What an Amazing book, Julie, Mark and Virginia did an excellent job on portraying Norbert with his Smiles and love to all he meets. What a lovely Birthday gift Julie for this release date, and I think Parker Rose is definitely a "precious Miracle!"

I can't say enough wonderful things about Norbert and his family! His lessons are right on time and seeing his great pictures brings tears of joy to my eyes every time! Julie has done a super job of training Norbert but his soul was there to bring all that training to life! Her help putting Norbert's lessons into people-words and Mark's photographs have created the biggest little wonder-dog ever! Thanks to you all for sharing the joy every day.

You're a unique little star that warmly shines upon the sick little kids who adore you! You're the world's ewok budha and life is better 'cause you're born...Yes... I'm very partial :)

I saw this dog and book on Hallmark Home and Family. After ordering the book and reading it I bought enough to give to my family and friends. Most have made it their "coffee table" book. When things aren't going right or you are feeling down all you have to do it read about Norbert and you will have a smile on your face. My sister is an HR manager and she uses it to cheer up employees who are having a bad day. Best book to have in your life.

I love Julie Steines and little Norbert. She and Norbert go to hospitals to cheer up pediatric patients. Mark Steines, who did the photography for the book, is a fabulous photographer. I hope her earlier books go into publication again because I can't afford the "collectable" versions. Her mom did most, if not all of the artwork for the earlier books.

My mom and I pore over Jacques' cookbooks to enjoy his paintings and page embellishments as much as we enjoy his recipes, and watching the Pépin family cook on-screen was a family tradition when I was a kid. (More often than not, my mom and I recreated their dishes in our own kitchen.) Two years ago, I went to a language-immersion school in Lyon to study French, something that made me feel even more connected to Jacques and Claudine. All that plus the the fact that I've met Jacques in person at culinary conferences and have found him to be just as wonderful in real life as he is in his shows and books makes me a fervent fan. So yes, I had pretty high expectations of this book when I saw who had created it...and then I cracked open the book and was utterly enchanted. Turns out the only thing better than browsing through a Pépin cookbook is getting to browse through a Pépin cookbook in French! (With the English equivalent ever-so-handily on the opposite page.)I was delighted to see that while the recipes are kid-friendly, this is a book for everybody, especially French-reading home cooks who want to brush up on their language skills and learn culinary terms. (For instance, "tablespoons and teaspoons" in French are "soup spoons and coffee spoons," and "marmite" is a stock pot. That explains the British condiment.) You'll find plenty of French classics here, from Clafoutis to Ratatouille to Bouef Bourguignon, all of which Claudine demystifies in an easygoing, casual way that's bound to make you want to get in the kitchen and cook. This book is perfect for anyone who is learning French, or who loves French food, or who loves to cook! (Well, I'd say anyone age 12 and up - I'll explain why below).With having one side be in English, and the facing page be in French - for every single page and recipe! - this book is *amazing* for anyone who is learning French (or who speaks French and who is learning English), as well as for anybody who wants to learn French cooking - or for that matter, anyone who just loves to cook!And when I say anyone, I mean anyone *other* than young children, because while this book is positioned as being for children, it is *not* a children's cookbook. In fact I would say that it's most appropriate for ages 12 or so up through adult. It is *not* a picture cookbook, or written at a level for younger children. (Use the 'Look Inside' feature of this listing to see what I mean.)Seriously, this cookbook would be a wonderful addition to just about any cookbook collection (and I should know, I've got dozens of them ;-) ).

I love this cookbook. It is great for kids, but I find it amazing as an adult. It has recipes in English, and then in French. I also love how there is the English word for say "cheese" and then the French pronunciation as well. This is a fun cookbook with some great recipes. I cannot wait to try them all out! Highly recommended for all ages.

