I love cottages, and was hoping that this book would be a helpful guide to different styles and building/remodeling techniques I could use in finding/building my next home. Instead, it is a collection of puff pieces - mercifully only a few short pages each - profiling remodels and new builds in no depth whatsoever. Clearly a collection of magazine articles that allow the architects to say, "I did that!" If I were in a generous mood, I'd say there are a couple of little tips about how to make the most out of a small space, but none of those tips make the book worth purchasing. I really want to return this (and if you knew what a book nut I am, you'd realize what that says about this book), but "this book sucks" is not a return option apparently.

... but not quite what I was looking for. It's less about using space efficiently and more about people showing off overly expensive and modish houses, many of which I wouldn't consider small at all.

I love the ideas in this book and the detailed photos. Several (but not all, unfortunately) of the houses include the cost of construction, which is very helpful. Whether you are looking for ideas when remodeling your existing home or looking to build new, there are lots of ideas here that can be adapted to one's one home.My main criticism is that a good fraction of the featured homes are vacation homes rather than full-time residences, so are not really representative of what people would want for every day use. Still, there are also a good number that are principal residences. There are lots of great ideas regardless, and the emphasis on interior detail and multi-use spaces is helpful and welcome.(I have to admit I was baffled by the featured houses that also had guesthouses - complete with kitchen etc. Did seem to rather negate the whole point of building a smaller house in the first place, and by far the most expensive way to have extra space!)

If you're interested in cabins and cottages then this is just a wonderful browsing book!!

I guess I was expecting to see a large variety of dwellings

This book has great ideas on remodelling and building a new house.

Great book!

A good book with useful ideas and illustrations.

If you are going to do Slovenia and Croatia on your own, this book is extremely helpful. We just got back from a trip of five days in Croatian Dalmatian coast and 2 days in Slovenia with a day of travel in between the two. We were there at the end of September which is an excellent time to visit as far as not having to deal with crowds except for Dubrovnik. We flew into Dubrovnik and stayed there for 3 days before renting a car and driving up the coast to Orebic across the water from Korcula for 2 days. We then took a drive up to Lake Bled in Slovenia where we stayed at Pension Mayer for two days. The book was extremely helpful in regards to picking restaurants to eat at and activities to do. It was also extremely helpful to avoid crowds. Dubrovnik was bad during the day with all the cruise ship passengers coming into town so we did some simple but very enjoyable day excursions to get away from Dubrovnik Cavtat, Lokrum, Zaton Bay Sea Kayaking (Sea Kayaking through Huck Finn Croatia and not Steve recommendation). We walked the wall early (at 8 am) before all the cruise ship passengers came in (as Steve recommends) and that was a spot on recommendation. The only lodging recommendation we took from the book was Pension Mayer in Lake Bled which I would definitely recommend. Basic room but reasonable prices, excellent breakfast and restaurant and good location for checking out Lake Bled. Hindsight is 20/20 but if I had to do it all over again I think I would have spent all my time in Croatia. Slovenia is awesome but to me the Dalmatian Coast is pretty unique - very beautiful, the water is a little cool 72-75 degrees Farenheit but definitely swimmable, one of the cleanest seas in the world and no worry of shark attacks (only one type of smallish shark with no documented history of shark attacks). The coast is rocky so I would recommend bringing or buying a pair of water shoes. Didn't get to do Istria, Plitvice or trips to Mostar (in Bosnia) or Montenegro which I would definitely like to do as this book recommends (if you have sufficient time).

Good guide for Croatia. My daughter who I met in Zagreb loved Slovenia. The guide has some critically important info on money, air travel, rental cars and driving, food, lodging, and history. But this small country has so much to offer. In some ways, its a microcosm of Europe because of its history. This is a great book to read as your primary resource and to narrow down your schedule, but I would recommend that you continue your research online to go deeper into your individual stops, especially to find out about current music, theatre and festivals. Realistically, don't think you will understand everything about Croatia from this book. There's just too much to see and absorb. Spent two weeks in May 2015 with my adult daughter. We found the people especially friendly and found English is spoken throughout. We visited Zagreb, Slunj, Split, Korcula, Zadar and Rovinj. Do not miss Split. You could definitely stay a week and add one or two adventure based tours in the hills and an island tour, investigate Klis Castle and Trogir and have a full trip. The thing I agree with Steves the most is his recommendation to stay at Sobes and private apts. We stayed exclusively at AirBNB facilities and one international hostel in Split. Be aware in Zagreb that the old or beat up exteriors house absolutely beautiful remodeled and immaculately cleaned interiors. Staying in the center of the historic centers of the cities is definitely advisable especially if you are bouncing from one place to another. Some of the hosts proved to be highlights of the trip, especially Zlatko in Slunj and Slavica in Zagreb. The thing I most disagreed with was the characterization of the people in the Slunj area and the inference to avoid the region. We might have been lucky with Zlatko and the waiter at Petro restaurant, but I will return and spend several days with my wife. Do not miss this region to experience Plitvice, the crystal clear rivers, Rastoke, rafting and other adventures, the wine, the cheese, the trout and charcuterie. Rastoke is the Rivendale (from the movie Lord of the Rings) of the real world.

