From the Author
Hi, I'm Bill, the author of this book. I'm pretty sure the discovery of America started with a bar fight and I believe I can persuade you that it is so. The chain of events that brought Norse ships to Newfoundland began when a court in Norway found Thorvald Erickson guilty of murder and tossed him out of the country. We roughly parallel the Erickson clan's route from Norway to Canada in Out in the Cold, from Svalbard to the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland and finally to a windswept bog at the northern tip of Newfoundland.Out in the Cold proceeds from the same premise as my two previous adventure travel books: Enjoying a daiquiri on your cruise ship balcony may imply that you are on vacation, but it does not mean that you are traveling. Crowding people together on "fun ships" to share viruses for several days holds up as well as socks from Wal-Mart.Once, in the Himalayas, in a place called Sikkim, whose very geography required vocational derringdo, a mad driver told me "Man didn't evolve from apes to act like sheep." He meant that you must engage. Your free time is as surely an asset as your home or your car. I say, get out there and put some of it to good use. If the unexamined life isn't worth living (Socrates), get to examining. Get up and compare and contrast your experiences to those of others. In Out in the Cold we will meet an artisan carver of narwhal bones in Greenland. We'll cruise the streets of Reykjavik with an ebullient Icelandic author, hike with a part-time tour guide in Labrador who cannot imagine why you'd want to be anywhere other than on the tundra, and spend time with others whose lives, objectively, are nothing like your own.We will shake hands with the President of Iceland and stand naked and alone on the side of the glacier Vatnajokull (separately from the president). We will drop in on the last French outpost in North America, talk shop with a diplomat and eat wind dried sheep in the Faroe Islands, dine with strangers alongside icebergs at a lighthouse north of Newfoundland, and find Greenland so beguiling, we will visit twice.C'mon and join me. And please engage with me on Goodreads and on my web site CommonSenseandWhiskey.com, where we can communicate daily. I hope you enjoy the book.

About the Author
Lifelong traveler Bill Murray has visited 120 countries and territories from Albania to Zimbabwe. NOT Bill Murray the actor. Follow @BMurrayWriter on Twitter and the blog commonsenseandwhiskey.com. His first book, Common Sense and Whiskey, is a collection of sixteen off-the-beaten-path travel stories. You'll sail across Lake Malawi on an ancient passenger ship, pay a somnambulant visit to the world's least vibrant capital city, Ascuncion, take an unusual cruise up Papua New Guinea's Sepik River with no other passengers, and enter into a fraught multi-day relationship all the way across Tibet with a driver called Noodle Boy. Bill's second book is Visiting Chernobyl, A Considered Guide for Travelers. It revisits all the drama of the accident itself, relives the desperate evacuation, and discusses both the physical environs and the political circumstances of the Soviet Union at the time. It's a quick, handy and accessible introduction to the worst nuclear accident in history, useful for aspiring visitors and armchair travelers alike. It's not your traditional guidebook. Audiobook versions of both, narrated by the author, are available. ••••• Bill and his wife Mirja maintain the photo web site EarthPhotos.com, 20,000+ photos from around the world, and the travel blog CommonSenseAndWhiskey.com. They spend as much of the summer as they can in a cabin by Lake Saimaa in Finland, and live on a horse farm in the southern Appalachian mountains of Georgia, USA.

Every once in a blue moon, you discover an author who can bring you along on a journey worth taking, in a way that makes you feel as if you are there. In "Out In The Cold", veteran traveler, ace photographer and deft storyteller Bill Murray opens the door and enthusiastically invites us, compels us, even urges us to take an extraordinary excursion into the Northern hemisphere. Employing an extraordinary gift for sensory observation and plain-speak storytelling, Mister Murray graciously lets us walk and ride side-by-side as he revels in the historical and visionary marvels experienced in his lengthy sojourn, brought vividly to life with a healthy dose of local lore, myths, legends and straight talk from the locals. Wonderment, awe and thoughtful introspection are crucial elements to Bill Murray's approach in his diary style of narrative. You can sense his delight in the opportunity to share these exceptional moments in an exceptional life of travel. From the Arctic Circle to Canada, "Out In The Cold is a gift for anyone who loves cinematic writing. You'll find a friend in Bill Murray and, most likely, be eager to read his other highly entertaining and informative books.
