The book repeats what all the other atheist books have been saying for over a decade (or longer) now. If you are new to the atheist/christian argument, then this book would be a good starting point I guess. If you have read all the other atheist books previously published then you won't find any new ground here. It's also long winded at certain points and left me thinking that the author should just get to his point. I am an ex-christian, so this is NOT a christian troll giving this book a thumbs down. After all, how many times can the bible/christianity be debunked before the reader has heard it all? That seems to be the case with the books that are still being released by atheists today. They are just retreading familiar ground/arguments and pointing out all the same problems with the bible that most of the public is already aware of.

The author makes some strong arguments, including a few I hadn't read or considered before. The editing/proofreading is very weak which weakens the readability.

This book was good and addressed some topics I haven't seen addressed elsewhere, but it had an awful lot of typographical errors which were quite distracting. It badly needs to have the errors fixed, and then it will be a really super good book. But overall, I enjoyed the book.

Worthy library addition. Good exposition of subject.

says it like it is. good read

I was stunned at first when I saw the cover, then I read the free sample. The author makes a very compelling case, thorough research must have gone into this because I checked my Bibles for every single quoted Bible verse, and it is accurate. Up until about a third of the way through the book I was a believer...I once was lost, but now I'm foundWas blind but now I seeTwaz grace that taught my heart to fearI finished reading the book and now I feel set free from a terrible bondage, I feel sick... the years I lost to following blindly... if only I had read the whole Bible with my eyes open sooner.

Well organized, and the arguments are intelligent and thoughtful. This is really a four or five star book pulled down a rank or two by wobbly syntax. I’d still recommend the book, in any case. It’s got something important to say, and bar the odd awkwardly constructed sentence, it says it effectively.

Atheists armor.

I don't understand all the hype about this book. Rachel Hollis's life experience is so near perfect and so far removed from that of the average woman, that there is almost nothing in this book that is actually relatable. She uses the following examples in her book:1. She dropped out of school at 19 to pursue her successful event planning business that catered to Hollywood celebrities.2. She had one intimate relationship outside of marriage. They broke up for two days. On the third day he professed his love and they ended up getting married.3. Although they have four children, she and her husband struggled with infertility for eight months.4. Hollis admits she has a mean streak and uses the example of making fun of a girl in high school for shaving her toes.5. Hollis also shares in the book that she peed her pants on a trampoline and had a cavity at one point.6. Almost every chapter talks about how she made the Forbes "Top 40 Under 40 list", runs her own multi-million dollar company, and is a "good Christian girl".Perhaps this book could be appreciated by women who have lived a very blessed and sheltered life. But for anyone who has ever had to deal with real life issues such as poverty, illness, abuse, depression, co-dependency, dysfunctional families, loneliness, etc. I recommend you look elsewhere because this book will come across as one long never-ending humblebrag. All eight women in my book club agreed that the book had a tone that was "inauthentic", "judgmental", and "preachy". If you want to read truly authentic, genuine work that sheds light on overcoming human imperfections and failings, I recommend reading Jeanette Walls, Cheryl Strayed, and Elizabeth Gilbert. These female authors have lived very imperfect lives - like most of us - and you will find their work far more relatable than this book which comes across as self-aggrandizing propaganda. I ended up returning the book for a full refund, which I never do.Note: My original one-star review of the book (which 93 people found helpful in the first 3 days) was reported to Amazon and removed for not meeting "community standards" even though the tone was very respectful. I'm sharing this because it might help explain all the five-star reviews.