I read this book and the lonely planet book before my trip and I preferred this one. I am a fan of Rick Steves' show and this was his first book that I used. The LP book felt like information written down for me to absorb while this one felt like it was written by someone explaining the activities to me. I am in my 20s and found many things that caught my interest in his book and was happy to see things such as nightlife in different cities included. The title is misleading as it also includes Bosnia and Montenegro. I had planned on only going to Croatia due to time restraints but wished I had the time to make a side trip into each of those countries as well. The information he included made me wish I had even more time to visit more locations. While I did prefer this book over the lonely planet book, each one had different things that the other passed over; I would not get JUST this book as a single guide (I would also suggest using more than just the two guides I mentioned) so you make sure you don't miss something that you would love to see that may not be included.

Stephen King and I both turn the dreaded age of 70 years old this year! If that is not scary enough I decided to plunge into a reading of many of King's classic novels and short stories. Night Shift is the first of his story collections . It was published in 1976. The tales hold up well and will be read well into the future. Among the stories:Graveyard Shift-Mutant Rats run on a rampage of murder and horror deep within the confines of an old and decaying buildingThe Mangler;A machine possessed by evil goes on the rampage in a laundry.Trucks-Trucks without their drivers unite in an evil confederacy against humanity.Sometimes they Come Back-A group of murderers return to a classroom to torment a man whose brother had been murdered by the returned students many years before the story begins.Battleground-Toy soldiers run wild and attack a man.The Lawnmower Man-A worker for the mythical god Pan destroys a suburban homeowner with his mad mowingQuitters Inc.-You will never pick up another cigarette after this story!Children of the Corn-A famous story about children with evil eyes in the cornfields of middle America. The edition I read contained a good introduction to King by John MacDonald and also a fine prologue written by King. Curl up and enjoy this early but outstanding book of short stories!

I'm a bit hesitant to write a review on this book, seriously are any of us worthy to review and or critique Stephen King? No, no we are not.If you haven't read this book, I am both jealous of and shocked by you at the same time. You get to read this book for the first time! That is a precious gift. Yet, I am shocked! How have you never read this book? Is that possible? The mind whirls...Buy this book, read it, put in your library.

I have been an avid book reader since I was 6 years old (this was many many moons ago my gentle readers) I read Carrie, Salems Lot and The Shining etc when they first came out - the Nghtshift escaped me somehow; plus I do not like short stories that might be why I missed it,,,anyway I have recently read Doctor Sleep, Mr Mercedes and Revivial and out of the three I guess I'd pick Doctor Sleep as the best one but even that is tepid by King standards WHAT HAPPENED - I am reading this Nightshift and am so amazed at his writing - he IS the epitomy of author extraordinaire and I again do NOT like short stories but these are so good, so entertaining - they aren't dated in a bad way - to me theyre dated in a way that takes me back way back to being 7/8 years old under the covers with my torch staring at the words in the middle of the night as my mom told me time and time again GO TO BED and yet my spine was tingling for Pet Semetary or whatever other deliciously scary book King was creating why can't he go back to that I guess Joe Hill is picking up where his dad left off? I don't know I just know that after reading this Nightshift I am going straight to "IT" the only other great King novel that I didn't get a hold of when it came out (at the time I think its page numbers intimidated me then I read the 1400 page the stand and now I can read anything) point of all this gibber gabbish is I WANT MY KING BACK!!! STEPHEN BABY SWEETHEART COME BAAAACK SOMETIMES THEY COME BACK .....RIGHT???? RIGHT?.....hello...??

"The thing under my bed waiting to grab my ankle isn't real. I know that, and I also know that if I'm careful to keep my foot under the covers, it will never be able to grab my ankle. "This is the first time I have ever read a collection of stories and who better to start with than Mr. King. I wasn't sure how I was going to feel reading a bunch of separate stories compared to one whole tale. In the end I enjoyed it but was left wanting to feel a little more invested in the works as a whole. That is the reason for a four star rating over a five, because they're five star stories in this book. My favorite ones being The Last Rung on the Ladder, Children of the Corn, and One for the Road. Overall this was a pleasant experience and I will definitely read more collections but for now back to the novels.

