Review

Ready, set, sew! Learn the basics, gather your supplies, pick a project, and start stitching. With a refreshingly new approach to free-motion stitching, this book encourages you to make something beautiful while improving your free-motion quilting skills. You'll find 24 projects and quilts that are light on assembly so you can spend most of your time stitching. A handy troubleshooting guide ensures success every step of the way. (Down Under Quilts Magazine, 11/1/13)Christine's easy-to-assemble projects are the perfect way to practice beginning quilting skills while making gifts and accessories for friends and family. After learning how to set up your machine for quilting and gathering the basic tools and notions necessary, simple instructions will show you how to try out the stitching designs provided. These designs work well with the given projects such as various bags, placemats and wall hangings. (Machine Quilting Unlimited, November/December 2013)I love the small projects included in the book that incorporate free-motion work. What a brilliant path to practicing stitching skills. Learning to free-motion quilt can be slow going if you’re waiting to be good enough before tackling a large project. Doing mindless practice quilt sandwiches gets boring! My favorite thing about Christina’s book is her approach to getting us to practice: Small Stitched Projects! Simple construction and good design make the projects perfect for practice. It includes all of the technical know-how needed combined with a game plan for how to get practice time in with something to show at the end of a session. With such limited time to create and sew it’s a brilliant approach! (11/4/13)First Steps to Free-Motion Quilting is filled with tips and tricks and all kinds of great information. And to top that off, there's a ton of crazy, great projects to make! (happyzombie.com, 11/4/13)This is a totally great beginner’s book.At the start, Christina lays out exactly what you need to get started. She walks you through cleaning your sewing machine, and explains about darning presser feet and extension tables and quilting gloves. She also explains the best kinds of thread for free-motion quilting.Turns out, it’s not a huge investment to get started on this craft. The next section is all basic techniques for FMQ. This section is beautifully documented, with well-lit, well-staged photos and lots of them. …And then there are many pages of sample designs to get you inspired to quilt.I’m so impressed with the instructional quality of this book. I’m having trouble articulating this well, but I feel like, as a beginner, this book gives me just enough instruction to get started without overwhelming me. (Craftypod.com, 11/18/13)I have to say, I've reviewed lots of free-motion quilting books. Of all the ones I have seen, I rank this one in the top two. The thing I like so much about this one is that it walks you through the stitches and free-motion quilting, and then the author offers some great fun and practical projects that will allow readers to practice those very stitches. Most of the projects are small and are great confidence builders. Can you believe that are 24 projects packed into the book?? (Jo's Country Junction, 2/3/14)Ease into the wonderful world of free-motion quilting with a kind and informative teacher who guides you every step of the way. Cameli shows you how to achieve the best results for many popular quilting motifs, in addition to giving 24 projects to help you master the techniques. Even seasoned quilters will enjoy the variety and ingenuity of the creative projects. (Quilters Newsletter, February/March 2014)This book not only offers tips and techniques, but grounds you in the basics. Once you're ready to go, try one of 24 projects to help you hone this new skill. (Stitch, 6/1/14)

What a terrific book! I have been stalling on trying machine, free motion quilting knowing for sure that it takes a lot of practice to become decent at it. I didn't want to ruin something I had made. But now, I am ready to GO! The book has multiple projects where "mistakes" made while practicing are just fine, they actually add to the beauty of the finished projects! What a great approach. I can practice and still turn out wonderful items. Thanks to the author for this approach. Usually I am not a fan of so many of the projects in quilting books, but this one had several that appealed to me. The little baskets and various bags that can be used for utility purposes are terrific. I see shopping and utility bags and little shallow baskets by my sewing machine holding notions in my very near future. The directions and encouragement are great, neither too much nor too little. Nice troubleshooting section too.

