A serious application of current macro economic theory to modern realities of international trade and economic development. This is an update and amplification of Ricardo's thoughts on comparative advantage. Maybe not a perfect explanation for everything going in world wide economic developments but a very logical and comprehensive presentation.

In principle globalization is very straightforward, but government and people still think of it as nothing new had emerged in the globe. Baldwin presents a new view about globalization; the three cascade. The three big constraint between production and consumption: constraint to mobility of (i) things (goods and services); (ii) ideas and (iii) people. He reviews it in a millennia perspective, so as to view globalization as a moment in a long journey of humanity, so the analysis goes back to agriculture, to 12 thousands years BCE. The erudition is impressive and the writing is well structured. It flows easily, with lot of data with several Figures that illustrate the changing world. I specially liked the comparison between the old globalization (XIX Centruy), and the new one (Since 1990), and how he explains the latter based on the notion of production network, with its implication on the notion of comparative advantages. The book is a must-read for trade economist and non-expert interested in the subject

The great convergence details the evolution of globalization through human history and in particular the differences between different eras of globalization. The author gives a narrative on the order of human history of how the step from production to consumption has evolved and how each era of globalization has been driven by different factors and how those differences led to different production techniques. The history is interesting but the framing of the latest stage of globalization is what is worth reading more than anything.The book is split into 4 parts. The author begins by giving the history of transformation of human labor into consumption. The author gives an intuitive overview of how self-sufficiency and subsistence living turned into agriculture and specialization. The author discusses how transportation of goods was very costly so trade was minimal despite the growth of cities which facilitated local exchange of specialization. The author then notes how steam and coal led to the decline of transportation costs which was the first major unbundling of production from consumption as production + transportation still led to large efficiency gains and comparative advantage drove development. The most recent stage of globalization the author highlights has been where stages of production have been separated and how supply chains taking advantage of specific comparative advantage has become more pronounced. This last part is the focus of the book.The author moves to discuss the ideas set out in the first part with more depth in particular he focuses on how early stage globalization led to an industrializing "north" against a less capital intensive "south". The author focuses on the conflict between agglomeration benefits and the cost inflation that it creates. The North refers to Europe and North America and the South pretty much everything else. Despite cheaper labor in the south the comparative advantage of a industrialized country final good with ownership of the whole supply change produced cheaper goods net of transportation costs than the South with cheaper labor inputs. As a consequence the industrializing north had the positive feedback of further investment which led to further development and improvement in cost structure as productivity growth was faster than wage growth. The second unbundling which is what we are currently witnessing is far more dynamic and a partial reversal of the first unbundling. As the cost of interaction over space has declined it has allowed for the increasing subcontracting out of parts of the production process. The author discusses how this has been enabled by improvements in trade global governance structures and agreements surrounding property rights and recourse through the courts. The result of the decline in transaction costs of using a supply chain versus relying locally on the whole production process has been revolutionary for global trade. The offshoring of production has enabled the use of cheap labor and elevated intellectual property to drive the most recent leg of globalization which has led to the offshoring of jobs.The author goes through cases of how production know how has been exported to where labor cost advantage is extreme. The examples include Mexico and China. On the other side of this has been the growth of service exports from the "North". The author spends time on policy as well and highlights the difficulties in trying to onshore labor given the global competitive landscape. Many of the examples are framed as situations where the corporate had no choice but to improve cost structure or lose business. As the impact of offshoring of labor is hitting the lower skilled labor pool, the need for safety nets is of great importance as is the need to continue to focus on where comparative advantage exists to drive productivity growth. This area is the trickiest but the author gives some good ideas on what to think about.The great convergence is a good overview of how globalization has enabled the separating of location and time of production and consumption. It gives a human history of this decoupling to give the full context of today versus the past and it is done intuitively. How we deal with the frictions associated with globalization is a fierce topic right now and unlikely to be resolved anytime soon. Despite the social unrest associated with it, the dynamics as to why globalization is occurring and how offshoring has been enabled by the technological world we live in imply the need to rethink policy in an educated fashion is paramount. The A-10 has had such a huge cult following that I'm rather surprised it took this long for Haynes to publish a book devoted to it. I've enjoyed Steve Davies other Haynes books and have always had a bit of a "soft spot" for this mean, ugly beast of a plane. The result is a fairly solid reference book that's let down somewhat by the limitations of the Haynes format.If you've owned any of Haynes other modern combat aircraft manuals, you know what to expect. There are introductory chapters describing the plane's design and development, the different variants, operators (mostly a list of squadrons), and a brief overview of the A-10 at war. The second half of the book is more technical in tone, with chapters on the aircraft's anatomy (flight control, hydraulic systems, landing gear, etc.), the TF34 engines, and weapons and sensors. We get a chapter on flying the A-10 over Kosovo in the FAC role in 1999, written largely by Col. Phil Haun, and a brief chapter on maintaining the aircraft. Finally, there are a couple of appendixes, including a complete list of production numbers. The text is accompanied by a large number of excellent color photographs, which should prove useful to anyone super-detailing their model, along with technical diagrams from the original manuals.Although this is yet another enjoyable "workshop manual," I'm starting to feel the novelty of the Haynes format is finally starting to wear off. I've followed the series for years, and I've noticed that many of the recent books have been rather cold and slickly produced. Considering how durable, (relatively) cheap to operate, and rough-and-tumble the A-10 is, you'd think there'd be a more about maintaining the aircraft than a few pages near the end. Even the famous GAU-8 Avenger only receives a couple pages here. I don't want to suggest this book is bad (it's actually fine the way it is), but I wish Haynes would start including a download code with their books so readers can access material that had to be edited out for reasons of space.Although it's obviously dated now, A-10 Thunderbolt II (Modern fighting aircraft), later incorporated into The Great Book Of Modern Warplanes, provides a more well-rounded insight into the early model A-10s, its weapons and avionics, and the tactics they would have used against Soviet armor. This book focuses largely on the 'C' model and is a fine update as such, but it's a little too slick and polished for a book on the A-10.