Night Shift is the first book of short stories of Stephen King. This one has many good stories in it Some of my favorites:Quitters Inc: A smoker wants to quit smoking, and goes to a company called Quitters Inc, which cures smoking through threats of violence.Battleground: After returning home from a "job", a professional hitman receives a package containing sentient toy soldiers who proceed to attack him.Children of the Corn: One of Stephen King's more well known stories. A vacationing couple encounters a small town full of homicidal children who worship a deity that resides in a cornfireld.I certainly enjoyed this book and i'm sure you will too!

I like Stephen King, so I knew coming in I'd enjoy this, but boy did I not expect how much I'd love this. King has an eye for human drama, and weaving in supernatural elements to heighten the tension. Some of the stories are better than others, but all are well-crafted and worthy of reading, especially at night before bed for optimal atmosphere. My personal favorites:Jerusalem's Lot -- an unabashedly Lovecraftian story, but exceptionally well-written.The Mangler -- the images in this story...ahhhh, I just can't get over how these details keeps this story horrific and not campy.Children of the Corn -- In short, the movie version marred a wonderfully creepy story. The Last Rung on the Ladder -- I think this is the real dark horse of the collection. It is surprising how fiercely it touches the reader, and how heartbreaking the conclusion is.I reiterate -- read these at night. King is best when the sun is down and you're all alone.

As an investigative reporter, Evan Ratliff deftly uncovered the dark organization of Paul Le Roux, a megalomaniac driven by crackbrained grandiosity and fueled by paranoia. Le Roux had created encryption code that the NSA could not break. He leveraged his technical brilliance to exploit ambiguities in the U.S. drug laws, and he enlisted thousands of legitimate pharmacies & doctors into a complex, opaque network. They prescribed millions of doses of painkillers as a result of Le Roux’s sophisticated and relentless email spam solicitation.Obsessed with power and greed, Le Roux used a twisted combination of financial incentives, psychological control and death threats to expand his empire into gold, illegal drugs and arms deals to rogue states. He ultimately ruled a vast empire ranging from North Korea to Somalia from his safe haven in the Philippines—where he controlled the police and judiciary.Ratliff weaves this journey into an incredible story. Just when you think it can’t get more bizarre, it does.

I was intrigued by this non-fiction story after reading the prologue, and indeed the first few chapters are riveting. Paul Leroux is a devious mastermind who helped fuel the opioid epidemic in the US. The way in which he skirted the laws and laundered his money were genius because it was almost legal. The author makes a very good case that had Leroux continued in that vein, instead of breaking all the way bad, he would have been a celebrated billionaire. This is a fast read, though, I read it over a weekend, and look forward to the TV documentary...some day.

This book has it all -- a brilliant criminal mastermind, a cast of sometimes-bumbling mercenaries, a dogged DEA agent, and a trail of blood that Ratliff follows from the Philippines to Israel to Brazil to a nondescript bureaucratic office in Minneapolis. Reads like a thriller, but it's all, unfortunately, totally true. A terrific book.

Perhaps scholarly and determined erudition best describe this manuscript of events so connected to one man's brilliance, corruption and savagery as they evolve into years of ruthless dominion over relentless crimes from the allure of power, wealth and sex.No, you won't find any quotes from the likes of Ben Franklin or Billy Graham in these pages. Author Evan Ratliff recounts his four years of inquiry and source materials from individuals on six continents in nearly 400 pages of events that "really happened". Events such as drug and gun running, murders for vengeance and for hire, extortion for pecuniary needs, and much more where page turning becomes another adventure into human greed and other familiar receptacles.A sociopath is defined as one lacking conscience with attendant defective mental or emotional disturbances. Was the protagonist and central character in The Mastermind, Paul Leroux, sociopathic in his daily routines? Readers will likely consider this a rhetorical question as they absorb the sequences in these chapters.Umbriago

I have enjoyed Evan Ratliff on the Longform podcast, so before this book came out I suggested my local library purchase it, and they did. I borrowed it immediately and read it over a weekend; engrossed enough to ignore all of my typical weekend activities. It is a bonkers story, well researched and well presented. It's good enough that I decided to buy the book to support the author, and read it again. I look forward to the film version, and whatever else Mr. Ratliff produces in the future. You should buy this book.

Ratliiff’s fabulous reporting and accessible writing has resulted in a truth is stranger than fiction crime tale that will keep you engrossed to the very end.

Le Roux a/k/a "The Mastermind" is basically a Bond villain, and this book unfolds like a great espionage/crime thriller. It's hard to believe this is real life, but the author obviously spent many hours researching the story to accurately capture every detail. Definitely worth a read, for fiction and nonfiction fans alike.

This is one of THE best books I have ever read. Wonderfully written, and you just will not believe some of what you read, but it's true! I could not put this book down. Paul Le Roux is a true monster, as evil as they come. But this book. You won't regret it!
