This is a moderately entertaining little travelogue written by an American who has lived most of his adult life in Great Britain. The author specializes in sarcasm and can best be labeled a curmudgeon, as he travels from place to place from the southernmost coast of England to the tip (Cape Wrath) of Scotland. He visits numerous small villages and larger cities, making pithy observations throughout.Most of his prose is relatively amusing, but he can’t help but throw in political barbs from time to time, from wishing death to various American Republicans to excoriating British Conservative for not spending enormous sums of money on projects which he deems worthy. The book would be more enjoyable without these gratuitous swipes.All in all, it is very light reading and especially amusing if you have spent some time in the British Isles.

By giving Bill Bryson 3 stars, I feel like I am committing a heresy but I've thought about it long and hard and 3 stars is all this book warrants. I love Bill Bryson's writing, especially his travel writing, but this book is just not up to his standard. It feels like it was thrown together simply as a money-making exercise. There is no underlying thread to the book, there is no journey. It's a series of day trips to places he would have been going to anyway. The underlying theme is supposed to be the "Bryson line" but he barely refers to it after the first few pages and the only places he really visits along the line are the two ends. Most of the other places are nowhere near the line. He also includes a lot of material from other books, either it was in the book or it was stuff he had left over after finishing the book. I'm sorry Bill, you can do (and have done) better than this.

Bill Bryson may be wearing out his welcome. My English friends call him "Bryson the Curmudgeon." Unhappy with the US, he becomes a UK citizen and spends his time in rapture over the countryside and scathing about the people. This follow-on to Notes from a Small Island becomes what PT Barnum warned about: "Never follow an elephant act with another elephant act." In places Bryson is dead-on accurate. I know because I've visited some of the same out of the way places and pubs. But in other places he's simply mean. Maybe it's creeping age.

A very good opening and close were largely out of synch with the rest of the tone of the book. I have read and enjoyed many of the author's books beginning with Notes From a Small Island which I purchased at a small independent bookstore in Manchester England. Time has not mellowed the author, I did not find him to be a "playful curmudgeon" but rather too often being a grumpy old man. I also thought that someone who has so much respect for the English language could find other ways to voice displeasure rather than curse words and foul language. It's unfortunate that so many interesting observations about his adopted home have to be tainted in this way. It makes his apparent affection for the place expressed in the last few pages less believable, or maybe understandable.

I've greatly enjoyed many of Bill Bryson's prior works, but this one left me concerned about the drift to curmudgeonly thinking from focusing on what he doesn't like more than what is likable.Also, often politics enters many of Bill's books but never to this extent. The section on immigration Bill, sadly, embraced a straw man argument to stake out a position no one disagrees with.Being a logical person myself, seeing this descent into the illogical abyss left me wishing I had read a different book.Still, it's got 2 stars because there was a lot of interesting information. I've made 6 trips to the UK and I was often taking a new tidbit of info Bill exposed then looking up more information.My wife is determined to see the Ridley Mounds described in the books. I wonder what future generation will completely misinterpret the structure. This begs the question of how much guessing do we do looking at the many ancient structures. Was it really a super religious site, or someone's fanciful whim, or something in between.I just found it hard to enjoy the fun information combined with the straw man arguments pushing a liberal perspective yet at the same time bashing the actions of liberal government.

On the one hand he is a very funny and entertaining writer; no one can make me laugh out loud while reading the way he can. Also, he is so compelling in his praise and vivid in his descriptions; I really want to visit the places about which he writes.On the other hand, the angry old man stuff gets tiring. His liberal use of the word "idiot" evidences a real inner anger he ought to get under control. A poor government worker just doing their job by enforcing a rule isn't just wrong in Bill's eyes; he is an idiot...some lower being to be scorned for doing his job. It is an attitude the author has, and it is both tiring and troubling.I finally figured it out, though. I love travel because of the people on the way that I meet. Bill loves travel despite the people on the way that he meets.