This book is just what the title says: a beginning free motion instruction book. As a bonus, it includes 24 simple projects that are designed to be quick to make so that you can spend a minimum of time making the project and most of your time practicing your free motion quilting. The instruction section is short but complete. The photos are good and the writing clear. Extensive use is made of bulletized lists so that you can quickly see the important ideas without wading through lots of text. In fact, as I read the instructions I found the author making all the same points I tell my students in my free motion classes.Following the instructions, a thoughtfully organized section shows about 65 different free motion designs, all very suitable for beginners. This section is a wonderful resource for quilting ideas. The remainder of the book – in fact more than half of it – is devoted to the 24 projects. There is a wide variety – bags, bowls, placemats, tablerunners, clothing, and quilts. The last part of the section discusses embroidery – or using the free motion designs on plain cloth or readymade clothing. Many of the projects have a “modern quilt” feel. They are young and fresh and are likely to appeal to younger quilters (Judging by her photo, the author fits in this category!)In short, I heartily recommend this book. The only reason I don't give it five stars is because I haven't worked through the projects and so can't evaluate them at this time.

I am a beginner to FMQ (free motion quilting). I have never done it before, but have a great amount of knowledge from reading about it. This book has connected the dots for me! I understand how you are supposed to start and end your thread. Quilting is awesome, because it has so many different art forms within one quilt! You are creating, putting together, and when you are done with a quilt sandwich, you have an entire canvas to "draw" on! It's the best because you get to shop, put together like a puzzle, then "draw" over your quilt! Christina is such a nice person, and was available to answer any question I had. She explains about tension, and what to do if your thread is laying on the bottom or top. She shows a lot of pics and diagrams on how to make different patterns on your quilt. She explains how to hold the quilt while you are quilting. She goes over what equipment you need, how to start and finish the actual quilting (which was always a mystery to me!), and the techniques that she uses to make amazing quilts. She uses a lot of different shapes: circles, triangles, squares, rectangles, and then goes on to show you how to do feathers that looks so amazing on negative space on quilts. Christina stresses that quilting is supposed to be fun, and the only rule is that there are no rules. She gives tips on everything that has to do with FMQ, and I learned SO much in this book. It's definitely a good book to pick up as a beginner. It's a great book to pick up if you have been doing FMQ, and want to learn more. It's a great book to have, so you can have it as a reference anything you have a problem with FMQ, or just don't know how you should quilt your quilt! She gives a lot great tips on what looks good on different parts of your quilt. I know I will be using this a lot in the near future, and grateful that I have it when I need to look up something quickly. oh! She goes over 24 projects you can FMQ on!!! The projects she has range from place mats, pillows, purses, and a lot of quilts. I'm grateful that I have an awesome book I can refer to whenever I need inspiration or a problem with my FMQ. Thank you so much, Christina!

If you are new to quilting as I am it's just hard to find the right information. These quilters guard their secrets like the US does on Area 51. Not even sharing with their fellow quilters at the local bee. And if they do share they don't share the proven shortcuts. But this book is packed with super easy instructions on setting up your machine, best supplies to buy, and is full of courage inspiring quips to make you say " Let's get on with it already". You will wonder what the heck you were afraid of in the first place. Don't wait another second searching for videos or techniques online. This is the best and only book to get you free motion quilting with confidence. I just finished my second quilt and the stippling is perfect all because of this book. Thank you Christina for making my Dad proud of me.

This is my "go to" book on free motion quilting! Christina's inviting and friendly approach helps one with beginner's fear. Her projects are varied in difficulty and fun, unique, and exciting, and they build confidence as you go. Most of the projects are small, which means even someone with an old home machine can do them. Her quilt designs are contemporary and fun, and her own projects shown in the book inspire me; they are clean and artistic at the same time, and her color choices are always lively, fun, and aesthetic. I think Christina is one of my favorite modern quilters, and her free motion quilting work is impeccable and highly skilled. She generously shares all of her FMQ tips to help make you successful. If you only could afford one book on FMQ, I would recommend this one.

