Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil, by Hannah Arendt

Amazon.com Review

While living in Argentina in 1960, Nazi leader Adolf Eichmann was kidnapped and smuggled to Israel where he was put on trial for crimes against humanity. The New Yorker magazine sent Hannah Arendt to cover the trial. While covering the technical aspects of the trial, Arendt also explored the wider themes inherent in the trial, such as the nature of justice, the behavior of the Jewish leadership during the Nazi Régime, and, most controversially, the nature of Evil itself. Far from being evil incarnate, as the prosecution painted Eichmann, Arendt maintains that he was an average man, a petty bureaucrat interested only in furthering his career, and the evil he did came from the seductive power of the totalitarian state and an unthinking adherence to the Nazi cause. Indeed, Eichmann's only defense during the trial was "I was just following orders." Arendt's analysis of the seductive nature of evil is a disturbing one. We would like to think that anyone who would perpetrate such horror on the world is different from us, and that such atrocities are rarities in our world. But the history of groups such as the Jews, Kurds, Bosnians, and Native Americans, to name but a few, seems to suggest that such evil is all too commonplace. In revealing Eichmann as the pedestrian little man that he was, Arendt shows us that the veneer of civilization is a thin one indeed.

If, in recalling the period, one could shut one's eyes to the scenes of brutal massacre and stop one's ears to the screams of horror-stricken women and terrorized children as they saw the tornado of death sweeping toward them, one could almost assume that in some parts of the book the author is being whimsical. -- The New York Times Book Review

The Holocaust is an often told story. Hundreds if not thousands of books are written about it. This book, "Eichmann in Jerusalem" has to be the book to read on the subject. The book tells the story of Adolph EIchmann's trial in Jersusalem for crimes committed in the Holocaust during WWII. This is a trial for a person who personally did not kill one Jew. He was a mere Lt. Colonel in a huge bureaucracy, buried deep down in the organizational chart. How can that be? I think the answers in the book chill the average person to the bone. It touches on some subjects out of history that are very dark. It also is frighteningly real for today's world. I know that alone will scare most as well as any haunted house they go through. This book flows very well. The author keeps the flow moving fast from chapter to chapter. She tells you the who on Eichmann, why it was important then in 1963, and goes over the events of the Holocaust. Her information comes straight from the trial transcripts. That adds a new angle to the event, closer to the timeline. I think that adds a lot to the story.Overall the book is a great history of the Holocaust. It will give you facts that you haven't read before. These facts rattled the world then and I think it would now to anyone who reads it.The book explains the whole final solution in intimate detail. It walks you through how it started as mercy killings due to low quality of life to a very large complex state owned machine. The book doesn't fill you will the horrible stories. It gives you the bureaucratic dry explanation on how the system worked. You learned how the elite was very much behind the process. That alone is something few other books offer. Through this line you learn that Eichmann was the person who made the whole system run. He made it run as only a Lt. Colonel buried in the bureaucracy who controlled very little. His office got the trains to put the Jews on. Then he coordinated with the camps to take the Jews. He did not run the camps himself. The Nazis also used the local Jews to make their system run. It was their local government which choose the names and Jews at gunpoint which guided them to the chambers in many camps. Their succession of lies to the Jews about a better tomorrow was a critical fuel that made the system run. Everyone would either trade in their neighbor or hung on in hope of a better tomorrow. German society also bore a piece of the guilt. Whole institutions jumped on board to make things happen.Hannah Arendt also gives you the context from the period. Why the Israeli's conducted trail and the reaction from the world. The process of the trial in a way shaped world attitudes even to today. It brought out the horror of the system out of the shadows to see it was more than a mix of personal stories but it was a state sanctioned machine. I think it explained the system which no one on on the outside understood. There is one thing from the book I know will upset people. The question today is how can people do this? Why would people do this. The book explains who Eichmann was. He started as a private in the SS. He was an average worker in Germany before that; a salesman. He moved up the SS chain quickly through hard work and taking full advantage of opportunities as they came. He probably would have moved to the top of any bureaucracy, Walmart, Exon, Ford, as he did with the SS. The only difference was then the mission was the Holocaust vs. selling odds and ends at Walmart. His story shows the importance of morals vs. just a good job. He was just a career climber in the business of the day. You can see how this principle of career success alone, outside of morals turns people into monsters. That element alone is what people can see happening tomorrow but won't admit it. That do that because they fear they too might do the same thing to advance or know someone who will. This book