I've been following Rachel Hollis for years. Up until now, her message has resonated with me. As a lifestyle blogger, she produced great content, but her recent evolution into a self-proclaimed "mogul," has bothered me for the last year. Unfortunately, "Girl Wash Your Face" is "Mogul Rachel" instead of her previous, likable self. Here are my issues with the book:1. The fake "hey ya'll" language.Hollis may have (VERY) recently moved to Austin, Texas (where I also live), but don't be fooled by her plastered-on attempts at sounding "down home." She is simply emulating greater, authentic Texas writers such as Jen Hatmaker and Brene Brown. She grew up in Southern California and most recently lived in Glendale.Texans have a phrase: "Don't California My Texas." This applies to written work, too.2. The non-stop humble-bragging.We get it, Rachel, you are productive and work hard. Guess what - you also have a full-time nanny, full-time housekeeper, and an ACTUAL mogul of a husband to bankroll your PR expenditures, new staff hires, and property purchases. If your readers could afford to "run a company" and also not take a salary for 6+ years (while still having weekly mani/pedis, daily blowouts, etc.) I'm sure we all could be a "mogul" in our own way.3. The dangerous, non-expert advice.Hollis does not have a formal degree or certification of any kind, beyond a high school diploma. She is 100% unqualified to give advice in the areas of physical and mental health, relationships, trauma/recovery, and life management. Marrying the only guy you've ever dated and having kids doesn't make you a relationship expert. It makes you a wife and mother. Losing weight and exercising doesn't making you a trainer or nutritionist. It makes you a person who has eaten well and exercised to better health. And experiencing trauma and having a therapist does NOT make you a mental health professional. It makes you someone who has worked through their own issues.4. The strategic "Christian-ish" positioning. This book is categorized under the "Christian Books" section on Amazon and similar retailers. This is a tactic by the author and publisher to rank higher and make the NYT's best-seller list. Those who have read the book have already noted the lack of actual Christian content. I mean, Rachel doesn't even thank God in the acknowledgements section! She does thank her nanny, though.5. The unoriginal, co-opted thoughts. Anyone who has read ANY of the following authors will see their content co-opted (and unattributed) throughout this entire book: Tony Robbins, Oprah, Elizabeth Gilbert, Jen Hatmaker, Brene Brown.I could go on, but I think I've made my point. I'll sum up my thoughts on this book in two words: derivative drivel.

My goodness I was sucked in due to the hype of this book. OMG, NO. Rachel is so entitled and preachy and comes across as exactly the kind of person I detest. Everything in the book was "me me me!!!" and offered no insight to real problems. This book made me irrationally angry, which I think is the exact opposite of what it was intended to do.

Like so many other reviewers, I wanted to love it... So many of my friends have nothing but praises for the book, so I bought it.I’ve been disappointed from the start. I ended up feeling so annoyed that I wasn’t able to finish the book.I felt like it was too much “me me me” and humble bragging, as another reviewer pointed out.

This is a really good overview of the role a chief of staff plays in making a successful presidency - or in leaving a presidency exposed to mistakes of policy and politics that can damage the executive's ability to get things done.Whipple gives brief vignettes of the various Chiefs from Nixon's H.R. Haldeman through Obama's Dennis McDonough (with more or less emphasis given the impact each had on the functioning of the White House). He catalogues their successes and failures and through the overview, one comes away with a good idea of what makes success and what behaviors and actions (or lack thereof) serves an executive poorly. Those interested in political history, politics or recent history will find this fascinating. I think anyone who is tasked as a chief-of-staff, or even a number-two the chief executive of a large organization that must deal with external as well as internal interests would be able to glean a lot of good lessons from Whipple's work. This book is short as are most of the chapters, but the author does an excellent job of focusing on the key aspects of Chiefs and their work at managing the White House and presidency. While this book could have been titled "James A. Baker and All the Rest," there are a number of Chiefs from both parties who Whipple holds up as great examples of how the enterprise can work well. Equally helpful are some who missed the mark and mishandled their stewardship of this important post.

Although this book does not deal specifically with the current administration, it deals with past presidents and how the dealt with the running of the presidency, namely the chief of staff. As you read it, my mind often went to "What's going on at the White House today; whose making the decisions; and who is the president listening to." This book is a wonderful insight into the daily life of the presidency and frankly, how the chief of staff in many cases was able to make or break a president's reputation. There were times that I found the book scary in the sense of one wonders whose really running the ship of state. For those interested in political dialogue, its a very interesting read.

