His book has short segments that each cover a different topic. It is a great source to use to show children all the different jobs and why they are all important (from careers like chopping down trees to making electricity!). Educational and fun!

I read this book to my 20 month old daughter when visiting a friend's house and that must have been the abridged version because, contrary to some of the lower votes and conspiracy theorists, this reprint (as of July 2015) has all of the stories listed, including the policeman, the homemaker, the pilot, etc. that may have been left out of previous reprints. So, order with the knowledge that you are getting the full experience!That said, I would have ordered it for her even if it had been abridged as the stories and images are just wonderful, if a bit dated in parts, and there is so much there for her to discover and enjoy. Cannot recommend the book highly enough!

They finally re-released the original unabridged version!!! This is the exact book I had as a kid over 30 years ago. By the time I started high school my parents had given away all of the children's books I loved, I suppose not thinking that I might want them for my own children some day. Anyhow, when my oldest child was first born I went looking for a bunch of the old books I was so fond of back in the day and this was one of the ones I bought on Amazon. However, the one I bought about 5 years ago turned out to be an abridged version with many of the stories missing. I was NOT happy about that, and if you look at so many of the reviews for that version you'll see I'm not alone. Apparently Amazon (or Golden Books) took notice of all the bad reviews and complaints regarding the abridged version and opted to do the right thing and release the book once again in its original form. Please keep in mind that this is the original edition that so many people like me remember from their own childhood and thus is not up to date by todays "PC" standards. I for one am happy about that because I don't feel that old works should be updated to meet current culture, they are history and should be left as such. Buy contemporary books if you want them to contain contemporary culture. If this book had actually been written in 2015, I could understand many of the complaints about it that you'll see on so many of the negative reviews, but it wasn't written in 2015, it was written in 1968, so if you don't want your kids to know what life was like back in 1968, then avoid this book--in which case there are thousands upon thousands of other classic works of literature that you'll also have to avoid as well, so be careful! Of course, you could just do the smart thing and educate your child when they ask why things are shown the way they are in this book and explain why things are different now.

YES! This 2015 edition IS unabridged! At last I own an affordable copy of the complete What Do People Do All Day? for my small children to grow up with! Thank you, thank you publishers! I will be buying more for gifts!

A must have for the inquisitive kid and covers a range of jobs from trees and where we get paper, how we get bread, doctors/nurses/babies, and more. A good primer for money and how worker make it, buy things with it and how other merchants use money from sales to continue to create an economy.

A favorite young children's book that they still enjoy when they are older. It's been a long time since I read this book to my son and daughter. My daughter is 9 now and still looks at the pictures and reads it herself. Lots of other books were labeled "baby books " to give away but this one stays on her shelf. Richard Scarry's stories and characters are classics of childhood. His genus was taking complicated issues, like the inner workings of a house, and illustrating it so a five year old could understand a furnace, fuel tank, hot water heater, and cold air return. In addition to building a house there are pages on Tom Sawyer's Sawmill, Foolscap's Paper Company, a train trip, ship voyage and bread making in Able Baker Charlie's oven. When my son was younger his favorite story and pictures explained building a new road.

It all started in 1949 when Memphis's own WDIA became the first radio station in the country to switch to all-black programming. After WDIA went off the air, WHBQ decided to capture some of their newly discovered black audience by putting "Daddy-O-Dewey" Phillips--the most popular white deejay in the mid-South--on a new show, Red, Hot and Blue. Although the show originally aired for just fifteen minutes a night, its impact was immeasurable.While Elvis and Sun Records were still virtually unknown--and two full years before Alan Freed famously "discovered" rock and roll--Dewey Phillips was playing Howlin' Wolf, B. B. King, and Muddy Waters. Phillips is part of rock 'n' roll history for being the first major disc jockey to play Elvis Presley (and subsequently to conduct the first live, on-air interview with Elvis). Louis Cantor argues, however, for an expanded understanding of Phillips's role in turning a huge white audience on to previously forbidden race music.  Phillips zeal for rhythm and blues legitimized the sound and set the stage for both Elvis's subsequent success and the rock 'n' roll revolution of the 1950s.Using personal interviews, documentary sources, and the oral history collections at the Center for Southern Folklore and the University of Memphis, Cantor presents a very personal view of the disc jockey while arguing for his place as an essential part of rock 'n' roll history. I have to admit that I approached this book with some hesitation. I was not sure I wanted to spend the money and time finding out about a "Rock 'n' Roll Deejay." (The title did not reassure me.) Yet I was curious about Phillips, a much-mentioned but distant figure in the Sun Records and Presley story. Turns out, it is a very good book about both, but even more so about Dewey Phillips himself and the role of DJs in promoting the music. The author shows Phillips as the comic and tragic character that he was, with sympathy but without the uncritical or "gotcha" attitudes that mar much writing about this music. I learned a lot about the origins of R and R and the music industry in the South in the 1940s and 1950s, as well as how the Presley phenom came into being. Phillips' relationship with Elvis both made him and destroyed him. He ended up an alcoholic and drug addict in lonely isolation. Sun Records owner Sam Phillips (no relation) and Presley more or less had to support his estranged family as he descended into his personal hell. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in those subjects. A good and informative read, and a very interesting story.

