This really is a snapshot book. I LOVE Rick Steves' travel books but this one really barely touched on Lisbon. There wasn't even a good metro map. I ended up coming back to buy the Eyewitness Travel Book. He did have snapshot in the title so to be fair, that's pretty much all the book is. Lisbon is not a snapshot city so if you're a first time visitor, buy a more comprehensive book. There's too much history and too many sites for just a skim.
Don't travel without Rick. Any time we go abroad I think I will just use my cell phone to get information, but we inevitable end up mostly using a Rick Steve's book when seeing the sights. Everyone in the group was so impressed with how much I knew about every stop. 15 minutes with Rick on the subway and all of the sudden you are a tour guide!
Worked well for my one day in Lisbon, at least for catching the main sights. I did the three neighborhoods walk and Belem in one day, which was no problem. I didn't find it necessary to take breaks and soak in a lot of the street scenes, so what Rick recommended be done in 3 days, I accomplished in 1. Either way, it was a great guide and handy to have on my phone when I was without internet connection. One recommendation would be for Rick to include a metro map. The metro was fantastic and only cost 6 euro for a 24 hour pass!
Just what I was look for in a tour book for our 4 days in Lisbon. I have used several of his books and also he phone app walking tours in Paris, Amsterdam and London. Good insight on the history of Lisbon and enjoyed is walking tours of the three neighborhoods. We also enjoyed the trip to Sintra but would recommend doing the Pena Palace first, walk the grounds down to the lakes, then take the short walk to the castle. Good info on transportation and areas to eat. Very pleasantly surprised for out first trip to Lisbon. Thanks Steves and company.
The Snapshot book is just the relevant pages pulled out of the larger Portugal guide, but it was just what I wanted and is compact, so...it wins. Of course I wouldn't mind at all if RS would do one of his pocket guides for Lisbon, as he has done for Barcelona - even better format, more colorful, etc.
The Snapshot Lisbon is a good ... it is a great idea to pull the meaty city bits out of the Rick Steves book on Portugal. However, the snapshot book should be less expensive ... especially the Kindle version. In fact, I think Rick should offer a free Kindle version of any book at one buys ... that would be a friendly traveler thing to do.Also, I would be nice to have a tram map included.
We have bought other guide books, but always return to Rick Steves clear, concise and well laid out books. The print size is perfect for "aging" eyes. Rick makes it easy to navigate seamlessly around new cities and towns. We solved the great metro system in Porto as well through his complete Portugal guidebook which we bought after altering our itinerary. Well worth it!!! After his recommendation for vinho verde, we are enjoying this wine here in Porto.
A great resource for our trip to Lisbon. It was small enough to fit into my purse and contained all the necessary maps. I appreciated the updated information so we were dealing with current schedules and rates of events and locations such as using the tram versus taxi. His recommendation for a private tour was spot on! I would definitely recommend this book.