I had enjoyed the author’s two previous books, so I was quite pleased to jump into this one. It did not disappoint. Mr. Murray begins his journey above the Arctic Circle in Svalbard and ends it at the ruins of a Viking settlement on Canada’s Atlantic coast.Along the way, the reader is treated to some lively andvivid descriptions of the places he visits, along with often empathetic portrayals of the independent, self reliant people he encounters. Mr. Murray’s keen observations and diligent research is reflected in a brisk and often humorous narrative. While the western migration of the Vikings across the North Atlantic is the thread that binds this book together, the reader will also enjoy elucidations on the science of solar eclipses and the effects of cold on the human body, some unique history of the places the author visits and commentary on the sometimes contentious contemporary politics of these northern regions with their distant European capitals.Whether you’re a seasoned or armchair traveller, this book will edify, amuse and delight. It’s a worthy addition to any travel library. Highly recommended!
With travel writing on the topic of greenland and the faroes few and far between, one could forgive the author if he settled for a less than comprehensive outing. But instead we are treated to an excellent book that blends travel with history and context. Bill doesn't take any particularly wild adventures, in fact you could see yourself easily retracing his steps in the north with relative ease. In fact that's one of the strengths of this book, as it makes these far north locales seem accessible for even the most rookie of travelers. History, commentary, travel and a sprinkle of science blend into a great book in a very sparse area of travel writing. While the book comes with a few common tropes of self publishing (a handful of repeated paragraphs and formatting oddities) overall these are easily overlooked. 5 stars and recommended
Ive been a fan of Mr. Murray's "off the beaten path" travels since his first book, "Common Sense and Whiskey: Modest Adventures Far from Home." His easy going style makes you want to learn more about places that you may have never thought of traveling to, like the Faroe Islands, Greenlandand Iceland, which make up the West Nordic region...He's in search of a solar eclipse, which like the Northern Lights is truly a majestic phenomenon. It's no wonder that many movies and television shows, like Game of Thrones & Prometheus (Alien prequel), are filmed in this part of the world. The landscape is wondrous and beautifully primal. Mr. Murray takes you along as he travels the North Atlantic to places, like the Faroes, that are like nowhere else on earth. These islands have a bit of Middle Earth to them, home to mountains, valleys and steep coastal cliffs that could give you the same feeling as when you were reading The Hobbit back in the day...Plenty of pictures & maps to help set the picture in your mind as you travel the Arctic Circle and beyond...heck, you even meet the President of Iceland. Bill Murray travels to places that many of us know on a world globe, but may never get to visit. He does, and it's a great read.
Mr. Murray's humor and warm heart help bring color and dimension to what some may perceive as some of the most frigid and tundra covered corners of the world. Using Mr. Murray's book as a guide, I found some even more unique than usual corners of Iceland. I look forward to return visits to the Arctic Circle, taking what Mr. Murray learned and shared from his many prior adventures, and putting that knowledge to good use. Somewhat like P.J. O'Rourke's two books on "Holidays in Hell," Murray brings laughter along with a desire to check out these places for yourself...without any of the often wordy, ...and then we ate at this cafe followed by an evening in this disco," etc...A good read, whether or not your are even considering travel to these northern climes. Skol!
Bill writes enchantingly, with wonderful sardonic humor, about places I have never nor would I ever visit. He lured me in with his short paragraphs and kept me enthralled all the way through. I didn't even know I was being educated as well, I enjoyed it so much. Beginning to end, this is a travel journal to share with all your friends, even those who do not travel. I am looking forward to reading backwards from this book to his Common Sense and Whiskey book, which I have now ordered as well. Enjoy!
I am throughly enjoying this book! It's fun to sit here in my warm house and read about a very different way of life in a very different climate. The fact that the author makes you smile in just about every paragraph is an extra added attraction.. Love this author's books!
Bill's detail and scope make me feel like I see the land and know the people. This is an excellent account of travel in a little known part of the world. I am enjoying the read.