Of the seven or eight books I have on PM, this is good, but not the best. The content is good and it's suitable to those learning about PM, but it's very long, too wordy at times, doesn't have as many examples or scenarios as some others, and provides too little detail in some places (in my opinion) and too much in others.Sounds like I don't like it - but I do. I just wouldn't use it as the standalone book in a PM class. Of all the books I have, it's the best in terms of introducing people to multiple methodologies. Chapter two is likely the best chapter I've seen to explain the PMBOK - that alone is worth buying this book if you are new to PM and want to study for one of the PMI certifications. It also has a lot of other information that most other books do not have, including on continuous project improvement, managing distressed projects, and managing multiple team projects.If I were starting out, I'd read Chapters 1 and 2 here, then go to The Fast Forward MBA in Project Management or Project Manager Street Smarts, then come back to this book. If studying for the PMP or the CAPM in addition to learning how to be a , I'd through the All-in-One CAPM/PMP Project Management Certification Exam Guide in the mix. Between them, you'd be on your way to understanding how to be a good PM.

I just completed my Project Management class in college, and it is the first time they have used the expanded version of the book (so far as I know). Robert Wysocki knows how to explain concepts deeply and thoroughly...not only will this help you prepare for your eventual PMP exam (you need 3 years Project Management experience to take that exam), but it will help you avoid the common pitfalls related to not choosing the correct management approach.Right after our finals, I spoke to a student who took this course earlier (with the older version of the book), and he was lucky enough to actually listen to Robert as visiting lecturer for one class. The man is nothing short of brilliant!This book is fantastic -- one of the true gems of my collge experience. I do have 2 minor quibbles, however: 1) Robert sometimes goes into an explanation that's far too wordy. He does not confuse, but at times he tends to repeat himself -- over and over, for several pages. Not the whole book, just now and then. 2) There are no review questions of any kind. (Not even a quibble for me, but it may be for you.) At the end of each chapter are scenarios to discuss as a group, if you are so inclined. If you are using this for self-study for certification, this will very likely be a real pitfall. However, you could supplement the vast wealth of Mr. Wysocki's real-world experience with one of the exam study/cram books out there.This is not the book to "cram" for an exam. It discusses terminology and concepts, but goes into great detail about the hows/whys pros/cons of various project management approaches and processes. You must actually read! This book is in no way designed to skim or cram, and you will not be able to do that with this book (unless you already read *this* book and are just reviewing it).However, if you want to become a good project manager, or improve your practice, this is the best book!

I am not a project manager but as an architect I find I am usually managing a project and the team assigned to it. More often than not, a real project manager is not available.I bought this book to find out what the latest project management best practices are. I own the 4th edition of this book and really liked it.This book starts out defining what a project is and what project management is and then it covers the PMBOK Process Groups and Knowledge areas in great detail. After that it covers different types of life cycles like Agile, Extreme, and Traditional. He then covers topics like Portfolio Management and Process Improvement.What I liked most about the book was the detail he goes into. This book contains a vast amount of information. He does a good job of providing summary overviews of what will be covered and then covering it in detail.I will admit the quantity of information can become overwhelming at times. There is a ton of it.One of the things I really like is that the author has created accompanying presentations. They are ready to use for training so your Project Support Office could use them for training across your enterprise.One of my favorite chapters was Managing Distressed Projects. It offers great insight into how projects become distressed as well as great advice on how to get your head above water again.On a decent size project I prefer to have a good project manager that I can partner with, it just makes the projects ten times more enjoyable. Mainly because I get removed from a lot of the politics.Notice I said a good project manager above. I have had my share of bad ones and they can make the project pure misery.I haven't met many project managers armed with the knowledge and the tools found in this book. I wish there were more. If you are a Project Manager, I beg you to read this book. If you are a CIO, Architect, Developer, or any other stakeholder on project large enough to have a Project manager, it would be good for you to read this book so you know what the project manager is working to accomplish during different phases of the project.All in all I think anyone involved with decent size software development project should read this book. It will definitely help improve your project's effectiveness accomplishing adding business value.