If you are an Elvis fan and you like to read about his life then I suggest this book...well written and worth the money...

A great look at a short often ignored period between the recording of That's Alright Mama and the signing with RCA. A vital cog in the birth of a whole new way.

fascinating reading - loved reading about Dewey....most of the book is about him - not a lot of interplay in the book with Elvis, but there is enough to make any Elvis fan happy.

Robert Bringhurst is a poet, typographer, linguist, critic, designer, translator, teacher, and cultural historian. He has published more than thirty books, eighteen of them books of poetry. His book, The Black Canoe, a study of Bill Reid’s sculpture, is a classic of Native American art history and his book The Elements of Typographic Style is considered the “bible” for typographers the world over. In Canada, Bringhurst is best known for his groundbreaking study of Native Canadian oral literature, A Story As Sharp as a Knife: The Classical Haida Mythtellers and Their World (1999), a work that startled many readers and sparked intense academic and public debate. Two volumes of translation from classical Haida complete the trilogy: Nine Visits to the Mythworld and Being In Being. In 2004, the trilogy earned Bringhurst the Edward Sapir Prize, awarded by the Society for Linguistic Anthropology. Among his more recent books of poetry is Ursa Major (2003), a multilingual work in which characters tell simultaneous stories in English, Latin, Greek, and Cree.Born in Los Angeles in 1946, Robert Bringhurst was brought to Canada at the age of five, raised largely in Alberta, and has lived and worked in British Columbia since 1973. 10/12 Minion on laid paper that is more transparent than it should be was not a great choice. This is the first book in a long while to make me go hunting for reading glasses. The transparency of the paper, the watermark lines, and the general layout combine to create strange variations in contrast that make reading difficult.Bringhurst says (on page 195) that "The type cannot be chosen without coming to some decision about the kind of paper it will be printed on, and cannot look right in the end if that decision is later betrayed." His example is about proportions, but transparency and style ask similar questions. Perhaps he was betrayed in this printing?The book is mostly great, despite a strange lack of history around spaces and punctuation, and occasional hectoring, but an unreadable typography book is a sad thing. (I have version 4.2 (2016).)

Probably the best book on typography and layout ever written. Although highly technical in places, this book's rich content offers material that will be valued by professionals and laypeople alike. The discussion of fonts and spacing is extensive, but the book also offers in-depth analyses of the formatting issues central to the creation of nearly every book.Provided, of course, that readers take time to absorb what Bringhurst offers and skip those parts that don't work for them (which should generally be the case for any book but is especially pertinent for this title). For instance, Bringhurst goes into exhausting detail about perfect proportion, thirds, sixths, and ninths, as well as harmonics, all of which may be Greek (or choose other suitable language) to many readers, while also offering diagrams and illustrations showing the "smoothness" or "disorder" of various layouts. The latter elements should connect with readers emotionally even if the geometric discussion comes up short.Bringhurst's approach is highly technical but also esoteric—he may comment on the tiniest details of a descender for a specific font based on mathematical proportion, then launch into a completely subjective analysis of said descender's emotional impact on readers. Because of this style, many readers may find portions of the text dull or overly abstract; the good news is that, also owing to this nonlinear style, you can just skip forward until you find something interesting, without any loss of continuity. For instance, The font section, with images and detailed descriptions of dozens of oft-used (and some not-so-oft-used) fonts, is a tremendous reference when one is searching for a font for a specific purpose such as page-count reduction or extensive glyphs.Bringhurst is a genius, and in spots he conveys information about layout and formatting that at first appears paradoxical or at odds with conventional thinking. In other places, as noted by another reviewer, he appears to suffer from the typical inability of geniuses to convey content to a broader audience. Despite that flaw, I considered much of that content to be a bonus because of its mere presence in the book, and for that reason I gave it five stars. Nothing else out there comes even close. And yes, the book itself is laid out perfectly.All in all, what this book lacks in readability it makes up for with the extensiveness of its content, providing information that can be used both by professionals and by those with no preexisting knowledge of typography.

Some years ago, when PageMaker was the gold standard of computer page layout, I knew something about typography. Or I thought I did. When, in preparation for putting my own writings out in book form, I revisited typefaces and all related matters, I realized I had known little and now knew less. But after reading this book, I am, if not fully informed, much better informed, and ready to give the world my golden thoughts in the form of paper and ink!This book concisely, but completely, covers all relevant topics. The writing is superb. The illustrations are cogent, helpful, and extremely well done. No attempt is made to claim that aesthetic choices are relative. Specific guidelines and rules are provided, along with crisp statements of their rationales. Examples of all key typefaces are provided, precisely and helpfully organized. International symbols and characters are covered. I cannot think of any relevant topic that is not completely covered.You don’t need to read this book cover-to-cover, though I did. You can easily get from it some narrow bit of information critical to your needs. Or you can use it to generally educate yourself. Or, like me, you can get a grasp of options and choices you need to make if you want to present your writings the best way possible. Unless you are a total philistine, you can’t go wrong buying this book.