I bought this book for my 3 boys as an Easter gift. One of the boys, age 11, (not the one I originally thought would take the most interest in this book) has now decided he may want to pursue a career as a chef and have his own restaurant. He made the creme brule (with minimal help from me) and it was fantastic! Then on his own went on to make crepes and sables out of this book. I didn't help him with either of those recipes. They are easily written for a young chef to follow and cook on his own. I would definitely recommend this book to others who have young people in their lives interested in French cooking. This book is wonderful! Lovely quality, well worth the price. My niece is in French immersion and got this for her Easter basket, not going to lie I went through and photo copied some of the recipes, would buy again!

There are no photos of the dishes in here which doesn’t help kids decide what to cook. Also, feels as though it caters to an American palate rather than French nationals. Was hoping for a more authentic French cuisine experience

The recipes are both in French and in English. They're not too difficult for a beginner, and they're a wonderful way to learn the French language and the French culture. I'm looking forward to trying many of the recipes.

Written in both English and French with each recipe on two facing pages so you can learn a language and cook!The recipes are classic, very Pepin, and the book is well written. Great book if you love cooking with your kids too.

First of all, I know a bunch of people might be worried that I bought the wrong copy of EVE AND ADAM.. thanks, but I know that it's only chapters 1-5. I had ordered this from the library, and I couldn't wait for it to get here, so I got a head start. Not only that, but I love that they offer free choice. 1-5 stuff because you can see if you really want to get the book or if it already sounds boring. I love Michael Grant' s writing style... the book literally sucks you in... DO NOT HESITATE TO BUY THIS BOOK!!!!<<<<>>>><3

I wasn't paying attention. I thought it was BOOK 1-5. This is some sort of promotion and there wasn't even enough for me to know if the book was any good.

I've decided to read the sample first to see how bad this book is, seemingly setting how many bad ratings I've seen on goodreads, but after reading the sample, this is a pretty decent book. It's not terrible, but it's not that great also. It talks about this whole that has no point at all in this story but the good thing is, the story keeps going and doesn't bore you.

After reading Eve and Adam I was a little disappointed, I felt that there was not enough of a love triangle between the two boys and Evening. I think that it would have made an interesting sequel if the book ended with Adam meeting Eve leaving us on a cliffhanger. Compared to many other love triangle based books I have read (Twilight, Hunger games, Matched, ect.) I think it had plenty of suspense, romance, and action, plus plenty of shocking secrets and was very well written overall. Even so, it lacked in standing out from other books (aside from the whole woman creating man aspect) because the book was consisted of (SPOILER!!!!!!) a girl who finds out she has superhuman abilities, a love triangle where everyone is happily matched up in the end, and running from the villains. Over all though, I highly reccomend it to anyone interested in sci fi romance.

Eve and Adam is a cute, young adult science fiction book.Eve, a teen who is mostly worried about her homework, is in an accident and her leg is almost severed. Her mother shows up at the hospital and transfers her to the bio-pharmaceutical company that she owns. Mom sets daughter up with a project: design the perfect man, via genetic simulation on a computer. Eve's best friend helps her a bit as Eve thinks about the ideal intelligence level, muscles, and such. While Eve is in Weird Science land, Solo, her mother's ward, shows up and meets her. Solo gets Eve to see some truths about her life and involves her in his plan to destroy her mother.This book is definitely set up for young adults. I'm a forty-year-old housewife and I enjoyed it, but if I were to write it for my age group, there'd be a lot more substance in it.That said, I think I'll try to get my daughter to read it in a few years. There are some great discussion topics in it.Is there such a thing as too intelligent?Is helping a lot of people worth hurting a few?What is morally acceptable in the pursuit of research?

review I devoured this book in three sittings - life got in the way else I would've finished it in one.It starts out a little slow but once the story starts, it doesn't stop and moves a frenetic speed towards a rather dissatisfying ending. I'm assuming this is the first book in a series, because if it isn't I will be furious! Premise - brilliant. Prose - crisp and almost acerbic. Characters - different, interesting, over the top, lovely. Story - great but... I'm not sure what the but is here. I think I just wanted more out of this story particularly more from Solo who I thought was really the star of the book and deserved way more time telling his story than he got. Whole book written from Solo's POV please, Michael Grant!Also, do not let the title put you off becuase you think you know where the story will lead and how the relationship will work out. Without providing any spoilers, suffice it to say, you will be pleasantly surprised that Grant manages to avoid cliche.