Who knew that the American Theater Wing was about more than the Tony awards? Patrick Pacheco has written a gorgeous, wonderful love letter to the love of his life, enlisting his fellow artists to pen their own love letters to the American Theater Wing to celebrate it's 100th birthday. Even if you do not adore the theater as Patrick does, you may enjoy the story of what brave and determined women can achieve in advancing the cause of social justice and equality--before they even had the right to vote. Angela Lansbury, whose first encounter with the American Theater Wing was as a 14-year old refugee from the Blitz in 1939, sets the stage, to be followed by the famous (as well as not-so-famous) sharing their stories. Here's how it all started. As America entered World War I, playwright Rachel Crowther called for every woman with any connection to the theatrical profession to volunteer for the Stage Women's War Relief. They raised a tremendous amount of money (Theda Bara!), performing in hospitals, camps, training stations, service clubs/civic organizations, and battleships. After the war, the organization lapsed and was re-started when World War II broke out. The Stage Door Canteen served all Allied servicemen, regardless of race, which caused it to be threatened with closure and denounced on the Senate floor for "the mongrelization of the races". The response: "Go suck on an egg". It not only stayed open, but sprouted other canteens in other cities, the most famous of which was the Hollywood Canteen. Eleanor Roosevelt noted that the Stage Door Canteen was "the finest of all contributions toward war morale".These women were fierce. Take Margaret Halsey ("The canteen considered that a Negro serviceman who was good enough to die for a white girl was good enough to dance with her.") Here's one of her memos to the volunteer hostesses with regard to dancing with black soldiers:"You unconsciously, but arrogantly, assume that no male Negro can so much as glance at you without wanting to get you with child. The truth is, that while you are an attractive group of young women, there isn't a single one of you who's THAT good."Note that the female volunteers included the likes of Lauren Bacall, Gertrude Lawrence, Katherine Cornell, Tallulah Bankhead, Hazel Scott, Ingrid Bergman, Marlene Dietrich, Katherine Hepburn and Bette Davis, among others. Not all of them were women -- men entertained as well, such as Frank Sinatra, then at the height of his fame. There are so many stories and so little space in a review! Oh, and did I mention the gorgeous photographs! The American Theater Wing has, through its various programs, launched more illustrious careers than you can ever imagine, and it's all geared up to launch more in its next 100 years. As the late, great Joe Masteroff (Cabaret, ex-GI) said, the American Theater wing is many voices, fighting injustice. Get the book, hear the voices, you won't regret it. If, however, the idea of racial equality and social justice makes you a bit queasy, then it's probably not going to be your cup of tea no matter how much you love the theater.

A friend told me about the book before it was released. She said it was going to be great. She says that about all of the books she recommends. This time she was spot on.I have read the book twice cover to cover. You will want to study the beautiful photos and delightful stories of the past 100 years of theater.

“The restless depression which had come to so many of us because of the war gradually was making life—which had been interesting and stimulating—dull and selfish and narrow. It was intolerable to go on with daily routine. It was Dorothy Donnelly’s idea that we must have a workroom or our own, where only women of the theater world worked, and where enthusiasm and success would grow out of comradeship and our understanding of each other and sharing of a common responsibility.” So wrote Rachel Crothers, a playwright and co-founder of the Stage Women’s War Relief, in 1917. That sentiment—comradeship as the answer to national malaise, of discovering a bigger, shared purpose—has eery resonance now. The time could not be better for a book such as this, chronicling the American Theater Wing’s 100 glorious years. Through dozens of stories and striking photographs, the reader is taken on a journey that started with Crothers and other inimitable, inspiring, incomparable women, and continues to this day. The book’s editor, veteran theater journalist Patrick Pacheco, exhaustively researched and interviewed many whose lives were touched over the past ten decades by the American Theater Wing’s spirited ethos. Without giving away too much of the gold—you’ll have to read it for yourself—suffice it to say this timely book gives voice to a history we would all do well to remember. Unity, then as now, is the only way forward.

I love Patrick Pacheco’s book, American Theatre Wing, an Oral History:100 Years, 100 Voices, 100 Million Miracles! This inspiring book celebrates, among others, fierce American women, founding this fine organization when they didn’t even have the right to vote! These were strong, intuitive, compassionate and patriotic women who sacrificed everything for their love of the theater through two world wars and beyond. As the co-founder of the American Theater Wing, Rachel Crothers (a suffragette and playwright) stated, “the trained imagination of the theater can be used for serving humanity in more ways than entertainment.” One of my favorite aspects of the book is that it brings attention to both the poor and unheralded artists as well as the very famous—like Angela Lansbury, Patti LuPone, Rosie O’Donnell, Neil Patrick Harris and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The very nature of the Wing’s impactful programs is to nurture theatrical talent in marginal, poor and under-served communities. This book salutes Audra McDonald as a six-time Tony Award winner but on the next page, it touts the achievements of a poor struggling theater in inner city Chicago. The photos alone are a historical treasure but its the voices, all 100 plus, that resonate with insight, inspiration and humor. The American Theater Wing and their incredible mission has impacted our country in more ways than I ever imagined! Bravo Patrick Pacheco!