At one level, this book is a report on the trial of Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem in which is considered the competency of the court to try Eichmann, the appropriateness of the law, the legality of Eichmann’s kidnapping in Argentina, the fairness of the trail, the adequacy of the defense, the tactics of the prosecution, the conduct of judges etc. Nor, as stated by Hannah Arendt herself in the postscript, is this book intended to be about the greatest disaster in the history of the Jewish people, the nature of the Third Reich, a history of German people, a theoretical account of totalitarianism nor a philosophical treatise into the nature of evil. Having said this, there are still important insights into the human condition and the nature of human laws and human judgement in the course of shaping that condition. At another level, this book is the most important non-fiction existentialist work of the era dealing with the issues of conformist culture, technological control, and faceless mindless compliance. I have tried to provide here a narrative summary of these insights as I understand them.Hannah Arendt explains how Himmler was able to twist the logic of morality to assuage the conscious of his handpicked, academically degreed, leaders. The commanders of the Einsatzgruppen were among the intellectual elite of the SS. What this says about the ability of the academically degreed to see through the sophistry, to the evil, is not discussed. It would seem that advanced education stripped them of ethical restraint rather than equip them with ethical constraint. Atrocities were committed by Nazis who were sophisticated readers of Goethe and Hegel attendees at Mozart and Beethoven concerts. So much for art and education being the path to moral excellence. In any case, Hannah Arendt points out that, for the most part, the members of the SS and the Einsatzgruppen, were not murders or sadist by nature. I guess that there were just not enough murderers or sadists around to perpetuate such monstrous evils on so gigantic a scale. There was actually a systematic effort to weed out the psychopaths under the understanding that soldiers are not killers and killers do not make good soldiers. This being the case, Himmler’s problem was how to overcome the ordinary human feeling of pity that a normal person feels in the presence of physical suffering. Himmler was able to turn this normal instinctual feeling around. Instead of saying to oneself “What horrible things I did to people!” his men came to instead instantiate the perspective, “What horrible things I had to watch in the pursuance of my duties, how heavily the task weights upon my shoulders.” That is, pity for the suffering is turned into self-pity, egoism in its most basic and vain form, the failure to put suffering into proper perspective against the greater setting of human history and the cold striking tragedies of the world. The SS men were now the victims for having to witness this suffering in the performance of their sacred duties. From here it was but a small step to hate the Jews for thrusting this unwanted and distasteful work upon upright and just men of duty. The SS men were thus able to stay convinced of their own civilized nature, there was no decent into barbarism under this formulation. What could be more twisted? Basically, its takes an ideology (religion is just a special case of ideology) to get otherwise good people to to do bad things. They just need to be convinced that their evils acts are being done for a greater good and that they are ethical heroes in being able to sacrifice their ethics in the pursuit of higher good.If I may be permitted to draw on another text, I would like to point out another piece of Nazi legerdemain that aided in making barbarism and mass murder possible. This was done by transforming genocide into nothing of the sort in the belief system of the perpetrators. This I found in another great classic work of twentieth-century philosophy, ‘The Ethics of Ambiguity’ by Simon de Beauvior. In it, de Beuavoir describes how “…the Nazis were systematically relentless in casting into abjection the men they wanted to destroy” Through relentless ill treatment and brainwashing, the victims came to regard themselves with such disgust that it silenced the voice of protest and revolt which further reinforced the Nazi’s in their twisted belief that these people were really not full human beings because they lacked dominion over themselves. de Beauvior states “All oppressive regimes become stronger through the degradation of the oppressed.” The more miserable were the Jews, the more contemptible they became in the eyes of the Nazis. They were to be blamed for their own contemptibility; there was thus no longer any room for remorse or regret. In the belief of the Nazi’s, these beings were no longer human beings because they did not have dominion over themselves. They were not worthy of empathy.Hannah Arendt explains that this logic was important for Eichmann because at all times Eichmann was doing his duty in accordance with the law and in doing so he was fulfilling his moral duty while satisfying his psychological need for authority. Eichmann even manages to twist Kantian moral philosophy and deontological ethics to justify his actions and assuage his conscience. Eichmann was narrow minded enough to take his job seriously and avoid the temptation of interpreting, amending, or exceeding his orders. To do so would have been unlawful and Eichmann, so as never to be found acting criminally, always acted in accordance with the law - never understanding that the regime pronouncing the law was itself criminal. Eichmann found himself in a contorted world where orders that were contrary to those issued by the criminal regime were considered to be criminal; a world of legal crimes. Eichmann was unable to recognize the self-canceling nature of criminal laws enacted by a criminal state and make moral judgments for himself. It is in just these sorts of cases where human judgment is paramount; when there are no longer any rules or principles of society or cultural values by which to guide one’s judgment. This is when judgment is at its most risky and thus when it is most valuable to us as humans. The judgment of the individual in such circumstances, relying only upon the voice of inner conscious and felt reality of human fidelity, becomes the only safeguard against crimes against humanity. To exercise judgement under conditions of uncertainty is just what it means to be human. Where does this ability to judge based on inner conscious in the face of contrary cultural value and societal rules come from? Apparently, not from education alone given the actions of the Einsatzgruppen. When is the exercise of independent judgment justified and on what basis can it be made? This is the fundamental philosophical question of ethics as pointed out by Hannah Arendt. Most often, the soundness of our individual judgments is found in how well these judgments match up to the rules and expectations of society and the prevailing cultural values. This is how we know that our judgments are ‘correct’. Even today, we often mistake social conditioning for ethics. Acting against these guidelines in making a judgement is the risk we take, this is the risk that just is the human condition. However, on her own account, (The Origins of Totalitarianism), totalitarianism was a new and unrepresented form of government that came into existence in the twentieth century and was a massive intrusion of criminal violence into the realm of politics (On Violence). Further, and again on her own account, how could Eichmann be expected to see his way clear? In (On Violence), Hannah Arendt adds bureaucracy to totalitarianism as one of the latest innovations in twentieth century politics. Bureaucracy is the rule of an intricate system of institutions in which no one, neither the best, nor the few, nor the many can be held responsible, it is effective rule by ‘Nobody’. Rule by ‘Nobody’ is the most tyrannical of all since there is no one left to answer for what is being done. Eichmann was a part of state that was an admixture of two unprecedented modes of political rule. We must be honest and ask, how many of us today in the same position as Eichmann would act in the same way and fail to exercise human judgment and make a truly independent moral decision in a set of unprecedented cultural and social challenges such as those presented by totalitarianism? It is in just such an unprecedented environment that consequences of action cannot be foreseen. This is the terrifying reality and banality of evil that we must recognize in ourselves. We must face the reality that Eichmann can be ‘Every-man’ (Eichmann as Every-man is a conclusion the Hannah Arendt repudiates in the postscript because this would cast Eichmann as a scapegoat and absolve him of personal guilt and this cannot be the case because he is still guilty of not thinking and not making independent moral judgments). However, I believe that admission of this deep defect in the human condition is the only way to guard against its insidious ability to overtake any of us. Not making this admission is an open invitation to the banality of evil. After all, what are we to make of Martian Heidegger, a philosopher and eminent thinker of prodigious education, intimately known to Hannah Arendt, who flirted with, collaborated with, and joined the Nazi Party? Thinking itself is not a guarantee of good judgment and again education does not guarantee the path to moral excellence. In Eichmann’s mind, he was also the victim of a corrupt system, something that he could only see after the fact. Hannah Arendt, with sardonic wit, points out how, in this morally inverted world of the Third Reich, that the temptations to be resisted were the temptations not to murder and not to exploit and that too many Germans learned how to resist temptation. The key to this strategy is in exploiting the ability of the human being to rationalize and hence, the banality, or should we say, the rationality of evil. Owing to cultural failure and thus the inability for cultural values to serve as a standard for individual judgements, any evil can be justified and I believe this is Hannah Arendt’s most unsettling insight into the human condition. In the case of the Third Reich, rationalization was based on the ordinariness of death, the exigencies of war, and the demands as well as the expectations of a perverted social construct. Individual judgments were now matched up to these conditions to determine the correctness of the judgments and to determine right from wrong, good from evil. In this case, when human judgment is paramount but when there are no longer any rules or principles of society or cultural values by which to guide one’s judgment, how is human judgment possible? How readily can we expect one to think originally and judge independently in a set of never before encountered social and cultural rules with no precedent as represented by totalitarianism? On what criteria is one to make such independent judgments when one is part of an unprecedented set of circumstances? Again, on her own account, (The Human Condition), human action becomes more difficult as the bigness of society increases. Action collapses into administration. The bigness of the society crowds out the realm of, and opportunity for, individual action. We thus become administrators, not actors, in the governmental and business bureaucratic machinery that the bigness of society compels. Hannah Arendt does not provide us with a formula for, or guaranteed way in which to make, the human judgments that are required to be made in unprecedented conditions; when there are no authentic social or cultural norms to guide our judgement. There is no sure path to independent individual human action when we are smothered by the imperatives of administrative necessity. There are no for sure guarantees in these unexplored territories and there were none for Eichmann as well. Hanna Ardent gives us no such formula for judgment or path to action because there is none to be had, this is the precarious position of the human condition. Hannah Arendt, I believe, tells us that what is in-between wisdom and ignorance is that rarefied quality of a kind called human judgement and that this is all that we have. This judgement, once made, further compels action. Arendt further indites Eichmann for his failure to act. "Arendt's theory of action and her revival of the ancient [Greek] notion of praxis represent one of the most original contributions to twentieth century political thought. ... Moreover, by viewing action as a mode of human togetherness, Arendt is able to develop a conception of participatory democracy which stands in direct contrast to the bureaucratized and elitist forms of politics so characteristic of the modern epoch." (d'Entreves, Maurizio Passerin (2006), "Hannah Arendt", Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Most unsettling, Hannah Arendt also points out that the machinery mass genocidal murder was not possible without the cooperation of Jewish leaders themselves; Eichmann’s SS deportation transport trains to the death camps were filled with people from the lists drawn up by the Jewish ‘helpers’. It seems that the complete moral collapse and banality of evil was not the sole domain of the Nazis. Although Hannah Ardent was later sorry that she coined the phrase “banality of evil” (p. xviii of the Introduction by Amos Elton) I believe that the phrase still has great currency and aptly captures her unsettling insight into the human condition. Genocide and mass murder just is a permanent potential in the human condition, it can happen again and it actually has happened again since WWII on more than one occasion. I am glad the she coined the phrase and even feel that we should up the stakes and call it the terrifying banality of evil. What better phrase is there to understand what was for Eichmann a job, just a daily routine and literally the brutal and barbaric death for the people with whom he dealt in course of his bureaucratic job? Eichmann was indeed terrifyingly normal as Arendt points out.A general challenge of the human condition is that we are instinctively conformist, rule making and rule following creatures. It would seem that this capacity is a genetic disposition, a cognitive rigidity, the dark side of which we see played out here. However, normative rule following behavior allows us to build lasting cultural institutions and promotes social cooperation. The object of that social cooperation and institution building is of course the sine quo non. Human collective action is neither virtue nor vice, it is the object of the collective action that must be addressed. The problem with justice, so called, is that it is backward looking and retributive. In any case, it is not available to us, only the law is available to us in governing the human condition. If we can realize the “banality of evil” perhaps we can work toward and someday come to realize the banality of goodness.