Can’t comment on the story. But, not happy I paid new hardcover price for a used Library copy!

Make no mistake. This book is more about history than art. (Or the history of art, as I was taught it in college, where images cannot be separated from the artist and the times that produced them.) As someone who majored in art history in college, I found its blend of art, context and personality utterly compelling. But if you're looking for lavish illustrations of Monet's celebrated water lily paintings, as one reviewer lamented, you won't find them. (The Internet has scads of images of them, of course.)If, however, you're interested in a detailed, comprehensive and incisive account of Monet the man and the circumstances that led him to create his water lily paintings, or Grande Decoration, as he envisioned them, you'll find that in spades. And In my book, it's the only way they have any real meaning, and why I found the book so interesting.Author Ross King is a skilled, fluent writer, who brings the people and their era to life. He's done so much research that w=much of the book reads almost like fiction, with strongly defined characters and the kinds of details that grab your attention. (Monet's fondness for food, for instance, and the famous lunches he'd serve his guests.) The horrors of World War I, which was the backdrop behind many of Monet's water lily paintings (they helped serve as a distraction for him) are vividly depicted. And Monet's beloved home in Giverny is as much a character as his close friend, the statesman and journalist Georges Clemenceau and his family members, especially his stepdaughter, daughter-in-law and helpmate, Blanche. While Monet's Impressionist colleagues are dying (or have died), he remains robust for his age, even while the infirmities of old age are taking their toll, especially cataracts that make it harder and harder for him to see the colors and landscapes that led to his fame and fortune.In the end, this is a detailed snapshot of a period in the life of one of the world's greatest and most beloved artists, made possible through King's exhaustive research and skillful writing.If I have one gripe, it's that at times it seems as if the book is a bit too long, which is why I've deducted one star. But rest assured, if you're interested in late 19th/early 20th century art and the events and people who produced it, this is an exceptionally good read.

This is not a biography of Monet’s life. It is not a review of his prolific body of work. It is a story of the last 20 years or so, of the last living, and arguably greatest, Impressionist artist. The story is well positioned amidst the historical transition in France from the Belle Epoch through the horrors of German occupation in WWI. Some reviewers were disappointed by the focus on Clemenceau....I felt it was a bonus. Their lives were clearly intertwined, and I felt that I learned a lot about the marvelous old Tiger and his own epic role in history, and his strong advocacy for Monet.My strong likes include the accurate portrayal of Monet’s retreat to Giverny, and how he generated hundreds of paintings with his intermingled love of gardening on a grand scale. Compared to a sterile or idealized portrayal of Monet, I love the portrayal of Monet’s humanistic features: the good and the bad. We witness an artist, recognizing that he is past his prime, and close to death, physically and mentally struggling to complete one last epic work: the Grand Decoration. These are the black times in the closing years of any great artist.The book could well be considered the final chapter of Mr. King’s wonderful book “The Judgement of Paris”. Without reading that book first, “Mad Enchantment” could seem very incomplete. We learn for instance, that there are still strong critics of the whole Impressionist movement in the 1920’s, just as there were at the start of the Impressionist movement. Also since this book focuses on the struggles to complete the Grand Decoration with the water lilies, it skims over the dozens, if not hundreds, of other paintings produced by Monet during this time. If the story line seems disjointed it’s because Monet's efforts were mercurial during this period, ranging from frenetic painting, to months of inactivity, to months of physical struggling with his cataracts.Mr King is a great story teller. His great skill is placing the subject of his writings into appropriate historical context. He did the same with “Brunelleschi’s Dome”. I came away with a real sense of Monet’s last years, a greater impression of his will to live and create, and a real sadness for his personal struggles at the end of his life. He becomes “knowable” like a real acquaintance....and perhaps that is the greatest feat of Mr. King’s work.For readers who want a complete overview of the life of Monet and his work, there are other bibliographies. Carla Rachman’s 1997 effort for the Phaidon series of artists, is a good example. In fact there are many similarities of how Rachman and King record the last years of Monet’s life.