I love this book. At first glance, it's an amazing array of photos in a coffee table book setting. However, reading through it, it's a book about American History and how several amazing Women just happen to use their role in American theatre to champion soldiers, veterans, students, and much more. It's also a book you can come back to and read more.

A Quiet Genocide is an interesting novel which brings to light the horror of Hadamar – a Nazi hospital where more then 10,000 disabled children were murdered. Though I cannot say that I enjoyed the book because the subject matter is definitely not trivial, it was a great novel. Well worth the read.

I really liked this book. I loved The Book Thief (awesome movie and book btw) and this felt similar to it in that it is a story in the middle of world war two and makes you think about how people still had to make it through things that seem impossible. I love historical stuff and I knew going in that there might be some sad parts, there are, one particularly part near the end that might result in tears. The only thing I didn't really like about the book is the title, the subheading in particular. You already know it's coming somewhere in the book and that gives away a lot of what you will expect while reading. I guess you could say it was a spoiler in the subheading. I think it's purpose is to draw more initial interest in the book, which it does, but also gives away too much. If I had not known where the author was going from the title I would have been completely surprised in the story. Kind of like how if you read the back of the dvd of Slingblade (another awesome movie) the back tells a huge part of the movie that you would enjoy a lot more if you did not know it was coming. This book is obviously researched really well and it is obvious the author has spent some serious thought into why things were done and characters look at issues from both sides in realistic ways. Like most readers, I have several books to read at the moment but I actually took my time with this one and savored it. I almost did not want to finish it because it was so interesting. You have to make sure to keep going after you finish the story because there are descriptions of several interesting books produced by the publishing company. The company produces historical fiction as well as historical nonfiction from World War Two. I was fortunate enough to recieve a free copy to be able to review this and I hope the author produces more books like this in the future. I have no affiliation with the author and if I didn't like the book I would explain my dislike.

A Quiet Genocide from new author Glenn Bryant is a quiet book. Right up until it punches you in the gut. It’s historical fiction with a topic I’ve never seen broached. And I’ve read WW2 stories for decades now.It opens in post-WW2 Munich with the Diederichs. They’re a small family—just young parents and their grade school aged son. Catharina is a housewife, and Gerhard is a businessman. Young Jozef is a typical boy. But Gerhard drinks too much, Catharina is dissatisfied with life, and Jozef is mischievous. And Gerhard has a friend, Michael, who’s uncomfortably menacing. The book then jumps forward to Josef’s first year at university, when things start to unravel. Catharina is more restless. Gerhard is less discreet. And Jozef begins to question his own reality.Since the book’s subtitle is The Untold Holocaust of Disabled Children in WW2 Germany, I anticipated grisly details. When Bryant delivers, it’s more of an intense emotional hit than a gruesome one. But it still hurts. Especially given the kinds of things happening in the 2018 United States. My conclusionsBryant writes like an author with many more books to his credit. A Quiet Genocide is absorbing. Its truth-telling is subtle, and unfurls like a big black umbrella on a rainy day. The book has a darkness to it from the start. Then that umbrella opens and the true storm begins.Bryant learned of this specific genocide while studying modern history at university. Stunned that it’s not taught more often, he determined to make people more aware. Using fiction as a tool makes the story more palpable. There were tens of thousands of families like the Diederichs. Their story deserves to be told.I’m also intrigued to know about Amsterdam Publishers, a small house that specializes in Holocaust Memoirs and WW2 historical fiction. Their catalog looks like something to work my way through.I hope you’ll give this book a try. The Kindle version will be available on August 22, just next week. It’s well worth your time!AcknowledgementsThanks to Glenn Bryant and Amsterdam Publishers for a digital advanced readers copy of A Quiet Genocide. As always, this review is entirely my own honest impressions and writing.