"The Gatekeepers: How the White House Chiefs of Staff Define Every Presidency," by Chris Whipple, is a frank, hot-off-the-press book that incidentally addresses, with stunning and humorous detail, a key dilemma for all CEOs—what’s better: a chief of staff or seven or more direct reports? On Dec. 5, 2008, 12 of the 14 living former chiefs of staff to U.S. presidents gathered at the White House to give advice to Rahm Emmanuel—soon to become the chief of staff to Barack Obama. They didn’t hold back, as Whipple eloquently describes in this robust page-turner book. I couldn’t put it down—and I’m quoting from it almost every day. (Ask my wife.)I’ve listed 38 “True or False” questions from the book (or not?). The answers are listed at the end of the quiz.TRUE OR FALSE?H.R. (BOB) HALDEMAN, 1ST Chief to President Richard Nixon (1969-73)[ ] T/F: “…Haldeman’s successors credit him with creating the model for the modern White House chief. There is no one-size-fits-all template; every president has different needs. But the ‘staff system’ conceived by Haldeman is a model of governance designed to prevent calamity. Time and again, presidencies that have failed to follow it have paid a heavy price.”[ ] T/F: “The executive branch of the U.S. is the largest corporation in the world. It has the most awesome responsibilities of any corporation in the world, the largest budget of any corporation in the world, and the largest number of employees. Yet the entire senior management structure and team have to be formed in a period of 75 days.”[ ] T/F: “The president’s time is his most valuable asset.”[ ] T/F: Haldeman’s speech to Nixon’s incoming staff noted, “How we decide what is major and what is minor is the key to whether this is a good White House staff or a lousy one.”[ ] T/F: “When asked what books the president was currently reading, he would answer with another question, what books did I recommend the president read?”GEN. ALEXANDER HAIG, 2nd Chief to President Richard Nixon and Interim Chief to President Gerald Ford (1973-74)[ ] T/F: Haig was President Nixon’s last chief of staff and held that role when Nixon resigned on Aug. 9, 1974. He served as Ford’s chief for just 44 days. “Haig, scheming and mercurial, acted as though he was the president, and Ford his understudy.”[ ] T/F: “From the start, Gerald Ford’s White House resembled a kids' soccer game, everyone running toward the ball. Ford had announced that he would govern with eight or nine principal advisers reporting directly to the president—a circle, with Ford at the center. He called it ‘the spokes of the wheel.’ But the result was chaos and dysfunction.”DONALD RUMSFELD, 1st Chief to President Gerald Ford (1974-75)[ ] T/F: Rumsfeld convinced Ford that the “spokes of the wheel” organizational chart didn’t work. Ford noted, “Without a strong decision-maker who could help me set my priorities, I’d be hounded to death by gnats and fleas. I wouldn’t have time to reflect on basic strategy or the fundamental direction of the presidency.”[ ] T/F: “Genial and outgoing, Gerald Ford saw the best in everybody; it was Rumsfeld’s job to suspect the worst.”[ ] T/F: Advice to Rahm Emmanuel: “Immediately pick your successor.”[ ] T/F: “Unflinching, even by Rumsfeld’s standards,” the chief sent a memo to the president, prior to Ford’s re-election campaign, that “must rank as one of the most scathing missives ever sent to a president.” The final section of the memo, “EFFECTIVENESS,” urged Ford to focus on just “three to five big things” that demonstrated his administration had “sensible answers for the questions Americans are asking…”DICK CHENEY, 2nd Chief to President Gerald Ford (1975-77)[ ] T/F: “Back in the 1970s, Cheney [who also served as Vice President to George W. Bush] had taken a job aptitude test. His ideal career match? An undertaker.”PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER (no chief 1977-79)[ ] T/F: This book “is the story of how Carter, the quintessential outsider thought he could act as his own chief, thereby crippling his presidency.”HAMILTON JORDAN, “de facto”1st Chief to President Jimmy Carter (1979-80) [ ] T/F: “The ‘spokes of the wheel’ approach was not working.” So reluctantly, “two and a half years into his presidency, Carter agreed to give Ham Jordan the duties, and the title, of chief of staff. But it was obvious that Carter had gone all in on a bad bet: He had chosen the wrong person for the job.”[ ] T/F: Author Chris Whipple: “Overconfidence is an occupational hazard for incoming presidents—perhaps especially to Carter.”[ ] T/F: “No detail of government was too trivial for the president’s attention.”[ ] T/F: “We were at a reunion one day,” recalls Arnie Miller, a former White House aide, “and I said to Carter, ‘Thank you for empowering us to do things.’ And he said, ‘I didn’t do anything. I just read your memos.’ I said, ‘You didn’t just read them, you corrected the typos!’ That’s the level of detail he got into, which the chief of staff should have been doing.” The author adds, “Instead, the president personally signed off on everything from typos in memos to requests to play on the White House tennis court.”JACK WATSON, 2nd Chief to President Jimmy Carter (1980-81)[ ] T/F: The role of White House Chief of Staff is that of a “javelin catcher.”JAMES BAKER, 1ST Chief to President Ronald Reagan (1981-85)[ ] T/F: “You can very well make the argument that White House chief of staff is the second-most-powerful job in government.”[ ] T/F: “The man considered the gold standard in the job, James Baker, found the experience so emotionally grueling and deeply painful that he went to Ronald Reagan and tried, unsuccessfully, to quit.”[ ] T/F: “As for Reagan, when it came to firing people, he was a marshmallow; the president believed in second, third, and often fourth chances.”DONALD REGAN, 2ND Chief to President Ronald Reagan (1985-87)[ ] T/F: “As chief of staff, Baker had been emphatic: ‘The most important word in the title is staff.’ Regan had other ideas.[ ] T/F: “When Baker heard about the incident, he knew Regan was finished. ‘He hung up on the first lady!’ Baker recalls, still incredulous, 30 years later. ‘That’s not just a firing offense. That may be a hanging offense!”HOWARD BAKER, 3rd Chief to President Ronald Reagan (1987-88)[ ] T/F: “Joy Baker, the wife of Howard Baker Jr., was at their summer home in Florida when the phone rang. ‘It was the president, and he said he’d like to speak to Howard,’ she recalled. ‘I told him that Howard was at the zoo with his grandchildren. And the president said, ‘Well, wait until he sees the zoo I have in mind.’”[ ] T/F: After a spirited one-on-one meeting with Nancy Reagan, Baker told a colleague: “Don’t let anyone tell you that there has never been a woman president of the United States!”KEN DUBERSTEIN, 4th Chief to President Ronald Reagan (1988-89)[ ] T/F: “One of the problems with Don Regan was that he shut the door to the Oval Office. My attitude was, instead of having Reagan read all the material, open the door and let him see people. He’s an actor. He likes to look at people. He learns that way—whether it was congressmen or White House staff or cabinet officers.”[ ] T/F: Two years after Reagan’s historic speech, “…the Berlin Wall would indeed come down, and the Soviet Union would crumble. ‘He knew what he wanted to accomplish and he went and accomplished it,’ says Duberstein. ‘As he would say in his farewell address, not bad, not bad at all for a B-movie actor.’”JOHN SUNUNU, 1st Chief to President George H.W. Bush (1989-91)[ ] T/F: “Sununu was better at managing the boss than the staff, and Bush welcomed his whip-cracking efficiency as a gatekeeper.”[ ] T/F: Per Brent Scowcroft: “Sununu wanted to be the prime minister.”[ ] T/F: “His penchant for playing prime minister led him to screen out policy proposals he didn’t like. Cabinet secretaries complained so bitterly that the president set up a post office box at his home in Kennebunkport—a back channel for messages that would otherwise get spiked by the chief.”[ ] T/F: Sununu: “This was a very involved president, a very agenda-driven president, a very goal-oriented president.”[ ] T/F: “I think being chief of staff was the easiest job I ever had. It’s the job where I had all the resources that were necessary in order to do the job. I was never in doubt as to what the president wanted. And so I was able to go home every night with virtually everything quite tidy.”[ ] T/F: “At a bill-signing ceremony on the White House lawn, he shouted at a Washington Post reporter: ‘You’re a liar. All your stories are lies. Everything you write is a lie!’”[ ] T/F: Some years later, Sununu admits, “…thinking that not talking to the press was a strong plus…I did that out of loyalty to the president. I didn’t realize that maintaining better relationship with the press would have been of value to the president.”[ ] T/F: When calls for Sununu’s resignation became too loud to ignore, George H.W. Bush asked his son, George W. Bush (then 45-years-old), to inform Sununu. Why? Bush 41 was “allergic to confrontation.”SAM SKINNER, 2nd Chief of Staff to President George H.W. Bush (1991-92)[ ] T/F: “Skinner should have known he was in for a rough year: On his first day as chief of staff, George Bush threw up on the prime minister of Japan.”JAMES BAKER, 3rd Chief to President George H.W. Bush (1992-93)[ ] T/F: “The people who don’t succeed…are people who like the chief part of the job and not the staff part of the job.”You’ll have to read the book to see if the chiefs of staff to Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama fared any better! For example:[ ] T/F: Wondering if Clinton would be as good at governing as he was at campaigning, one staff “would sum up the frustration of his first year and a half: ‘We went from War Room to Dorm Room.’”ANSWERS: You guessed it. They are ALL true. (Yikes!)