Eichmann in Jerusalem, Hannah Arendt, 298 pages. Everyone should read a book about Hitler’s Final Solution every ten years or so, just to get re-grounded in the terrible possibilities of being human. Arendt’s reportage of the post-Nuremburg trial of Adolf Eichmann certainly offers such re-grounding. She chillingly moves through the steps that Germany took—often in counter-productivity to its own war effort—to cleanse Europe of Jewry: first, deportation; second, concentration; thirdly, extermination. In many places, this is a report to skim, especially as Arendt discusses the legality of the entire trial in Israel. In many places, this is a report to follow closely, as when Arendt goes through each country’s specific response to the demands of Nazi Germany. (Alas, only one country, Denmark, effectively denied Nazi demands for killing its Jewish citizens.) Arendt’s final three chapters are marvelous—if such and adjective can be used to describe Eichmann and what went on. Her summation of his trial and execution read thus: “in those last minutes . . . the lesson that this long course in human wickedness had taught us—[was] the lesson of the fearsome, word-and-thought defying banality of evil.” I think that the word “sociopath” was not available to Arendt; she seems to alternately see Eichmann as a buffoon, as a banal, self-promoting civil-servant, and as someone willingly self-deluded. Perhaps all of those are involved in some degrees in the diagnosis of sociopath. And, I suppose, sociopaths are banal in that they are one-dimensional and lacking in imagination, a requirement of empathy.