I read a lot of WWII fiction and this book joined my shelf of favorites. It takes place in the 1950s in Germany and is about the after effect of the war as well as flashbacks to the war years. There are still people in Germany who are part of the National Socialist party and former Nazis who are unhappy with the changes in their country since the end of the war.The main character is Jozef. He grows up in a fairly happy household with two parents. A friend of his father's, Michael, visits once a week to talk politics and drink with his dad. The day before Jozef goes away to university, his parents tell him that he is adopted which makes him question his entire life. While at the university he is thirsty for knowledge and learns more about WWII and eventually about the way that the Nazis euthanized people who were handicapped - both mentally and physically. He also tries to find out about his birth parents which further unsettles his life. This novel had a great story but was also written to teach the reader about Germany - before, during and after WWII. Even though I read a lot of fiction from this era, I learned several items that I'd never known before which to me is the sign of a great work of historical fiction. An interesting fact - this book was published by Amsterdam Publishing that was founded in 2012. I read this on their website and plan to look into some of their other books.AMSTERDAM PUBLISHERS IS SPECIALIZED IN HOLOCAUST MEMOIRS & WW2 HISTORICAL FICTION.HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR STORIES NEED TO BE KEPT ALIVE.I read an advance copy of this book. all opinions are my own.

Great book. Lots of topics covered. One minor complaint: the Kindle version is hard to read the diagrams. I have to flip back and forth to landscape and portrait mode to see diagrams details. Something to consider if you prefer kindle books like me.

I am a little more advanced than what the book covers but that's okay since there were some things that I didn't know about until I got the book

Clear, easy to understand eq recommended.

I bought this book just after reading "Getting started with Arduino" - hoping that this book would enhance my knowledge enough that I would not break everything I plug into the Arduino with its Atmel Microcontroller.Sofar it has been great. I have a degree in Computer Science, so some of the "This is a microprocessor, this is what makes it up" stuff was redundant for me, but this will not be the case for everyone. The "Electronics 101" section is really helping me a lot - I don't have to pester my EE friend with nearly as many questions!

Great book for getting started in embedded. Does a good job of explaining the cryptic world of microprocessors in a way that feels natural. Unlike some technical books that feel like they were written BY a microprocessor...

One of the best books I've read on the subject. It could do with an update, but I really enjoyed it, more so that other O'REILLY offerings. It walks you through the basics, touches on embedded programming, but goes into a few example system designs. The part I really that I really liked was the writing style the author used, very upbeat and non-critical.

This was a good, well written book, for the quick time I spent with it. It was very basic. So if you are more on the the beginner side of the spectrum, this might be 5 stars for you. If you are more advanced, it might be 1 star. I returned it because, for me, it was too basic.

Although it is used, it is in great condition and from basics to the final concept all is there. Many things are known to somebody with an engineering degree, but it's a very good refreshing for certain points you did not use for several years.

I've read an insane number of books on the current economic crisis (I was Michael Lewis' research assistant for The Big Short) and this is one of the few that I would put in the "must read" category.Very few of the recent published books on the US economic crisis have an adequate historical perspective. In Inflated, Chris gives us a very full history -- he starts at the founding of the Republic! The book is nonetheless extremely entertaining. I found myself captivated by it, and finished it fairly quickly.Chris is an endearing narrator who is obviously more detail-oriented than many of his fellow commentators -- he clearly brings a high level of understanding to this work. The book is very much of the Austrian School. I don't fully agree with some of Chris' views -- I think I'm generally more tolerant of inflation and inflation risk than he is.Chris is quite pessimistic about the long future of the American economy, but I think I'm more pessimistic. He believes that austerity measures are required in the US and that the US will be able to weather these austerity measures fairly well socially and politically. I believe that the US cannot deal with austerity measures socially or politically -- therefore, they will not occur. The consequences of a lack of austerity are anyone's guess. Chris believes that high rates of inflation are inevitable without austerity -- I think high inflation and declining living standards are likely but not inevitable.I find Chris overall views on debt and inflation quite similar to those of Peter Warburton, author of the truly incredible book, Debt and Delusion. The views of both of these authors are wholly different than the New Keynesian thinking of Ben Bernanke. I tend to slightly favor the Warburton/Whalen side of the debate.Brandon