Terrific book! Chris Whipple does an excellent job detailing the background of many of the issues of our times and how the Chief of Staff affected the outcome. Good insight into each President while keeping it all factual. Reader of the audio book, Mark Bramhall, has a smooth voice and didn't get bogged down with any dramatics while reading...just kept it steady and clear - great job! Overall I found the book well worth the price and only wished Chris had added another 50-100 pages.

At the outset, I will openly state my perspective on this and related books. I am not a medical professional. At the same time, I have long been an outdoor enthusiast, active in a number of different outdoor sports. I firmly believe that all active outdoor enthusiasts should seek and learn information to be able to provide reasonable self-care and care for members of their group who may become ill or injured. In prior instances I have been called upon to make use of some of my knowledge to treat myself and others, but fortunately not in severe or life threatening cases. My experience has been enough to give me a keen appreciation of how important good references are. With that general background in mind, I have found the topic of Wilderness First Aid and Medicine to be one of several survival related topics that is fascinating. The sixth edition of Medicine for Mountaineering is the third edition of this work I have purchased. In many ways I believe the work has been improved. The organization of the book has been, and continues to be very well thought out, rendering the information accessible. The writing and editing are top notch, such that the actual content is clearly presented. Also, the expansion and addition of a number of chapters was well executed such that valuable additional information has been added in the characteristically clear style. (These expansions include new or expanded chapters on Rescue and Evacuation, drowning, lightning injuries, avalanche injuries, expansion and division of the chapter on bites and stings, and other chapters.) Oddly the one feature which would significantly improve the rapid utilization of this book in the field, diagnostic and treatment algorithm charts, is largely missing. There are a few, but they are not really sufficient. (The best set of these charts in a reference for lay outdoorsmen I have seen is in the AAOS Wilderness First Aid manual.) In some instances the same or similar information is presented in Medicine for Mountaineering via charts or tables, but for rapid access an algorithm chart would be better. Nonetheless, the information is clearly better organized than some other works, such as the Fifth Edition of Medicine for the Outdoors by Dr. Auerbach. (In some places the content in Auerbach's book seems more complete, but the grouping of chapters in that work into Major, Minor, and Environmental, and Miscellaneous problems seems arbitrary. Both Medicine for Mountaineering and Dr. Forgey's book, Wilderness Medicine, are more sensibly organized by organ system and/or type of injury. As injuries and illnesses frequently flow from a minor injury to more significant condition, having them grouped sequentially can substantially aid a care provider in determining the precise level of injury or illness, treatment, and what to look for in terms of potential worsening.)The largest criticism I have is the decision, noted in the Introduction to the Sixth Edition to delete the dosing information for most of the drugs listed in the Medications Appendix while still providing information on indications and contraindications. This decision is nonsensical at best for a number of reasons. First, if as explained in the Introduction, all relevant information concerning dosing should be obtained from the prescribing physician, the same should be said for the indications and contraindications. Moreover, there are several scenarios and factors which are far from obscure which come to mind and support the inclusion of such information as follows:1. Based on my experience in obtaining prescriptions for use in outdoor medical kits, the conversation with the physician never seems to cover all of the possibilities likely to be encountered. For example, different dosing regimens which might be used for the same drug for different conditions usually are not conveyed. (The Fifth Edition correctly addressed this, with just a couple of examples being the information on metranidazole, benzodiazepines, and acetazolamide.)2. In reality, frequently medications in a wilderness medicine kit may be used for an individual who is not the person for whom they were originally prescribed. Is this perfect, no, but it will happen. Thus, the dosage information should be included so that if the medication ends up being administered to a different individual the correct dosage can be calculated. (Example from the Fifth Edition, chloramphenicol)3. The assumption made in the editorial decision is that the individual who received the prescription and had the discussion with the physician will be available or is not the injured party. Murphy's law can rapidly disrupt this assumption.4. Wilderness medicine is now commonly defined as including remote care more than one hour from definitive medical care, including recreational pursuits, remote living, remote work sites, disasters, and military situations. I will disregard the military as they generally produce their own references. Given the broad definition of what is to be addressed, the smarter option would be to have included less, not more information concerning the drugs. In disasters, for example, the only option may be scrounging drugs from available sources such that there is no opportunity for a consultation and the only opportunity to gain accurate information would be the reference in hand. While this may seem a remote possibility, having lived in New Orleans since 1991, it is not a remote possibility at all to my mind. Obviously, similar problems can occur with travel to other countries in which either the supply of medication brought from home is exhausted or an unforeseen need arises and a local purchase must be made. In many locales drugs that are sold as prescription only in the US are more readily available. Obviously, information should be sought from the doctor or pharmacist if possible, but having a written reference might make a difference.Closely related to the deletion of the dosing information for medication is the omission or limitation of alternative drug listings for some diseases and conditions. Once again, given the limitations on available medications in wilderness or austere settings, the first or second choice may not be available. Auerbach gives more depth on drug options in his work on a number of diseases and conditions, although Forgey generally does not.Ultimately, the new edition is a very thorough and complete in its coverage, with the exception of the above noted criticisms. The new edition clearly has a place on the bookshelf of any outdoor enthusiast. On the other hand, without the information noted above, it is no longer a single volume reference that will answer all needs. At a minimum, some drug reference material would now have to be carried with it for complete coverage.