I've recently started an alterations business and bought this to add to my reference library. It's a solid introduction to bridal wear but it is only an introduction. There are lots of good drawings and explanations. I intend to get the author's other books as time goes on. I haven't had any bridal wear yet but at least with this book I have an idea where to start.

The book was delivered well before promised and in great condition. I have already started reading the material in the book. It is very informative and easy to read. Good information for someone looking to do this as a business of their own.

Had good info, but I really wish there had been more pics that showed the alterations. Pics would have been a nice "quick reference" tool, especially when in the middle of an alteration @ needing a quick confirmation of a procedure.

Bought this & the groom book to do with my fiance' over Christmas weekend, I took a sneak peek, questions look decent, pages are pretty to look at. About 100 questions, will be a fun thing to do over a weekend before toy building and battery forgetting :)

Fun - a lot to go through though, take it a few questions at a time.I got this for my wedding and I bought it for a bridal shower as well.Be wary of who the recipient is, if they are sensitive they might think you are suggesting they don't know their intended well enough. Happened to me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Purchased both bride & groom to do with my newly fiance' :) adorable , fun, relaxing! Pretty pages & 100 or so questionsSome conversation starting questions that you may never otherwise have had!

I needed to spend a few more dollars to get free shipping, so I ended up with this book. First of all, don't bother getting this and the groom book. Aside from a handful of questions, almost everything is interchangeable.I'll give credit where it is due though. I have known my partner for a decade and we came across a lot of new territory we'd never discussed. The good news is we guessed each others answers correctly!

Come exactly as described it’s a perfect bridal shower gift. I purchased this for myself and loved it so much I bought it for someone else. Definitely a good gift idea.

Great products! Arrived on time, and exactly as advertised. My sister and her fiance enjoyed doing these quizzes before their wedding :)

We had a blast going through these questions for our 4th anniversary. Fun to use as a game!