As usual, this was first posted on another site, which explains reference to Amazon reviews in the last paragraph....I thought this was going to be another crisis book--I must have read 20 of them--but it turned out to be an exceedingly pleasing historical treatise on intersection of money, debt, politics, and monetary policy over the two centuries. (I decided to read it out of my deepest respect for Chris' analytical skills.) Although much of the material will not be new to connoisseurs of fine economic history, I thought it was tied together very nicely. I, for example, found the discussion of bimetallism and the underlying political currents fascinating. (I realized that I had failed to understand William Jenning Bryan's famous "cross of gold" speech.) Chris generally does an excellent job of describing the political cross currents underlying important political events. I also think this book dovetails nicely with Reinhart's and Rogoff's "This Time is Different" in that it delves into the slow, methodical undermining of our monetary system--a single case study of sorts. As I was nearing the end of the book, I began to see what I would call the "praying mantis model." We got handed the reserve currency and a globally profound position. We got to run the world. As debts accrued, our creditors kept assuring us that, as masters of the universe, we were good for it. ("You guys just keep spending.") We didn't understand the end game: It's a suicide mission. (The male praying mantis gets eaten after copulating.) Whalen finishes with a few words of encouragement, but I am not convinced he believes them. To use Mauldin's term, we are going to muddle our butts off.As usual, I went to Amazon to see what others had to say. Of course, there were strong reviews from Chris' friends (Rickards, Laggner, and probably a couple others). Looking at the weakest reviews, there were aspersions to his political ideology--don't read this if you love FDR--but I would say that Chris kept me on my heels with his ability to show layers of the onion. The typos were also omnipresent, which I personally care about but was not distracted by. Somebody demanded a fusillade of charts and data, but I enjoyed the reliance on prose often characteristic of the Austrians. Everybody who reviewed the book comments about Chris' intellectual firepower and analytical skills.

Whalen is, in my opinion, possibly the best banking analysts working in the US today, for the reasons mentioned in other reviews - his honesty, straight-forward presentation of fact and, oddly, his ability to present the frightening truth with a dose of friendly optimism that keeps average people from burying their heads in the sand. The strong side of this book is the historical perspective, that our predicament is not nearly as new as we may wish to believe. He properly makes the case that the fight for soft/hard money, the extreme political/economic power of the national banking oligarchy and short-sighted/corrupt/destructive politicians as the norm, not the exception are all part of the long and rich history of America. This seems to me to be extremely important to those attempting to make sense of what is happening in America and across the globe today. The writing is not the best. Its not 'entertaining', it could be better organized, have a stronger 'unified' line throughout the book, be less dependent on footnotes or glorify the author as an oracle. All valid criticism of a writer. But, Whalen's not really a writer, he's an analyst - maybe now a financial historian. It seems to me that he did what he set out to do, to present to a wide audience how we got here, and not simply a case of the last 5-10 years like every other pop-financial writer out there who worked in an Ibank, or hung out with those who did.I believe this is a very important book, with appropriately geeky zits. It is true to its author's approach to analysis. I am taking the lack of writer polish as a positive.

His book has short segments that each cover a different topic. It is a great source to use to show children all the different jobs and why they are all important (from careers like chopping down trees to making electricity!). Educational and fun!

I read this book to my 20 month old daughter when visiting a friend's house and that must have been the abridged version because, contrary to some of the lower votes and conspiracy theorists, this reprint (as of July 2015) has all of the stories listed, including the policeman, the homemaker, the pilot, etc. that may have been left out of previous reprints. So, order with the knowledge that you are getting the full experience! That said, I would have ordered it for her even if it had been abridged as the stories and images are just wonderful, if a bit dated in parts, and there is so much there for her to discover and enjoy. Cannot recommend the book highly enough!

