poor and under-served communities. This book salutes Audra McDonald as a six-time Tony Award winner but on the next page, it touts the achievements of a poor struggling theater in inner city Chicago. The photos alone are a historical treasure but its the voices, all 100 plus, that resonate with insight, inspiration and humor. The American Theater Wing and their incredible mission has impacted our country in more ways than I ever imagined! Bravo Patrick Pacheco!

I love this book. At first glance, it's an amazing array of photos in a coffee table book setting. However, reading through it, it's a book about American History and how several amazing Women just happen to use their role in American theatre to champion soldiers, veterans, students, and much more. It's also a book you can come back to and read more.

A Quiet Genocide is an interesting novel which brings to light the horror of Hadamar – a Nazi hospital where more then 10,000 disabled children were murdered. Though I cannot say that I enjoyed the book because the subject matter is definitely not trivial, it was a great novel. Well worth the read.

I really liked this book. I loved The Book Thief (awesome movie and book btw) and this felt similar to it in that it is a story in the middle of world war two and makes you think about how people still had to make it through things that seem impossible. I love historical stuff and I knew going in that there might be some sad parts, there are, one particularly part near the end that might result in tears. The only thing I didn't really like about the book is the title, the subheading in particular. You already know it's coming somewhere in the book and that gives away a lot of what you will expect while reading. I guess you could say it was a spoiler in the subheading. I think it's purpose is to draw more initial interest in the book, which it does, but also gives away too much. If I had not known where the author was going from the title I would have been completely surprised in the story. Kind of like how if you read the back of the dvd of Slingblade (another awesome movie) the back tells a huge part of the movie that you would enjoy a lot more if you did not know it was coming. This book is obviously researched really well and it is obvious the author has spent some serious thought into why things were done and characters look at issues from both sides in realistic ways. Like most readers, I have several books to read at the moment but I actually took my time with this one and savored it. I almost did not want to finish it because it was so interesting. You have to make sure to keep going after you finish the story because there are descriptions of several interesting books produced by the publishing company. The company produces historical fiction as well as historical nonfiction from World War Two. I was fortunate enough to recieve a free copy to be able to review this and I hope the author produces more books like this in the future. I have no affiliation with the author and if I didn't like the book I would explain my dislike.

A Quiet Genocide from new author Glenn Bryant is a quiet book. Right up until it punches you in the gut. It’s historical fiction with a topic I’ve never seen broached. And I’ve read WW2 stories for decades now.It opens in post-WW2 Munich with the Diederichs. They’re a small family—just young parents and their grade school aged son. Catharina is a housewife, and Gerhard is a businessman. Young Jozef is a typical boy. But Gerhard drinks too much, Catharina is dissatisfied with life, and Jozef is mischievous. And Gerhard has a friend, Michael, who’s uncomfortably menacing. The book then jumps forward to Josef’s first year at university, when things start to unravel. Catharina is more restless. Gerhard is less discreet. And Jozef begins to question his own reality.Since the book’s subtitle is The Untold Holocaust of Disabled Children in WW2 Germany, I anticipated grisly details. When Bryant delivers, it’s more of an intense emotional hit than a gruesome one. But it still hurts. Especially given the kinds of things happening in the 2018 United States. My conclusionsBryant writes like an author with many more books to his credit. A Quiet Genocide is absorbing. Its truth-telling is subtle, and unfurls like a big black umbrella on a rainy day. The book has a darkness to it from the start. Then that umbrella opens and the true storm begins.Bryant learned of this specific genocide while studying modern history at university. Stunned that it’s not taught more often, he determined to make people more aware. Using fiction as a tool makes the story more palpable. There were tens of thousands of families like the Diederichs. Their story deserves to be told.I’m also intrigued to know about Amsterdam Publishers, a small house that specializes in Holocaust Memoirs and WW2 historical fiction. Their catalog looks like something to work my way through.I hope you’ll give this book a try. The Kindle version will be available on August 22, just next week. It’s well worth your time!AcknowledgementsThanks to Glenn Bryant and Amsterdam Publishers for a digital advanced readers copy of A Quiet Genocide. As always, this review is entirely my own honest impressions and writing.

I read a lot of WWII fiction and this book joined my shelf of favorites. It takes place in the 1950s in Germany and is about the after effect of the war as well as flashbacks to the war years. There are still people in Germany who are part of the National Socialist party and former Nazis who are unhappy with the changes in their country since the end of the war.The main character is Jozef. He grows up in a fairly happy household with two parents. A friend of his father's, Michael, visits once a week to talk politics and drink with his dad. The day before Jozef goes away to university, his parents tell him that he is adopted which makes him question his entire life. While at the university he is thirsty for knowledge and learns more about WWII and eventually about the way that the Nazis euthanized people who were handicapped - both mentally and physically. He also tries to find out about his birth parents which further unsettles his life. This novel had a great story but was also written to teach the reader about Germany - before, during and after WWII. Even though I read a lot of fiction from this era, I learned several items that I'd never known before which to me is the sign of a great work of historical fiction. An interesting fact - this book was published by Amsterdam Publishing that was founded in 2012. I read this on their website and plan to look into some of their other books.AMSTERDAM PUBLISHERS IS SPECIALIZED IN HOLOCAUST MEMOIRS & WW2 HISTORICAL FICTION.HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR STORIES NEED TO BE KEPT ALIVE.I read an advance copy of this book. all opinions are my own.

Great book. Lots of topics covered. One minor complaint: the Kindle version is hard to read the diagrams. I have to flip back and forth to landscape and portrait mode to see diagrams details. Something to consider if you prefer kindle books like me.

I am a little more advanced than what the book covers but that's okay since there were some things that I didn't know about until I got the book

Clear, easy to understand eq recommended.