While I have no experience with previous editions, I must offer substantial praise for this book. Like the previous reviewer, my medical library also includes Auerbach's Medicine for the Outdoors and Forgey's Wilderness Medicine. All three texts have their strengths with this text ranking only slightly behind Auerbach's in my opinion. In short, Forgey's text is much shorter but includes very practical tips for gear and medications, detailing alternative uses for most everything. It would be easier to pack than the other two and is easy to reference.Auerbach and Wilkerson provide more extensive medical information. Wilkerson's layout is easy to navigate and can also be quickly referenced. However, I personally find Auerbach easier to read and his diagrams more helpful. Auerbach's medication index provides a quick dosing reference (lacking in this text) and is well organized by symptoms/indications but does not provide any further info or contraindications (included in this text). Finally, certain advanced techniques such as suturing seem unnecessary in these books. The layperson should not be attempting such skills, especially in a wilderness setting, and especially if they are learning them from a textbook alone; and advanced providers with proper training probably don't need the reference at all. This and other examples may require an untrained reader to filter out information that would not be terribly relevant. There are numerous alternatives for wound closure and I can think of no 'last resort' situation that would require an amateur suture attempt in the field. However, for general knowledge of such procedures, these texts provide excellent background.Comparisons aside, Medicine for Mountaineering serves its purpose as an instructional and reference text. You can't be too prepared. As mentioned in the previous reviewer's excellent commentary, perhaps no book has all the answers. This is an excellent place to start.