Full disclosure: I am an unrepentant fan of Monet, from his early experiments with light through the awe-inspiring panorama exhibited in l'Orangerie whose conception and implementation motivate this book. The Water-Lily project occupied much of the last decade-plus of Monet's life, hence was inevitably influenced by much that Monet experienced throughout this period: the personal tragedies of deaths in his family; the grand tragedy of World War I; the impact both of Monet's rather difficult personality and of his life on a pedestal during this period. But the story did not end even with Monet's death. The Water Lily exhibit that millions now queue up for had yet to endure the major "anti-Impressionism" art movement of the early-to-mid 20th century, until the post-World War II revival of appreciation of Monet and his oeuvre. I understand fully how many readers will chafe at King's detailed descriptions of the history that impacted Monet and of the personalities (mainly Clemenceau) that so influenced him, but I believe that one cannot fully understand the man and his mission without appreciating the magnitudes as well as the natures of these external influences. The book develops its portrait of Monet with sober sympathy: a difficult yet dedicated genius. As a final note, I really appreciatedKing's discussion in the Epilogue, of the artistic details in the "Water Lilies".

If you love historical fiction, the Underground Railroad and/or have a penchant for art history this book hits the trifecta.I don't like to do spoilers in my reviews but as with all good things in life proceed with caution.Upfront, I loved that the author doesn't always make it clear who is black/African American or a descendant of slaves unless ironically the concept of being high yellow, red bone or dark is introduced by another black person.There are a time jumps from a Plantation in the South prior to the Civil War and a NYC modern day law firm.Women and their roles in society dominate the narrative whether it's the frail /sick plantation owner, her house girl (slave), a young hippie artist in the 1980s and beautifully flawed power lawyer today.Slavery reparations is legally and philosophically grappled with along with descendants rights. The "House Girl" and her female master/owner both produce fine art paintings while the moral and legal art rights are debated over a century later. We wrestle with the finding of descendents, children left behind while parents travel the underground railroad and the "better life" centuries later .This is book is one I want my daughters to read. The ongoing sense of self worth, living your passion and parental forgiveness are wonderfully handled.I highly recommend this book for both its historical and modern moral significance.

I was given the hardbound book and began to read it. Within a couple chapters, I realized that I cannot read this book with bad bedside lighting... Because I couldn't put it down. So I purchased the e-book, knowing that with the backlight on my phone, I could read in a dark room! (And wherever I was with an extra few minutes of downtime.)This story takes the life of a slave girl in the 1800's, and intertwines it with the life of a young attorney in today's world. The descriptive prose of the South almost made me smell the flowers, dirt, and dust in the rugs. It is a methodical meandering of lives and inner growth for almost everyone you meet in the story. The braiding of lives, into a final understanding is masterful. I am anxious to read whatever this author brings next!

I loved the premise of this novel, but did not care for the scattered way it was told. The title makes the book seems as though the it will be about Josephine the slave, but it is really about Lina the lawyer and her tedious journey to win a case- not as interesting. I couldn’t help but feel the plot had some outrageously unlikely events… SPOILERS…- Lina can uncover the genealogy of a woman who lived 150 years ago, but she didn’t have the gumption to research the death/disappearance of her own mother.- Lina happens to be introduced to the actual decedent of Josephine and beneficiary of the Bell Art Estate.- The Bell Estate Librarian trusts Lina with a document she obscured from the other lawyers, and it just happens to reveal everything Lina needs to verify her witness.-At the very end Lina copies and distributes case details, which seems pretty legally imprudent for a lawyer to do.- Dan says at end he took on the Reparations Case on contingency, meaning he wouldn’t be paid unless Reparations were actually granted- yeah right!Other than that, I thought the lengthy letters in the book were just fluff and the character I wanted to know more about, Josephine, had her perspective told the least.