I read this book while I was in Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe in July,2011,I was staying at Somalisa Camp. The interaction with the elephants was fantastic,as they constantly came to a waterpole in front of the camp as well as the camps'sswimming pool to drink the water,Of course I appreciated those magnificient elephantswhich are often regarded as Africa's largest all the more so for having read this book. I even saw a battle for the waterhole between the elephants and a troop of baboons!!!The baboons managed to win the first round and take control of the waterhole.but the herd of elephants turned around and the baboons beat a rapid retreat. It was an incredible scene.I wish to thank the author so that the public can enjoy the elephants and all the other incredible wildlife of Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, I loved it,and feel it's a very special place. Sharon personalizes her experiences with her elephant friends in a way that makes you feel that the elephant are human. That elephant are very special animals is not in question when reading these books and Sharon puts the reader right there with her in among the presidential herds. I lovely read.

I met Sharon when I was in Africa a few years ago. A wonderful lady who has devoted her life to saving the elephants.

(It is available here: [...] )Sharon Pincott's tale of moving lock, stock and barrel-sized heart from a luxury life in Australia to a hut in Zimbabwe in Southern Africa and her daily life amongst the Zimbabwe elephant herd known as "The Presidential Herd" is a very moving story. Despite, supposedly being protected - these elephants have come under immense pressure from the land invasions euphamistically called "settlers" where even protected gazetted land is forcibly settled by people who do not know, or do not care for the environment and wildlife. The sad reality of snaring, poaching, encroachment and death is counterbalanced by Sharon's guts and determination to ensure the safety of the herd and the lengths she has gone to ( and still does today in 2009). Anyone who loves wildlife, who admires courage and is intersted in a life walked to the beat of a different drum (or who dreams of leading a differnt life)will enjoy and be inspired by Sharon's story.

As an ex Zimbabwian and a lover of elephants I was delighted when a friend recommended this to me.Sharon Pimcott shares her amazing relationship with the presidential Elephants of Hwange. She is a brave dedicated person who has overcome resistance from the authorities, fought against the greed of trophy hunters and continues to promote the need for people to visit the troubled country and bring in much needed financial support.Her descriptions of her close encounters with these magnificent animals are heart lifting and heart rending.The joy and privilege of the elephants inviting her in to their world is truly touching. Her grief and helplessness when challenging the snare setters is hard to read - but her dogged persistence in spite of personal danger has helped save many elephants from horrendous injuries and a long drawn out painful death.She not only describes her time with the elephants but there are delightful descriptions of other animals and birds and simply her love of all things african - the bush, the smells and the sunsetsAnyone who has an interest in elephants, conservation, wild life, safaris will enjoy this easy to read and most enjoyable book.She has included many amazing photos of her encounters and some of the 'stars' like Lady and little Libby.Buy it - the proceeds all go towards Sharons projects and this is much needed.

Heart rate training was a revelation to me! A former marathoner, after years of being away I decided to get back into running by signing up for an ultra-marathon (yeah, I know...) My main concerns are not getting a competitive finish time - they are simply finishing the race still on my feet. Heart-rate training is just what I needed. Proponents point out that, the longer the race (think 100-milers) the big risk is not going too slow. It is completely running out of fuel or some other disaster that results in that dreaded DNF: did not finish. Though my ultra is only 50k, most people in my gender/age group are on the course for a good 8 hours so hitting "the wall" is a valid concern.Enter heart-rate training. The premise is to run in a zone where you are burning fat. At any given time, you may only have about 2500 calories of glucose in your muscles and liver. If you run out, that is likely the end of your race. But even a slender person has over 100,000 calories of fat available. Heart-rate training allows you to conserve carbohydrate and burn the fat.My first run with a monitor was an easy 6-mile. I had gone no more than 50 yards when my monitor was beeping - my heart-rate was already too high! I found I was working WAY to hard and zipping right by the aerobic zone into being anaerobic, burning sugar. The funny thing is, when I finally tweaked my speed down to where I could jog for extended periods, my first thought was "This is easy - I could run forever at this pace!" Which, of course, is the whole idea :)So why not 5 stars? I don't love the diet. Now, that is not to say it doesn't work. I stuck with it for a week...but as a semi-vegetarian I just got mightily tired of not getting to have stuff like sweet potatoes, rice, etc. To be fair, the initial diet is meant only to be a 2-week test so perhaps this is an unfair assessment. But training with the heart-rate monitor is something I am completely sold on.