The Night of the Triffids, by Simon Clark

From Publishers Weekly

In John Wyndham's The Day of the Triffids (1951), mankind is overtaken-and much of it blinded-by the demonic walking plant of the title, a monster created in a lab in an act of Cold War profiteering. Clark (Vampyrrhic, etc.) picks up the story more than 25 years later, puts a new narrator at the helm and spins a brisk and engaging adventure-cum-horror yarn. Clark's narrator is David Masen, son of scientist Bill Masen (the protagonist from Wyndham's book). The Masen family, along with a handful of other survivors, has set up an outpost on the Isle of Wight, and have gone about rebuilding society. A major part of this renewal involves a particularly bizarre idea called the Mother House, a convent-like home where women spend their lives giving birth over and over again. All seems well, until one morning when the sun doesn't rise and the triffids, long thought condemned to the mainland, attack. Clearly marketed as a genre horror title, this crafty continuation is elegant in its construction. Clark's prose is clean, thoughtful and perfectly suited to his faux doomsday-memoir approach. Less cautionary than the original, but more literary than many books of its ilk, this is a truly enjoyable voyage.Awards-one for The Night of the Triffids and one for the short story "Goblin City Lights."Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

A quarter of a century after an invasion by the deadly alien plants known as triffids blinded most of the world's human population and caused the collapse of civilization, only a small colony of survivors on the Isle of Wight continues to preserve what they can of society and culture. When a new phenomenon arises, resulting in the darkening of the atmosphere, pilot David Masen, the son of the colony's founder, sets out to discover the source of the problem-and encounters a new group of technologically advanced survivors from across the Atlantic. Continuing the classic tale of alien invasion begun 25 years ago in John Wyndham's The Day of the Triffids, Clark envisions a world poised to fight back against their invaders. Winner of the 2002 British Fantasy Award for Best Novel, he retains a feel for sf pulp horror in an action-filled tale that captures the spirit of the original story. Recommended for most sf collections. Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I was surprised to find this modern sequel to my all time favorite classic SF novel, The Day of the Triffids. Clark has done a commendable job continuing the battle of man against man, man against triffid, and man against oppressive ideology that Wyndham mastered in his original classic. The characters are engaging and the voice of the author reminds me of Wyndham with his first person narrative, straightforward description of these apocryphal events. Only one event in this book hit me as too fanciful - and without being a total spoiler I will simply say that it is one of the evolutionary presentations of the triffid towards the end that stretched the limits. I especially liked the use of new and old characters in this book. I give 5 stars for this really excellent and highly readable sequel.

It was thirty years ago that I first read my favourite book "The Day of the Triffids". I discovered Simon Clark's sequel a few days ago and the only disappointing thing is that I didn't discover it years ago. It's a pacy extension of the world that Wyndham created in the early fifties. Stylistically it's very similar to Wyndam's book, the story is carried off at a good pace, I was drawn in from the beginning and was instantly back in the world where walking plants attack people and politics make things even more complicated.I recommend this to any fan of John Wyndam

Having watched the original 1950's movie, bought the original book which was A LOT different. But back then you had standards on what could/ couldn't be shown unlike today. Then saw the tv series which is great. Thought I'd give this book a try as it takes place 20 some years after everything started with the Triffids. There are some things in the book I don't understand why the author has them in it and simply don't make sense. But won't say what they are because I don't want to spoil it for the reader. I'm glad I bought it and the time it took to read, but it's not a keeper for me. That is, to re-read again.

Enjoyable, but not nearly as enjoyable as the original. There were some continuity issues, the female characters were fairly one-dimensional, especially compared to TDOTT which had charismatic and complex character Josella front and center. The author painted a vivid and remarkably authentic picture of the Triffids and there were plenty of interesting twists and turns, but on the whole the prose felt somewhat heavy-handed. Overall, it felt more like a sci-fi action story rather than sci-fi thriller. Note: My comments are based on comparing this work to Wyndham's, which I acknowledge is an incredibly high standard. While there are many aspects of this book that were very well done, I was disappointed that the sequel did not retain more of the original finesse and flavor.

This book is the follow up to the original, Day of the Triffids novel by John Wyndham. It follows the adventures of his son David and unusual phenomena, as well as a continuation of the Triffid story. While not quite the page turner the first novel was, this is still a thrilling novel. The tone is similar to the first book and there are a number of twists and turns that incorporates fighting the Triffid menace, a formidable adversary from the first novel and social justice. The ending was unexpected and some other reviewers didn't care for it. I think it fits the non violence civil rights era of the sixties, coming later after the catastrophe. It is interesting that this book does not solve the Triffid menace. I hope there is a follow-up that finally kills the invasive, deadly plants! Still a great novel. I do love the author's ability to involve the reader from the first few pages.

Not quite Wyndham, but well done. Clark does a good job of capturing Wyndham's voice, perhaps not quite as good at plotting, but I found it enjoyable. The Day of the Triffids remains one of my all-time favorite books, so I hesitated a bit over this, but it's a good, if not great (ending a bit too pat) sequel. If you loved Wyndham's novel, this one is worth your time.