As an avid backpacker this book is a must have for wilderness first aid. Easy to read, and follow, it gives a comprehensive guide to understanding the problems that can be encountered in the back country

This is the third edition of this series that I have used going back 20 years. This is also the most up to date book that is great when out in the field or backpacking. For me it's a must have!

I studied this book before attending a Wilderness EMT program, and it laid down a good foundation to learn from. I find I keep coming back, month after month, for a refresher or reference for whatever challenge is at hand. Good start to build from!

First copy was the blue binding. This one is a larger format. I agree with other reviewers that the smaller format was better. Whinging aside. this is my hands-down favorite backcountry guide. OK, that's wrong. It's my second-favorite after my GPO copy of the Special Forces medical guide. ...Which goes in a binder, not in a pack...Others might like Auerbach better, ymmv.

A must read even for use around the home or on the road. Goes far beyond basic first aid and prepares a person for those unthinkable moments that might never happen, but can and do happen. Murphy`s Law: if you are ready for it, it probably won`t happen, if you don`t have any idea what to do in a situation, it will probably happen.

I can not recommend this book enough. It gives a very thorough examination of treating injuries in the" outback". I bought this book after I read an earlier version and wanted updated information.

There are no real estate agents in Antigua. Usually you learn about houses for sale by asking several elderly women who make a business of knowing about everything that goes on. If you but a house through their knowledge of local gossip, a small fee is expected of the purchaser and not of the former owner. I had come here with my wife, Margueritte, to finish a novel. Margueritte was making good use of her time recording the Guatemalan scene in water color, and, during the months that we worked here, we began to think increasingly of making Antigua our home.

"The characters, the setting (complimented by the always goegeous Gabriel Rodriguez art), the mystery, the intrigue, everything all presented and balanced so deftly that it almost hurts." — Ain't It Cool News"In case my past reviews didn't praise him enough, let me reiterate that Gabriel Rodriguez is a master storyteller. As such, Hill once again illustrates complete faith in Rodriguez's ability to show the reader everything they need in order to piece the story together." — IGN

Crown of Shadows, the third full-length installment of the sensational Locke & Key series, continues to follow Dodge (disguised as classmate Zack Wells) in his unremitting quest to unearth the Omega Key that will unlock the Black Door. Armed with an unholy crown found in the dark recesses of Keyhouse, Dodge raises an army of shadow monsters to torment the Locke children. Surrounded and outnumbered, Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode find themselves alone in a desperate battle for survival. Meanwhile, their grief-stricken mother, Nina, drowns her sorrows in alcohol, wrecking emotional havoc on herself and her children.Riveting and profoundly creepy, the Locke & Key series gets better with each installment, injecting new mysteries into the existing storylines and introducing new bizarre keys that perform fantastical feats. Readers at this point will be glued to the pages waiting to find out what each newly discovered key does. The fantasy element is literally taken to new heights with the discovery of a so-called Giant Key that—yeah, you guessed it—turns you into a giant.Joe Hill’s unique writing continues to impress and immerses readers in what feels like a full-fledged novel. The brilliant visuals crafted by Gabriel Rodriguez are flawless, and the emotions of the characters bleed through even without words. Both author and artist have an equal chance to shine in this latest volume, and audiences can only expect great things in the three remaining installments.