Today with the great popularity of endurance sports, there are dozens of books on endurance training. Many of them are pretty much worthless, as the tired and dated approach of applying a 'formula' to the complex, dynamic and highly individual challenge of endurance training continues to be popular. Dr. Maffetone offers a refreshing alternative based on supporting your health while you pursue fitness. This is something often overlooked by the highly motivated, goal oriented endurance athletes keen on working hard and going fast. If you care about being healthy, leading a balanced life, and honoring your body, this book will change your life. Dr. Maffetone's approach is incredibly simple, but based on good science and decades of hands-on experience, including his work with some of the greatest endurance athletes of all time, Mike Pigg, Mark Allen, Tim DeBoom and others. I'm not kidding when I say this book is one of a kind. It's an absolutely must-read for any endurance athlete, but more than that, its principles are really the only way to go if you want to be fit and healthy.

Fantastic book. Covers the MAF heart rate training subject and so much more. If you want to burn the most fat possible while training this is the book for you. Great method for Low Carb dieters as well since the workouts are all fat fueled and minimize carb burning. Transformed my way of training for killing myself anaerobically with Crossfit to much longer less intense workouts that maximize cardio gains.

No-one knows endurance physiology like Phil Maffetone, and it is great to get all his thinking in one volume. I have most of his books but this one is my favorite. Over the years I have trained for and competed in 51 Ironman Triathlons, and 24 Ultraman triathlons, and have had great success when using his methods, and seen poor results when i stray into other training regimens. I'm giving Phil 5 stars for staying relevant with this book.Dr. Foulk

Endurance has never been my forte... My old roommate had this book, and bought a heart rate monitor and watch to keep track of her training. After reading most of the book, I decided to buy a monitor also to use while working out too. I'm a biologist, and enjoyed the technical explanations of how the body reacts to exercise. The book was an easy read, yet full of information. I'm not an endurance racer by any stretch of the imagination, but the methods in this book did help me build my cardio without feeling like my heart was going to burst. The nutrition guide in the book was also helpful without being too preachy.

This book is (extremely) useful to competitive and amateur athletes, alike. It came highly recommended to me from a friend and he thought it would help me as much as it helped him. At that time, he was a highly competitive Ironman triathlete and I was an overweight, newbie struggling to do a 5K. That just says, this book is not just focussed on pros OR amateurs. It relates to everyone because it focusses on teaching basic principles of fitness and how our body works.Dr Maffetone touches on many important aspects that are overlooked by 90% of the people (including active/fit people!) such as aerobic vs anaerobic energy, role of carbohydrates, HR as an effective tool, using FAT as a fuel in long races (you heard it right!). Throughout the book, Phil uses examples of how he helped various athletes and non-athletes in improving their personal records and injury prevention just by improving their basics.The book itself is written in a very simple manner and is an easy read. If you are looking for 10minutes a day/ 3x per week magic workouts/schedules here... prepare to be disappointed. One has to read, digest and apply this information to their workouts and diet. Some of his concepts, might seem unconventional but they work very well. Whether you choose to follow Phil Maffetone's methodology to train for your next race or not, is upto you. But regardless, it provides a wealth of information for any enthusiast in world of endurance sports.