I bought this book just after reading "Getting started with Arduino" - hoping that this book would enhance my knowledge enough that I would not break everything I plug into the Arduino with its Atmel Microcontroller.Sofar it has been great. I have a degree in Computer Science, so some of the "This is a microprocessor, this is what makes it up" stuff was redundant for me, but this will not be the case for everyone. The "Electronics 101" section is really helping me a lot - I don't have to pester my EE friend with nearly as many questions!

Great book for getting started in embedded. Does a good job of explaining the cryptic world of microprocessors in a way that feels natural. Unlike some technical books that feel like they were written BY a microprocessor...

One of the best books I've read on the subject. It could do with an update, but I really enjoyed it, more so that other O'REILLY offerings. It walks you through the basics, touches on embedded programming, but goes into a few example system designs. The part I really that I really liked was the writing style the author used, very upbeat and non-critical.

This was a good, well written book, for the quick time I spent with it. It was very basic. So if you are more on the the beginner side of the spectrum, this might be 5 stars for you. If you are more advanced, it might be 1 star. I returned it because, for me, it was too basic.

Although it is used, it is in great condition and from basics to the final concept all is there. Many things are known to somebody with an engineering degree, but it's a very good refreshing for certain points you did not use for several years.

I've read an insane number of books on the current economic crisis (I was Michael Lewis' research assistant for The Big Short) and this is one of the few that I would put in the "must read" category.Very few of the recent published books on the US economic crisis have an adequate historical perspective. In Inflated, Chris gives us a very full history -- he starts at the founding of the Republic! The book is nonetheless extremely entertaining. I found myself captivated by it, and finished it fairly quickly.Chris is an endearing narrator who is obviously more detail-oriented than many of his fellow commentators -- he clearly brings a high level of understanding to this work. The book is very much of the Austrian School. I don't fully agree with some of Chris' views -- I think I'm generally more tolerant of inflation and inflation risk than he is.Chris is quite pessimistic about the long future of the American economy, but I think I'm more pessimistic. He believes that austerity measures are required in the US and that the US will be able to weather these austerity measures fairly well socially and politically. I believe that the US cannot deal with austerity measures socially or politically -- therefore, they will not occur. The consequences of a lack of austerity are anyone's guess. Chris believes that high rates of inflation are inevitable without austerity -- I think high inflation and declining living standards are likely but not inevitable.I find Chris overall views on debt and inflation quite similar to those of Peter Warburton, author of the truly incredible book, Debt and Delusion. The views of both of these authors are wholly different than the New Keynesian thinking of Ben Bernanke. I tend to slightly favor the Warburton/Whalen side of the debate.Brandon

As usual, this was first posted on another site, which explains reference to Amazon reviews in the last paragraph....I thought this was going to be another crisis book--I must have read 20 of them--but it turned out to be an exceedingly pleasing historical treatise on intersection of money, debt, politics, and monetary policy over the two centuries. (I decided to read it out of my deepest respect for Chris' analytical skills.) Although much of the material will not be new to connoisseurs of fine economic history, I thought it was tied together very nicely. I, for example, found the discussion of bimetallism and the underlying political currents fascinating. (I realized that I had failed to understand William Jenning Bryan's famous "cross of gold" speech.) Chris generally does an excellent job of describing the political cross currents underlying important political events. I also think this book dovetails nicely with Reinhart's and Rogoff's "This Time is Different" in that it delves into the slow, methodical undermining of our monetary system--a single case study of sorts. As I was nearing the end of the book, I began to see what I would call the "praying mantis model." We got handed the reserve currency and a globally profound position. We got to run the world. As debts accrued, our creditors kept assuring us that, as masters of the universe, we were good for it. ("You guys just keep spending.") We didn't understand the end game: It's a suicide mission. (The male praying mantis gets eaten after copulating.) Whalen finishes with a few words of encouragement, but I am not convinced he believes them. To use Mauldin's term, we are going to muddle our butts off.As usual, I went to Amazon to see what others had to say. Of course, there were strong reviews from Chris' friends (Rickards, Laggner, and probably a couple others). Looking at the weakest reviews, there were aspersions to his political ideology--don't read this if you love FDR--but I would say that Chris kept me on my heels with his ability to show layers of the onion. The typos were also omnipresent, which I personally care about but was not distracted by. Somebody demanded a fusillade of charts and data, but I enjoyed the reliance on prose often characteristic of the Austrians. Everybody who reviewed the book comments about Chris' intellectual firepower and analytical skills.

Whalen is, in my opinion, possibly the best banking analysts working in the US today, for the reasons mentioned in other reviews - his honesty, straight-forward presentation of fact and, oddly, his ability to present the frightening truth with a dose of friendly optimism that keeps average people from burying their heads in the sand. The strong side of this book is the historical perspective, that our predicament is not nearly as new as we may wish to believe. He properly makes the case that the fight for soft/hard money, the extreme political/economic power of the national banking oligarchy and short-sighted/corrupt/destructive politicians as the norm, not the exception are all part of the long and rich history of America. This seems to me to be extremely important to those attempting to make sense of what is happening in America and across the globe today. The writing is not the best. Its not 'entertaining', it could be better organized, have a stronger 'unified' line throughout the book, be less dependent on footnotes or glorify the author as an oracle. All valid criticism of a writer. But, Whalen's not really a writer, he's an analyst - maybe now a financial historian. It seems to me that he did what he set out to do, to present to a wide audience how we got here, and not simply a case of the last 5-10 years like every other pop-financial writer out there who worked in an Ibank, or hung out with those who did.I believe this is a very important book, with appropriately geeky zits. It is true to its author's approach to analysis. I am taking the lack of writer polish as a positive.