The Triffids definitely requires you to suspend belief for full enjoyment... carnivorous plants rule the world?Wyndham wove a superb tale in the Day of The Triffids and Simon Clark does a surprisingly good job of continuing the tale in his book.By taking the story across the pond to America, Clark is able to let his own imagination run riot and create his own human reactions to the global disaster and for the most part it works completely. For me there were a few stumbles along the way.. just one example being the super speed development of a Triffid which can breathe underwater (Doesn't natural selection take hundreds or thousands of years to effect that kind of change?).But don't let that dissuade you from giving this book a chance. If you enjoyed Wyndham's Triffids, the chances are you will enjoy Clark's efforts too. He could even continue on and write a third Triffids book, if he writes it, I'll read it.

Over 40 years ago, I read the original (and GREAT) "Triffids" book. The "Blinding" scared me so much that I didn't look at a meteor shower until only recently! Many times, in my youth, I looked for the "suggested" continuation of the original novel. I didn't know that the book had not yet been written.Last week, on a whim, I checked if my "imagined" book could be found on Amazon.Sure enough, they had what I wanted!I finished the novel a few hours ago and I was NOT disappointed. The story was as exciting as I remember the original to be!I only hope for two things:1) That there will be another sequel and/or a TV Series (Like "V").2) That there will be a movie version (which, I hope, will be better than the 1st one).If you like Science Fiction, then "Night of the Triffids" is a MUST READ!!!!!!!!!

I bought this for my 80 year old aunt who has dementia and will occasionally drop a big old cuss word. Keeping her coloring and laughing helps her so much. So I thought this was perfect. She LOVES it. I haven’t seen her laugh as much as she did while reading the words. What a riot. She wanted to color them all immediately and hand them to all the people she knows that the word describes. She has really broadened her vocabulary, and better yet insists we call her Ms. Sugartits.

This book is a rather big let down frankly it looks like they superimposed giant curse words over photocopies of other adult coloring book pages. The greater bulk of the pages are extremely blurry and almost every picture is way off center so it looks incomplete and just really seems like someone photocopied the entire thing. Very shoddy.

I was really excited to get this, but disappointed when I opened it and looked at all the pictures. It's just pretty designs with swear words dropped on top of them -- seriously lazy way to design. They probably just took another book they had already designed with pretty flowers and stuff and then said, "Hey, let's drop some dirty words on these and sell the book again!" I should have looked closer before buying. Also, the designs are somewhat pixelated and not printed well, like someone took low-res images off the internet. I could have done the same thing and then just put them in Illustrator and typed words over them. That's basically what was done here. Also, even though they are only printed on one side, markers will seep through these pages so put something under them or tear them out if you are going to color them.Save your money and get a book that was actually designed with the words as the focus, not an afterthought. I'm really sad because I bought this as a gift and wanted it to be nicer. She'll still laugh at it, but I was hoping for something better. And since it's not technically defective, it would cost more than the product to send it back. Oh well, live and @#$%#$%& learn.

Great selection of cursewords and designs. Love the blackout pages! Only complaints are the pages bleed pretty bad and they aren’t serrated for easy removal from the book so you will need to use a thick enough blotter page when using markers or you’ll need to use scissors to cut the page out of the book if using markers and no blotter page as your work will bleed through onto the mext picture if you don’t. All in all, I’m satisfied with this purchase and I also bought a copy for my girlfriend who laughed her @$$ off when she received it! Well worth the price and shipping was fast too!

It's a fun coloring book, but the background mandala images are HORRIBLE quality. Seems like a stupid thing to complain about, but it literally hurts my eyes when I'm trying to color in the lines. It's like the creator grabbed images off from google and stretched them as big as they could go. Again, fun coloring book, but I would recommend trying another seller.

I love the book, but unfortunately there are 6 pages ripped out of it even before I was able to use it. I am really upset with this product. I was really looking forward to this book and now I'm just really angry that this is the way I received my book. I decided just to go out and purchase one so I knew I was getting the right quality that I paid for. I really haven't had this issue before with amazon's shipping. I have 1 more package coming in and I hope the next package isnt the same.

This book may contain 50 coloring pages, but it uses the same background designs over and over. Sometimes it enlarges them or places them differently on the page. The quality is also not consistent throughout the book - sometimes the pages just look like poor copies or bad/pixelated enlargements. I would not recommend this book to others.

I received this book/ a similar one 2 years ago, and decided to buy another for a secret Santa gift this year. The new one I received is printed kind of blurry, and almost like the ink was running out in spots. They clearly just ripped of low quality images and slapped a font on top.The words print find, but the designs are low quality. I’m not sure if they would look better colored in.