I've watched this plane fly over most of my adult life. I remember watching the guys practice over Ft. Leonard Wood while I was in basic training. The book is really great. I just wish it had pictures of the 2 seat model that they built. Also they include an Appendix of Production numbers but that could have been augmented with disposition (like listing ones that had been modified or were on display or ones that were written off. I look forward to getting the rest of this series. (Next one is SR-71).

Nothing is better than the A-10. Since I can't have an A-10, this is the next best thing. 3rd best is maybe getting a model.

This pocket guide helped me get a job! Really! I needed a book to review Linux commands, so I purchased this to read on the plane. Sure, I've been a Unix / Linux Engineer for 20 years and have done coding, but wanted a quick refresh of commands. While flying to the job interview, I quickly read through this guide. (Well, I made it halfway through in 4 hours). The only 2 Linux questions asked on my interview were things I had forgotten over the years but quickly remembered when reading this book - how to use "chattr" and the obscure run-levels.Great book to have for a quick review! More easily read than man pages, just as in-depth, and commands are grouped in a logical manner.

I work in IT primarily with Microsoft systems. However, in todays interconnected computer infrastructure Linux is a reality and sometimes I find myself confronted with a Linux command line. This book is such a help, with remembering the proper syntax or command that is needed. It is just the right size so it really does fit in your pocket, because in a world where computers are everywhere, sometimes it isn't easy, possible, or even practical to 'look the answer up online.'If you like me sometimes need an accurate, concise, and relatively comprehensive Linux reference, this is a lifesaver.

This book won't teach you everything, I think it just scratches the surface of what linux can do.But if you just need a quick cheat sheet or want to use linux more, buy it.

A great "quick reference" for many essential Linux commands, including common tools and utilities. I am slowly but surely switching over from Windows to Linux, and this is a handy guide that I keep right next to the computer. This guide doesn't tell you everything (which would require a set of encyclopedias!), but it is organized and indexed well enough to steer you in the right direction. If you need full information about a command, you can always reference the "man pages" on the computer, but they often provide too much information to browse through quickly - hence this guide.

Clear, concise and straightforward about what you get and what you don’t. What you get is a great reference thst is indispensable if you ever command line around, which you should because it’s clearly more fun then the GUI at the end of the day.I never thought I’d say that but it’s true -- learning the back end has been a rewarding experience.For a guy who in 1984 got the first Mac when I was 12 years old. I’m still obsessed with the idea of Mac paint and how revolutionary it seemed.Now to know what actually happens -- now so many years later - under the hood in even a tiny way, is kind of crazy, and can’t argue .This book is a great pocket guide, with the essential commands, to get you from a to b (or PWD to CD) without knocking out some Sudo function you shouldn’t have messed with anyway.

This is a concise guide to many console commands for the GNU/Linux operating system. While the book doesn't show all available options for every utility it touches upon, it shows the ones most required as well as some extended switches. More importantly, it has examples for many utilities to aid in how to actually use the knowledge. Much of the book also assists in Macintosh administration as well and has pointers to when you should also read the MAN pages in order to get the bigger picture. Great guide.
