If you are going to do Slovenia and Croatia on your own, this book is extremely helpful. We just got back from a trip of five days in Croatian Dalmatian coast and 2 days in Slovenia with a day of travel in between the two. We were there at the end of September which is an excellent time to visit as far as not having to deal with crowds except for Dubrovnik. We flew into Dubrovnik and stayed there for 3 days before renting a car and driving up the coast to Orebic across the water from Korcula for 2 days. We then took a drive up to Lake Bled in Slovenia where we stayed at Pension Mayer for two days. The book was extremely helpful in regards to picking restaurants to eat at and activities to do. It was also extremely helpful to avoid crowds. Dubrovnik was bad during the day with all the cruise ship passengers coming into town so we did some simple but very enjoyable day excursions to get away from Dubrovnik Cavtat, Lokrum, Zaton Bay Sea Kayaking (Sea Kayaking through Huck Finn Croatia and not Steve recommendation). We walked the wall early (at 8 am) before all the cruise ship passengers came in (as Steve recommends) and that was a spot on recommendation. The only lodging recommendation we took from the book was Pension Mayer in Lake Bled which I would definitely recommend. Basic room but reasonable prices, excellent breakfast and restaurant and good location for checking out Lake Bled. Hindsight is 20/20 but if I had to do it all over again I think I would have spent all my time in Croatia. Slovenia is awesome but to me the Dalmatian Coast is pretty unique - very beautiful, the water is a little cool 72-75 degrees Farenheit but definitely swimmable, one of the cleanest seas in the world and no worry of shark attacks (only one type of smallish shark with no documented history of shark attacks). The coast is rocky so I would recommend bringing or buying a pair of water shoes. Didn't get to do Istria, Plitvice or trips to Mostar (in Bosnia) or Montenegro which I would definitely like to do as this book recommends (if you have sufficient time).

Good guide for Croatia. My daughter who I met in Zagreb loved Slovenia. The guide has some critically important info on money, air travel, rental cars and driving, food, lodging, and history. But this small country has so much to offer. In some ways, its a microcosm of Europe because of its history. This is a great book to read as your primary resource and to narrow down your schedule, but I would recommend that you continue your research online to go deeper into your individual stops, especially to find out about current music, theatre and festivals. Realistically, don't think you will understand everything about Croatia from this book. There's just too much to see and absorb. Spent two weeks in May 2015 with my adult daughter. We found the people especially friendly and found English is spoken throughout. We visited Zagreb, Slunj, Split, Korcula, Zadar and Rovinj. Do not miss Split. You could definitely stay a week and add one or two adventure based tours in the hills and an island tour, investigate Klis Castle and Trogir and have a full trip. The thing I agree with Steves the most is his recommendation to stay at Sobes and private apts. We stayed exclusively at AirBNB facilities and one international hostel in Split. Be aware in Zagreb that the old or beat up exteriors house absolutely beautiful remodeled and immaculately cleaned interiors. Staying in the center of the historic centers of the cities is definitely advisable especially if you are bouncing from one place to another. Some of the hosts proved to be highlights of the trip, especially Zlatko in Slunj and Slavica in Zagreb. The thing I most disagreed with was the characterization of the people in the Slunj area and the inference to avoid the region. We might have been lucky with Zlatko and the waiter at Petro restaurant, but I will return and spend several days with my wife. Do not miss this region to experience Plitvice, the crystal clear rivers, Rastoke, rafting and other adventures, the wine, the cheese, the trout and charcuterie. Rastoke is the Rivendale (from the movie Lord of the Rings) of the real world.

I read this book and the lonely planet book before my trip and I preferred this one. I am a fan of Rick Steves' show and this was his first book that I used. The LP book felt like information written down for me to absorb while this one felt like it was written by someone explaining the activities to me. I am in my 20s and found many things that caught my interest in his book and was happy to see things such as nightlife in different cities included. The title is misleading as it also includes Bosnia and Montenegro. I had planned on only going to Croatia due to time restraints but wished I had the time to make a side trip into each of those countries as well. The information he included made me wish I had even more time to visit more locations. While I did prefer this book over the lonely planet book, each one had different things that the other passed over; I would not get JUST this book as a single guide (I would also suggest using more than just the two guides I mentioned) so you make sure you don't miss something that you would love to see that may not be included.