This book is one of those that go back and forth between the past and the present. In the past, Josephine Bell, a house girl slave cared primarily for Missus Lu Ann Bell, a sickly woman. Missus Lu had 17 miscarriages and was broken-hearted that she was denied children. Josephine was the closest child to her. She taught her to read and write, secretly of course. Missus Lu aspired to paint and often allowed Josephine free reign with the paints and easel. Josephine's gift was obvious. First and foremost in Josephine's mind was to "run".In the present, Carolina (Lina) Sparrow, a young attorney had just been assigned to collaborate with coworkers on a reparation case, reparation for slavery. A bit of background on Lina...she was 24, living with her father, Oscar, an artist. Lina's mother had been killed in an auto accident when Lina was 4, or so she was always told. Her mother, Grace, had also been an artist. Lina took this case of the reparation with ferver. She had to find a descendent of Josephine's, if there even was one. Her searches uncovered much. She did find the truth of Josephine Bell, the little slave House Girl. As all accounts of the evils of slavery, this can be hard to read at times, but it is a very touching and telling story of two amazingly strong women, Josephine Bell and Lina Sparrow.

This book is two disparate stories with loose threads that bind them together, and first-time author Tara Conklin brilliantly succeeds in weaving this tale of Josephine Bell, a slave on a Virginia plantation in the mid-1800s, with the modern-day story of Lina Sparrow, a first-year attorney at a high-powered New York City law firm who traces Josephine's descendants to find a lead plaintiff for a reparations class action lawsuit.The story of Josephine is realistic and heartbreaking--a story of courage, spunk and determination against all the odds. Having been a teacher for 15 years in adult education, I went into sub teacher. I wanted to read and learn some techniques and thought this book woudl help. Yes, there are Some great ideas in here (like getting the kids to do their name cards but draw something on there that they love/hobby etc to get to know a bit about them and help strike up a conversation!) from an experienced sub teacher. Other great ideas I've liked is about having a box of tricks such as a book to read, band aids, tissues and spare paper as all of these have come in handy in my first month of subbing! I also like reading other subs' experiences and questions. However, the reason why this book loses two stars is that it doesn't address the real main issue of behaviour and discipline that I've found to be THE most challenging aspect of subbing. This is where you need to know the school policies as well as have your own methods of discipline plus watch how other experienced teachers and subs do it. Ultimately it's a real challenge to get the kids to always adhere as they will always test the boundaries. It's a good introductory guide

I've been a substitute for less than a year and I've bought several books on this subject. This one is the best on the subject--it's organized to be read in a random order-- and that makes it very useful. I can look up an issue that's on my mind on any particular day--and read up on that topic. This is a great one for anyone who's new at teaching.

This book gave a lot of tips for being an effective substitute teacher. It is chuckful of interesting tidbits to help newbies in the field. I particularly liked that the professional standpoint that it took on how to make a good name for yourself as a substitute teacher. It is a very positive book. It is easy to read because the writer does not talk above you or at you rather at your level. Nor is it like the typical self help books that tend to drive the reader into overload with all sorts of new information. I would say it is more along the lines of reasoning and wisdom when it comes to teaching children. I appreciated the perspectives that Barbara offered in her book. They gave a lot of food for thought. I enjoyed reading it.

It is well written and reading it doesn’t feel like a chore. It has an engaging voice and the tips and suggestions are very helpful.

Good recommendations for subbing especially technics for younger children.

I expected more insight on what to except and more examples.