I was going to space out each volume between other books, but I had to read this one right after finishing the second volume. This one has some incredibly emotional moments in it, and it really explores what can happen after someone suffers horrible events in their life. For the Locke mother, she is still suffering from her husband being murdered and herself being brutally raped, and finds what comfort she can in the bottom of a bottle. There aren't many other stories in any format that would go as far as the creators did in Crown of Shadows, but it just feels so real that it hurts all the more. I wished that the children could somehow have helped her more, but that situation would be so difficult, and even the perfect words and actions might not be able to help. In this volume, there's probably a little more action than in Head Games, especially towards the end which features an amazing fight with the Lady in the Well using living shadows to attack the Locke children and search for the Omega key. Part of the fight features multiple pages of absolutely beautiful full page art, with no dialogue. It was just so amazingly well done, and I can't wait to read what happens next. Still, I'm worried about finishing the series too quickly, so I'll hold off a little before I read Volume four. Again, I'd very highly recommend the Locke & Key series. Even people that normally don't like graphic novels should give it a shot, because I've never really seen anything like it in any other form of media.

This is the 3rd graphic novel in the Locke and Key series. The 4th, Locke & Key Volume 4: Keys to the Kingdom HC, comes out July of 2011. This was an excellent installment in this series; this story just keeps getting more and more interesting. I think this was my favorite one yet, which is really saying something since I have loved them all. I should also mention that the hardback version of this is just beautiful; even has a lovely ribbon to keep track of your place in the book.As the Locke children's mother is incapacitated by grief and forced to deal with yet another loss, the Locke children are left to fend for themselves in a house where things are becoming increasingly strange. Dodge continues his search for the Black Door Key and summons an army of shadows to torment the Locke children. The Locke children are forced to fight for their lives against the shadows within. This is just such an interesting, if profoundly creepy, series. Every installment introduces new mystery to the storyline and every installment introduces strange new keys that do fantastical things. I am so excited to see what each new key does, and so interested in how this battle between the living and the dead, between Dodge and the Locke children will play out. This is definitely a novel for adults, some of the things in here are disturbing. The mother of the Locke children continues a rapidly increasing descent into misery and spends a lot of time drinking and being generally useless and tragic. The Locke kids struggle along as well as they can. It is interesting to see some of the affects from Locke & Key: Head Games and how they played out in this book.I was thrilled by the fact that this installment cranks up the level of fantasy quite a bit. When Dodge uses the Key of Shadows and summons and epic army of shadows things get really awesome. The artwork is incredibly beautiful and the shadow army lets the illustrators show off even more of their considerable talent. The story ended well enough, but I am still desparate to see what will happen next.Overall just an outstanding addition to this series. These books just keep getting better and better; more and more engaging and interesting. I can't help but feel that this is all building up to something incredibly tragic and I am desparate to know what will happen next. This is one of the few graphic novels I will go out and buy new in hardback; they are definitely keepers. The hardbacks are very beautiful with a lot of attention to detail to the quality of the book; making this book something that is a pleasure to hold in your hands and read. I can absolutely not wait to read Locke & Key Volume 4: Keys to the Kingdom HC!

I look forward to each of the Locke & Key stories and can't wait for them to come out. The detail in the artwork is unbelievable and I spend extra time on each page just looking at how everything is drawn out. I think that the pictures can tell the story even without the words, its really fabulous. As for the story line, its a great one and I would love to see it come to life on the big screen. There are so many different things that can happen with each of the keys/doors and I like the complexity of the different storylines. Even though they aren't, somehow Joe Hill is able to make it seem that the reader has a full-fledged novel in their hands. His writing is concise and quick-witted.The best thing about this series is that its written for adults. There is murder, sex, lying, and general badness happening. All the stuff I love reading about!