I found this book worthwhile, but not what I would call 'the perfect solution". I am over 70 and have spent my life living frugally, continually saving and investing for the future and retirement. I have been quite successful at growing net worth, while living comfortably. I truly believe a key component is learning who you are and understanding how you are best suited to reach your goals. I personally think this book is too caught up in looking at every penny. I think each penny is important, but have focused on being sure there is constant savings. I don't expect my approach to work for everyone, but I want to emphasize that there can be many paths to reach the same goals. I suggest reading a wide variety of approaches that focus on saving and investing for the long haul. I have made small changes along the way when trying new things. In the end I have found that success came with simplicity. Look for the big picture in the book and any other. Growing wealth is like growing a big tree, strong trees grow big over a long time.

Basic principles of this book are decent, however, the principles are not gold and it could be summed up well in 50 pages or less...not the redundant, ranting 300 page book it is.First 80 pages of the book are worthless and torture mostly focusing on the consumerism/doomed/horrible smog-infested society we live in, last two chapters most useful and can be read in a bookstore.I did not like many examples given; it seemed to focus on divorce excessively with ~ 80% of case report examples of "FI-ers" being divorced which I found rather odd and unnecessary to mention.Take home points of this book: Spend less than you earn, save, document every penny you spend, become a minimalist and only purchase things you need, the less you need the more fulfilled you will be, the less you will work, etc.Things to consider:1) The "FIer" lifestyle is not for everyone- I equate an "FIer" to the tiny home movement in principle.2) Book recommends that bonds should be the mainstay and the only thing in your portfolio. I strongly would discourage this. "Safe" bonds which I pretty much consider anything that that is not a junk bond or preferred stock bond, are not hitting the high yields that Joe Dominguez saw in his day and on many years aren't comparing to rises in inflation. While you can never predict the stock market, when looking at time tables- it always goes up. Traditionally, stock markets rise while bond yields go down some and visa versa. The best way for security and safety is proper allocation to each of these modalities: bonds (treasury bonds are great as mentioned in the book because you aren't charged state taxes, however, what the book fails to remind you of is that federal taxes are still fair game) and diversified stock portfolio most safely done by investing in mutual index funds with low fees (e.g. Vanguard). The older you are, for safety, the more bonds you should have in case the stock market plummets during your retirement years. For conservatives a 60% mutual funds and 40% bonds is recommended. For a retirement person, 20% stocks and 80% bonds should be considered. When you have all your eggs in one basket, you lose that safety net.3) Other things I disagree with in this book- everyone should have health insurance, you should not forgo this to "save" money; sure buy the less comprehensive plan if you are healthy and pay less and have a higher deductible but you are gambling when you forgo it all together.4) They also suggest in this book "rolling-over" your 401k and 403b accounts to bonds; however, these are pre-taxed dollars and you will likely get slammed- most retirement plans now give options to the "risk" or rather stock/bond ratio you desire. I would more likely suggest rolling money to Roth IRAs (post-tax and therefore tax free with capital gains) or just leave your nest egg to compound growth where they are at.Now I am ranting. Cheers.

The first 8 chapters of the book are great, chapter 9 should just be deleted. The original book recommended putting 100% in Treasuries. Since that is clearly a terrible idea now, the book grudgingly recommends index funds. The thing that drives me nuts is the book says that it took 25 years for the stock market to recover from the Great Depression. This is a lie, when you account for dividends and deflation it took 4.5 years to recover if you put a lump sum in at the absolute peak.If you’re going to try and scare people at least be honest. Also if you’re going to pretend that 100% treasuries was a great idea in the 80s at least mention that a 60/40 stock bond blend would have blown it out of the water.

As a Certified Financial Planner professional with over ten years of experience helping clients with retirement planning, I'm sincerely impressed by this book, and have to say that this is a powerful resource for anyone that is seriously interested in becoming Financially Independent (FI). My only feedback is that the book, doesn't emphasize enough, how difficult it is, when you have a spouse or life partner, to change deeply rooted financial money scripts and behaviors. That said, if you (and your life partner) are dedicated to Financial Independence, then this read, is in my professional opinion, a very worthy investment of "life energy" in deed. Good luck on your financial life journey, and may there be many blessings to you and yours! :-)

The content is good, but it is written as if someone just dictated a seminar that lasted a week. It is full of "take Mary for example, she did blah blah blah and blah blah happened" followed by 3 more examples. Yea, I get it. I got it before the example and now I am just annoyed skimming past the examples thinking about the trees that were killed for no reason. Overall, there is some good content in the book, but it could have been cut down 25% easily. After reading the first half of the book I learned to just skip over the examples and skim some of the paragraphs to keep my sanity to make it through to the end

This is the perfect finance book for someone who is now starting out and really for anyone that is trying to get a different perspective on money and how they handle it.However there are some flaws with it number one being that I don’t believe that financial independence or the crossover point as it is called in the book is that easy to maintain once it is reached as several of the examples in the book spoke of people having to readjust their lifestyle when life changed which is something that we all know will happen.Overall however I think tracking your money, seeing your money as your life energy, tracking your income versus expenses for a long period of time and using the three questions to see if you’re getting the best value both emotionally and in line with your values is excellent advice so I would recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their relationship with money.