This is a book that really helped pique my interest in typography back when the first edition was published. I was actually looking to buy Bringhurst's forthcoming book about Palatino, but did not find it on the Amazon site. This was a first for me. Not finding anything on Amazon. I was able to order the Bringhurst book directly from the Book Club of California. I liked Elements enough that when I noticed the forthcoming title, I looked to buy it. Robert Bringhurst is also a published poet, by the way. I find that writers with strong backgrounds in poetry tend to write well and seem to love words and type as much as I do. I bought this 20th anniversary edition to back up my wearing out early edition.

I first heard about this book when the author James Nestor was a guest on the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast however I had already been intrigued by the sport of Freediving since I read an article in ESPN the magazine back in the late 90's. I remember reading about it and being so fascinated by the ability of these seemingly normal human beings diving down to unfathomable depths on a single breath of air. My best friend and I were out in my pool literally 30 minutes after reading the article seeing who could hold their breath the longest and the following day we went to the lake in our community to attempt to reach the bottom near the dock. It was very surprising to me to hear on that podcast episode that most people still had never heard of Freediving. Hopefully this book will bring the sport into the light because it is truly amazing. The book starts out with the author who works for Outdoor Magazine being sent half way around the world for a competition that he had never heard of before. After witnessing the event he began a quest to understand how this was possible. Along the way he discovered many intriguing things about human physiology, the ocean and the organisms that live in it. His adventure brought him from Freediving competitions to taking a Freediving course to diving with a research team studying sperm whales...he even took a ride in a homemade submarine! I love the way the book is presented, the chapters are arranged brilliantly and it was very hard to put down. The author puts a spotlight on cultures that have used this ability to activate the Mammalian Dive Reflex for centuries. I extremely enjoyed reading this book as it has expanded my knowledge of ocean biology and the possibilities of human physiology.

This book is incredible. DO NOT let the review by Mr. Stanley tip the balance to not reading this book. You will have missed a fantastic read. Having read the book and spent some quality time on the author's errata blog, it seems like there may be something personal between these two -- a drama that has literally nothing to do with the quality of the book, its compelling writing style and the sweeping scope of issues covered. Freediving, Sperm Whales, deep sea vents -- it is all incredibly interesting, and all far too arcane to cover well for a lay audience but Nestor manages to do just that. If you are at all interested in science this book is literally a page turner. I couldn't wait to get back to see what was going to happen with the whales! BUY THIS BOOK. It may change your life. If my daughter follows through on studying marine biology, the trace of that action will start with the two of us reading this book together. (she is 11). I can think of no greater endorsement, for I believe that motivating further study of the sea is the ultimate purpose for writing this book.

Absolutely fascinating book. Remember, though, do not attempt to do these experiments at home. Especially the man-eating shark ones. Everything in the book, including the echo-location experiments, have the potential to go unpleasantly wrong and were described as being done under some sort of supervision, often expert. Having said that, everything in the book is achievable and experts are out there. Occasionally way out there, but out there nonetheless. That fact, the fact that abilities normally relegated to the superhero comics are entirely achievable, would be worthy of a book in its own right.Now apply those abilities to experimental, predictive science. (If it's not experimental AND predictive, it's not really science at all.) The range of possibilities is fantastic. Yes, I know, it's controversial, but either those using the techniques are doing good science (ie: predictive and experimental) or they are not. Either they are applying the Scientific Method or they are not. The techniques determine the impact of the observer and limit the valid experiments possible, but everything that is valid IS valid, end of story. Argue the experiments on grounds of merit all you like, but no other complaint has any standing worthy of the name.

As a kid, I studied oceanography at a college level while I was still in elementary school. I subscribed to all the journals and went on many field trips with college classes in the summer. I lived on an island in Florida, and marine biology was two steps out my door. Now 45 years later, I'm returning to my love of the ocean sciences. This book made me want to do so many of the things I did in the '60s, dive deep, study dolphins, and marvel at what we don't know about life in the oceans. One statement from the book concerning samples pulled from below 20,000', "50% to 90% of what is taken from the samples below 20,000' has never been seen before. They are entirely new species". If that isn't cool, I don't know what is.

I had my doubts with this book. I bought it as a goofy Christmas gift for my husband who is a huge Bigfoot fan. While it is a rather quick read (think of it as a slightly longer, much more mature children's book) he was thoroughly entertained and found it to be quite funny. My dad read it and got a good laugh out of it as well. If you want something stupid and random this is it.

Quirky, gross-silly, funny book, delivered nicely in the right amount of time.

Seamless, inspired, hilarious work. The personal account of the monosyllabic mystery of the woods. As funny as the text is, the illustrations resonate and add to it. An idea so simple YOU could off thought of it, but you never could have pulled it off with this much charm and vision, so bite the bullet and buy the book. Makes a great present, I got it for my birthday, I laughed so hard, I bought it for my good friend.

This book had some funny parts but all in all not what I was hoping for.
