I played hockey, was in high school during the time that Tie played in New York, and for the most part can be considered a fan as much as I can be a fan of a player. When I spied this title on Amazon, I hadn't heard about it and was pretty surprised to see it have mostly good to excellent reviews. What the heck. I'm not much into sports autobiographies - especially when we aren't talking about a revolutionary like Jackie Robinson or a Hall of Fame face of the league like Wayne Gretzky - but figured I'd give it a go. Price is reasonable, surprisingly positive reviews, and it is Tie Domi after all, it has to be interesting. Right?Well, no, not really. I mean there are some interesting anecdotes sprinkled about, but ultimately they serve generally as a demonstration of one of Domi's virtuous attributes as a player, teammate, fighter, or all-around human, not merely as an entertaining story. That isn't to say that there's something inherently wrong with stories that are meant to have a greater purpose than to merely entertain, but after a steady diet of these, it almost more starts to seem like the greater purpose is to reinforce through a literal pummeling (pun calculated and intended) that Domi [ (a) is impervious to pain, (b) would do anything for a teammate, so long as it would also elevate the team (c) was a significantly more talented player in terms of scoring than I seem to recall or (d) can generally be found travelling the moral ground the long way along higher ground.I'm not trying to be snotty or overly critical, I am just explaining what criticism I do have. It is a perfectly readable book; chances are you can polish it off after a large bag of Taco Bell and not regret it. And I have some difficulty saying this as though it is a bad thing but it isn't as though this a compilation of salacious tales. It's a respectful look back where even at his most contemptuous for individuals in his past, Domi goes miles out of his way to soften any anger, disappointment, or negativity in general.I've admitted it isn't a genre that usually interests me so that accounts for a lot of what I consider shortcomings. But I did try to incorporate that bias by giving it two stars instead of three. If you do love the genre and particularly if you adore Tie Domi, you may just love the book. If you don't love at least one of those two - it just isn't very interesting.
After 25 years as a season ticket holder on the glass behind the visitors bench with the Broad Street Bullies, I spent a lot of time learning how to get under the skin of professional hockey players. I was the 21st player on the flyers bench.. through those years i spend many of hours working the glass and antagonizing the boys we all loved to learn to hate.. The game in Philly when you were visited in the penalty box by one of loved Tie Domi fans, we set the stage from behind the glass. Shift works, that was our job.. Tie Domi was at the list of the ones to hate back in the day, that smirk he wore every shift off the ice and the heckles we exchanged, the squirts of the water bottles through the years made me want to buy his book. Fighting back then in the day was a apart of the game how it was played, it was a job, understood and embraced. As the game changed so did my love for the game. Today, I am PENS fan, you should of taken the 3year offer and today you would have a ring!So.. Great job on the life of Tie Domi, the X hockey player who tells the story of what life is about. Somewhere between the chapters of Ties life back in the day, the story unfolds about a man who gets it!The true character of a person shines when the spotlight goes out.Your book was a pleasure to read and breath of fresh air on what Life is truly about.I wish you the best in the years to come and thank for the reality check in today's shift work! Thanks Tie, good stuffGo Max! Go Mario and the boys
I knew Tie was a fearless warrior on the ice, but while reading this book I was blown away by his incredible strength, decency, and kindness as a human being. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an inspirational read.
Shift Work might be Domi's greatest knock out of all. While even the most casual hockey fan will thoroughly enjoy this book, it is also a valuable vessel for anyone wanting to improve themselves as a business person, family member, friend, or teammate. Throughout the book I felt like I was Tie's friend, or at least I wanted to be. (During one chapter I actually considered putting the book down momentarily to knock my own two front teeth out).Truly an excellent effort for an author making his debut. For everyone who reads SHIFT WORK I'm sure you'll share my feelings that ol' Domes is a guy you'd love to go have a beer and watch hockey with.
Good read and very interesting. A glimpse into what the game used to be like when enforcers were still an important role. Definitely recommend for an hockey fan!
A great, and highly recommended book that tells a story about a person who came from humble beginnings who worked his ass off on and off the ice to become a very successful athlete on and off the ice, but more importantly a better human being. I read the book in three days and will probably read it again. Also, had the pleasure of meeting Tie recently at my company's event and not only did he write the nicest thing in my book but took the time out to speak to me and take a picture with me. I really appreciated that.
A testament to a never quitting, and what chasing a seemingly impossible dream. Never knew much about Dom's personal life, but it's great to read that he treated people respect, then passed on his values to his family. Good mix of hockey stories off & on the ice.
Great read and a great story. Thanks Tahir for sharing the story with us! All current and future athletes should give it a read. Much to learn from this book.