So many times during this book, I was silently screaming for Macy to stand up for herself, to put people in their place, and to act like the high school senior she was....it took her a LONG time to get there.Nevertheless, this is a sweet story with amazing character development. Recommended!

This book was an absolutely amazing book. I got really into and couldn't put it down. I normally hate reading but there was just something about this book that made me want to keep reading. There are many diverse characters in this book that come together and it all works and flows so well. Macy, Jason, Wes and Delia are the main characters. Pretty much, her father dies so she has to find a way to cope with that. Her boyfriend is away at Brain Camp and he eventually wants to "take a break" from their relationship. She starts working for a catering company and meet this guy, Wes. They don't hit it off right away but she slowly but surely starts to fall for him. They are two great characters that really work well together in the book. It is a great read and you won't be able to out it down because you'll want to keep finding out what happens next.

This maybe be my favorite book. I know how hard it is to lose a loved one. Macy lost so much that day in December. She lost her running partner, best friend, her dad. But that day she also lost herself, stopped running and withdrawing from her friends. She then became a Macy that her fit in better with her mother. A focus Macy, dating a smart guy, getting good grades, not going out and acting out like her sister in the day.But then she meet the gang at WISH and everything changed. That's all I'm going to say because you should just read the book. It well have you crying and laughing but you won't be able to put it down 😃

This is the rare book that brings together the two sides of me: mother and daughter. The mom in me wanted to wrap my arms around the main character and shelter her from all the pain, but the teenager in me understood the bumpy process she needed to go through to figure out who she needed to be. In my humble opinion, Judy Blume is the authority on teenagers and coming of age stories. But, dare I say... Sarah Dessen is this generation's Judy Blume. And I can say that with some authority, since I have a preteen daughter who I know would love this book and I devoured all of Blume's books during my own teenage years.Macy faces all the typical facets of teenagerdom, but all of that seems inconsequential when she witnesses her dad die. To cope, Macy surrounds herself with safety and routine. Unfortunately, safety is keeping her from living, something she's not aware of until Delia and her band of helpers come to cater one of Macy's Mom's parties. Then her "safe" boyfriend, gone for the summer to Brain Camp, sends her an email asking for a cooling off period. How do you cool off something that never had any heat?!Macy joins the catering crew and slowly comes back to life, bringing a damaged Wes, who lost his mother to cancer, on the journey with her. More than anything, I wanted Macy to embrace life and start enjoying youth, but I also wanted Wes to heal and be part of Macy's new life. One of the characters gives this advice in the book: "For any one of us our forever could end in an hour, or ... years from now. You can never know for sure, so you'd better make every second count." Great advice for young and old, and I'd classify this book as making your reading time count! Thanks to Sarah Dessen's excellent story and character development, I can't think of a reader who wouldn't love this book. Okay, maybe male readers who only want action or people who insist a story must have a paranormal angle. And, wait, if you've never been a teenager, you might not understand. All others, get your box of Kleenex, find a comfortable spot to sit, and dive in. You'll be glad you did.

I am absolutely in love with reading! Ever since I was a kid I would always have a book by my side no matter where I was. As you can imagine, I was on end for days waiting for my package to come, which this time, consisted of 5 books. One of them, "The Truth About Forever", by Sarah Dessen, is probably one of my favorite books. This past summer my mom would take me to the library and it was there that I fell in love with Mrs. Dessen. There was something about her style that made me anticipate the ending of every book. "The Truth About Forever" is probably my favorite book by her. Macy kind of reminds me of myself. I'm a pre-planner so I always plan ahead. When something doesn't go exactly how I wanted too, I tend to get mad. But I've learned along the way that sometimes it's good to go with the flow. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is like me and wants to be more like Macy.

This is the first book I've read by this author. Admittedly, it started a little slow. I didn't realize until after purchasing that it was a YA book, and was concerned it might be too simplistic. I was very wrong. Though the two main characters are teenagers, their dialogue is real and raw. Their friendship is based on truth and trust, and their feelings are human on all levels, regardless of age. The book addresses the true struggle with grief, sadness, insecurity and control.

I was hooked from the beginning , which is always a good sign in a book. Macy, the mc, has gone through quite a bit in her young life. As she steps out of her comfort zone and begins to grow , instead of staying stagnant as she had been , you see such a development of her character. It's a beautiful transition as she learns to deal with life and how to handle her emotions. Great book, recommend it.

I first read this book in High School and loved it!!! I've read it at least 5 more times since then. I just bought this for my best friend for Christmas just because of how much I love it. I love most of Sarah Dessen books, I love how real these dark situations can be for girls of this age group (High School) as when I read this one I had recently lost my mom so I felt like I connected to this character.