They finally re-released the original unabridged version!!! This is the exact book I had as a kid over 30 years ago. By the time I started high school my parents had given away all of the children's books I loved, I suppose not thinking that I might want them for my own children some day. Anyhow, when my oldest child was first born I went looking for a bunch of the old books I was so fond of back in the day and this was one of the ones I bought on Amazon. However, the one I bought about 5 years ago turned out to be an abridged version with many of the stories missing. I was NOT happy about that, and if you look at so many of the reviews for that version you'll see I'm not alone. Apparently Amazon (or Golden Books) took notice of all the bad reviews and complaints regarding the abridged version and opted to do the right thing and release the book once again in its original form. Please keep in mind that this is the original edition that so many people like me remember from their own childhood and thus is not up to date by todays "PC" standards. I for one am happy about that because I don't feel that old works should be updated to meet current culture, they are history and should be left as such. Buy contemporary books if you want them to contain contemporary culture. If this book had actually been written in 2015, I could understand many of the complaints about it that you'll see on so many of the negative reviews, but it wasn't written in 2015, it was written in 1968, so if you don't want your kids to know what life was like back in 1968, then avoid this book--in which case there are thousands upon thousands of other classic works of literature that you'll also have to avoid as well, so be careful! Of course, you could just do the smart thing and educate your child when they ask why things are shown the way they are in this book and explain why things are different now.

YES! This 2015 edition IS unabridged! At last I own an affordable copy of the complete What Do People Do All Day? for my small children to grow up with! Thank you, thank you publishers! I will be buying more for gifts!

A great book for explaining "how things work" in a simple way for kids! A must have for the inquisitive kid and covers a range of jobs from trees and where we get paper, how we get bread, doctors/nurses/babies, and more. A good primer for money and how worker make it, buy things with it and how other merchants use money from sales to continue to create an economy.

Long a favorite in my family, Richard Scarry's "What Do People Do All Day?" is great for kids and the adults that read it with them. This is a truly exceptional children's classic that's genuinely educational and is beautifully illustrated. The short vignettes that teach kids about various occupations are thoughtful and contain an astonishing amount of detail, and the characters in Scarry's books are always wonderful (my personal are Huckle, the kitten; Mortimer, the mouse; Captain Reddy, the pilot; Doctor Lion; and of course everyone's favorite annelid, Lowly Worm). This is a classic for a much deserved reason: it's simply one of the best and endearing children's books ever written!

A favorite young children's book that they still enjoy when they are older. It's been a long time since I read this book to my son and daughter. My daughter is 9 now and still looks at the pictures and reads it herself. Lots of other books were labeled "baby books " to give away but this one stays on her shelf. Richard Scarry's stories and characters are classics of childhood. His genus was taking complicated issues, like the inner workings of a house, and illustrating it so a five year old could understand a furnace, fuel tank, hot water heater, and cold air return. In addition to building a house there are pages on Tom Sawyer's Sawmill, Foolscap's Paper Company, a train trip, ship voyage and bread making in Able Baker Charlie's oven. When my son was younger his favorite story and pictures explained building a new road.

Another extremely well written and very helpful resource from Rose Publishing. The Creation and Evolution pamphlet uses the following categories to lead the reader through a discussion of the contrasts between classic Darwinism, modern evolutionary science and the Biblical position of creation science: Astronomy - What's the big bang theory? What do we actually see in space? What does a young earth creationist believe? Geology - What do we see in the crust? Should we use fossils to date strata or strata to date fossils? Does the Hebrew word yom, in the Genesis account, always mean a literal 24hr day? Paleontology - What does the fossil record actually show us? Do we see any transitional forms? How did Darwin actually feel about the content of the fossil records? Genetics - Do we see strong evidence of change from one species to another? What is the difference between micro and macro evolution? What about gene mutations? What direction (progress or regress?) do typical mutations travel? Biochemistry - What contribution does the discovery of DNA make to evolutionary science? Do we see species change at the molecular level? How do we explain such complex organs like the human eyeball where every part is essential? What is Behe's mousetrap? Mathematics - Given enough time, will chemicals change into life forms? Is 100billion years long enough for a single simple cell to form on earth? What is the mathematical probability of assembling amino acids (the building blocks of proteins) into a functional protein, randomly? "An honest man, armed with all the knowledge available to us now, could only state that in some sense, the origin of life appears at the moment to be almost a miracle, so many are the conditions which would have been satisfied to get it going." -Francis Crick "Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear." -Hebrews 11:3 "You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for you have created all things, and for your pleasure they are and were created." -Revelation 4:11This is a great little pamphlet full of solid and accessible information to help you navigate through the creation / evolution discussion and debate._________I was provided a free copy of this pamphlet from Rose Publishing for a free, unbiased, honest review.