His tanks were greatly successful in the invasions of Poland and France and, perceived as pro-Nazi, Guderian was much in favour. However, when the Russian invasion failed in the winter of 1941, Guderian was forced to resign, not to regain his position until 1944, when the war was all but lost. He died in Bavaria in 1954.

In his 1937 book the organizer of the German armored forces told his future foes:How the German armored forces would fight the next war & why then would fight that way. He surveys the history of the tank, giving concrete examples of the lessons learned from specific WWI battles. He surveys ( pretty acurately too ) the armored forces of future German opponents USSR, Great Britain and France, noting their perceived shortcomings. He even gives the reader his “wish list” of equipment, he believes the German armored forces needed but were lacking. The Germans then fought WWII just as he laid it out! A primary source from the principle creator and user of the panzer division. It should be the start of any study of mobile war in WWII.

Anyone who has studied the history of mobile warfare has been exposed indirectly to Guderian's precepts, but nowhere are they more coherently and simply explained than by the master himself. Most of this book is a history of World War I on the western front, but written in a way to draw conclusions, as sort of a giant debriefing examining where both sides screwed up. He lays out the evidence with hard numbers that destroys the arguments of his contemporaries, who advocated dispersing tanks and tying them to the pace of the infantry. He examines where the French and British hit on the right formula, and where they made mistakes and failed to exploit their tremendous success with massed tank attacks. Written in 1937, he spells out what Germany must do to exploit modern technology to avoid the stalemate of the Great War, and create a rapid victory. He describes the creation of Germany's Panzer divisions in detail that her enemies would have done well to study. It is rare for a man who was a vigorous, lead-from-the-front combat leader to have also the writing skill to put his well-reasoned studies into interesting form; hence the rare value of this volume. This belongs in your collection.

I am only through the first half of the book, and am very happy with Guderian's text and analysis. There are only occasional typos from lax editing, but when he gets to describing the major British and French offensives with large numbers of tanks in WWI, suddenly the German units defending against them are all Jaeger units (light infantry, originally with extra machine guns, used to augment cavalry formations to form a corps' advance guard early in the war). Every regiment and division mentioned is Jaegers. This really had me scratching my head, because there were only three German divisions in WWI that were composed of Jaeger regiments (Alpenkorps, Jaeger Division, and 200th Division), and none of these were present. It finally dawned on me what the problem must be: some older German printing and writing styles still popular in the 1930s (and later) had very similar "I" and "J" (not that odd: "J" and "Y" are modified forms of old Latin "I"). Someone must be have been looking at abbreviations for Infantrie Regiment (IR) and Infantrie Division (ID) at some point and mistaken them for JR and JD. Some translator should have his bippy slapped for this one. Anyone engaged to translate this work should have known better.

The technical memoirs of a superb military mind. He called the result Blitzkrieg; we call it, today, combined arms operations. This is a work by a German professional soldier, a product of the German General Staff, and a superb field commander. Had Hitler not intervened and ordered a stand down for three days, it is likely that Guderian and von Rundstedt would have captured the entire British army at Dunkirk. This result by the application of Guderian's theories on combined operations and the role of armor (tanks) in modern warfare.If you are a fan of military history and want a better understanding of the changes in warfare wrought in WW II, this is a book for you.

Very interesting book from the father of Mechanized warfare.He drew much from the British and French Tank use during WW1, he synthesized all of their Tank theories, added some revolutionaryideas of his own and shocked the world at the time with a new kind of warfare. This book is very enlightening, the common story is that the French folded easily when Germany invaded, but thetruth is that nobody was ready for what Guderian was about to unleash. No country would have survived theBlitzkrieg then, not even the US. He created something revolutionary and nobody was ready for it.This book also pointed out that Guderian was about to take the British Exp. at Dunkirk, but Hitler gave theorder to halt, allowing the British to evacuate thousands of troops and saving a massive allied disaster.The book does start off a little slow as one reader below pointed out, but overall its an amazing book by aman who seems to overlooked in History for some reason. Any fan of WW2 history will love this book.
